I just rewatched Ice Age: Collision Course last night, and I couldn’t even make it halfway. It’s a really, really bad animated film.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

I could never make it through Beast Of Yucca Flats without Mike and the bots, and Manos uncut is a walk in the park for me. Anybody who thinks Ed Wood is the worst filmmaker of all has never met Coleman Francis.

I gave The Exorcist (theatrical cut) another chance last night after about 10-15 years.

I still think it’s overrated and not scary.

I tend to agree to an extent, though my opinion of the film has increased tremendously over the years. I think Exorcist III is the superior entry in the series, weak ending notwithstanding, and grossly underrated.

I only saw The Exorcist for the first time earlier this year, but I can say that to my memory, it’s the only movie that has legitimately disturbed me. Being religious probably has some affect on how I reacted to it, but I don’t see how anyone can say it isn’t an effective film.

I totally agree. As far as “scary”… I dunno. I’m a 38 year old man. Monsters aren’t real and the movie’s not gonna jump out n’ grab me. But seeing the horror happen to innocent people and through the eyes of a helpless, unbelieving mother… I just don’t see how anybody can say it’s not an effective movie. A horrifying story well told and well executed.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a well made film. It isn’t bad by any means. But I certainly don’t think it’s the best horror movie ever made by a long shot.

It’s much more effective as a character study of a religious man having a crisis of faith and being forced to literally confront it head-on.

I think The Exorcist could’ve benefited from some subtlety. We could’ve done without Regan’s head doing a 360, for instance.

But have you seen it 167 times?

Perhaps this is why I like it so much. Horror movies have never really been something that have ‘scared’ me, so I always have a hard time judging that aspect of them. But The Exorcist is one of the best horror films beyond the scares, which makes it one of my favorites. Probably why I usually gravitate to something like Jaws as my all time favorite horror movie.

I don’t really appreciate jump scares in horror movies that much. It’s hard to articulate what makes a horror film “scary” to me, and it’s probably different with each one.

For example, I love John Carpenter’s The Thing because the atmosphere of claustrophobia, isolation, and paranoia is so pervasive that it becomes legitimately terrifying, and the few jump scares in the movie actually feel earned. That is probably my gold standard for horror, but I also like some slasher movies for very different reasons - usually suspense and thrills, even if they’re not really scary.

I guess the story and character development of The Exorcist were excellent for me, but the atmosphere didn’t creep into me the way it does in the similarly-constructed horror movies I’ve enjoyed, and it seems like that was the primary “horror” part of it.

Almost sounds like something written today, doesn’t it? The I presume very late Mr. Maloney must have been an expert on how witches are supposed to speak. He seems to have worked at the magazine well into the 1950’s, so I wonder if he ever changed his tune?

Andrei Rublev. It’s truly an incredible film. Words can’t give it the due it deserves.

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

The 1966 version? (I am not sure if they have remade this - like so many others?)

It is a film I have been meaning to view for a long time, yet have never quite got around to it. I think I really must rectify this as many people say good things about Tarkovsky’s film.

Andrei Rublev’s an excellently crafted movie, but it didn’t give me the static shock so many others seem to get from it. I dunno why. It’s very long, but so was Stalker, and I love that film. I also like Christian films with actual intelligence behind them. Yet I could only give it 8/10.

Yes indeed. There were two cuts. But I watched the preferred cut of Andrei.

I don’t think you’d be disappointed by doing so. Andrei Tarkovsky is a truly incredible filmmaker and artist. I feel a very deep spiritual connection with him. Ever since I saw Stalker earlier this year my life has changed in ways I never thought were possible. Stalker has left me scarred and haunted for reasons I don’t understand and don’t want to know. Andrei Rublev only adds to that feeling but in a different way. For me it has a way that makee the viewer feel hopeful and potency despite the tragedies. I don’t want to spoil anything but highly recommend it.

I can certainly understand that but also don’t give up on only one viewing if that’s all you’ve seen of it. If I’ve learned anything in watching his films is that the more you watch them, the deeper meanings you’ll find and new ideas and layers emerge. The biggest example I’ve found of this is Zerkalo. It’s personally his best work to me. Stalker was my first and I love it too. It’s truly an incredible film. I especially love Stalker’s Prayer about when we are born that we are soft but as we grow old we become hard. Truly one of my all time cinematic moments. I think while Andrei Rublev is certainly a Christian film in a lot of ways, I’d say try looking at it as an artist trying to keep their integrity during a difficult time. I think greater meaning will open up. The only film from his that I’ve struggled with so far is Solaris. I still need to watch it, Ivan’s Childhood, Nostalghia, and The Sacrifice. I owe a lot to Andrei and feel his presence often.

How Green Was My Valley

Just watched this for the first time, and it’s already become one of my favorite films ever.
