STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED ** — Page 104

Never say never, but that’s pretty good! What’s the source of the word ‘mother,’ for that, anyway? Has anyone parsed JEJ’s reading of the KJV for the dozens of occurrences of the word?

I still think this one actually SOUNDS the best.

All the further enhancements are increasingly highlighting the time-stretch and reverb processing, and instead of making the performance feel organic and connected, it’s making it stand out more. I don’t know that you even need to slow down ‘Your mother’ so much as you probably need to slightly pitch shift it down a few cents and maybe eq more carefully. As it is, it sounds a little extra-crispy with the time stretch and reverb effects being added to it.

of the variations posted, I honestly believe it’s this first one that sounds the most like James Earl Jones is saying the line as written in the ADR sessions. The others, in an effort to make it “time out” correctly, are calling attention to the fact it’s two takes stitched together. If time stretching has to be employed, I’d suggest only stretching the “err” syllable of your mother.

I’d say it’s better from a flow perspective, but I do think Broom Kid has a point about my tweaks to version seven. I added no reverb and slowed the whole line down, not just the first part. I thought that applying the effects universally made it less obvious, while also giving it some natural pauses. Redoing Vader’s breathing sound effects could help patch it up a little, as well as a little EQ to reduce any “artificiality.” Thankfully, Ady is a talented enough audio editor to improve the work that Sir Ridley (and myself, a little bit) have done here.

It’s fantastic that such a change is both doable and can work very well with available clips and footage.

Ok, I haven’t said anything, 'cause I didn’t wanna be a buzz kill. None of the other versions sounded natural to me. The different sources were clear to hear and the phrasing just didn’t work…
But this version is getting close to something I could fully support! Very cool!
Still needs another beat between “Mother” and “once”.

This is quite nice, Sir Ridley. However, I don’t think this single line spells it out to the audience. I hope Adywan will consider this for his edit:

Fantastic! Of course, like many ideas, LEGO Star Wars beat us the punch.

I kind of like the extra-deep rendition as well. If anything, we’ve given Adywan a fantastic demonstration that such a change is doable. I’m curious, what were your sources?

Perhaps this is good enough, I don’t want to take over the thread with mother-edits when we don’t even know if Adywan is interested.

I think that’s great, though the “mother” portion seems to have less body than the rest of the sentence.

If Adywan does happen to chime in to express disinterest in this for his edit, feel free to move it to my ‘Custom SE’ thread. 😃

I extracted some useful sounds from a section of his Bible reading (I don’t remember which part). I took a “your” and then I constructed the “mother” by combining an instance of “mother” with the word “another”.

Hey Adywan, do you plan on changing Ackbar to look more consistent with The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi?

I don’t see any need to do that, especially with the films being set 30 years apart. Ackbar is almost exactly the same with a few more wrinkles/ folds.

Would be good to see a couple Rebel Pilots discover why it is so important that Han gets that shield down.

That’s already planned

I tried turning a still of the Death Star into “3D” using a displacement map to make it look like it was turning slowly and it seems like it could be pretty convincing.

LOVE IT!!! Can this effect be used on other things, like ships etc? I’ll send you a PM soon 😉

The big problem when stitching together dialogue is , if the intonation isn’t quite right, it can throw things off. To me, this sounds unnatural. Great work though. I have a great Vader impersonator that has offered to record some dialogue for me so, if i decide to change the line, it will be re-recorded .

Good to hear! It can be used on anything, but more details and depth is more difficult.

I also found a new After Effects plugin which should be able to handle more advanced cases. I’ll look into it.

That sounds fantastic to me! Does this person have some Vader impressions publicly available (e.g., on a Youtube page)?

JEJ’s KJV? I happen to have MP3s of the New Testament if it’s needed? I bought it at a bookstore a few months ago while I was out with a pastor friend.

Watching this “your mother” scene several times lately and noticed something that hadn’t dawned on me before:

Vader: conduct your search and bring his companions to me

Then no search is ever shown. It doesn’t affect the plot. Just a throw away line that doesn’t matter. Shame.

Also this hadn’t dawned on me before until recently. THIS is the scene of Luke confronting Vader that Yoda said needed to happen. As a kid I assumed Yoda meant another lightsaber battle needed to take place. Luke did too I guess. But without this conversation, the throne room scene could’ve been quite different. …right?

Oh wow, that’s a great observation! Never considered that before.

According to this video, during the production of ROTJ certain scenes that had been scored by John Williams had either been replaced by a different score or was completely removed from the scene.

Should this scene of Luke speaking to Obi-wan on Dagobah have a score in it or left as is?

Hairy_hen has a version of his 5.1 audio track that includes this music. In fact, it was mistakenly included as the only 5.1 track on the initial 4K83 releases (don’t know if it’s still the muxed-in track on recent iterations, but the “purist mix” was readily made available by him as well).

The use of tracked-in music in ROTJ is definitely noticeable in places — the use of “Here They Come!” from ANH during the space battle, most prominently. Are there any other points in the movie where we have a version with the original music? (Is that what ChainsawAsh is referring to, or just this one scene? I haven’t seen that release.) For the Obi-Wan scene, though, I don’t think the score adds anything. It may just be because it’s the way I’m used to hearing it, but I think it’s more effective without music.

Throwing another idea out there for the “your mother” scene, that ties in with “from a certain point of view” as well as with Kylo Ren: in an episode of Rebels, James Earl Jones as Vader delivers the line “Anakin Skywalker was weak. I destroyed him.” I’m not sure if the audio of the line could be found isolated from the SFX in the scene — and indeed, if Ady has an impersonator available, there’s no need to restrict himself. I’d just found out that JEJ voiced Vader in Rebels and went looking to see if there was anything that might be suitable, following the “your mother” discussion earlier.

Adywan didn’t restore any of the missing ESB cues, so I doubt he’ll restore any here. I do think that there are some cues that could work in the film. “Bounty for a Wookie” instead of the Max Rebo outro music would be nice, as would using the Obi-Wan/Luke music.
