There was at least one more unused alternate angle that was shot for the Leia hologram, and interestingly enough it found it’s way into this scene from The Last Jedi.

I remember seeing a still from the raw footage of this angle (Leia with a black background behind her), although I don’t know if the actual video is anywhere on the internet. I might do some digging and see if I can find it.

I once dreamed that I came across a special restored cut of A New Hope that included never before deleted scenes that completely changed the movie.
-Lando shows up. Turns out he’s an old friend of Luke this whole time. They went to the Jundland wastes to rescue R2 and there’s a big shoot out with the Tusken Raiders.
-The shootout attracts the attention of the Imperial fleet, who arrive with black Gunndam-like mechs to disrupt what they imagine to be rebel terrorism.
-Darth Vader shows up too. Not only because he feels the stolen plans are there and wants to find the droid personally, but because ”These mechs have 26 different transformation stages, and I want to be the first one to see them all!”
-By the time he steps into one of them, a passing Imperial rover drives over one the arms/wings, rendering it useless.
-In his anger he force-throws a bunch of Stormtrooper pilots out of their cockpits.
-Finally the rebels actually show up hoping to fight, but Darth Vader is actually doing the most damage, so they just sit and watch. Luke and Lando are already gone by this point.
-Later on, there were test shots of Carrie Fisher’s stunt double inside the set of a damaged Death Star. Although dressed as Leia and even had the hair, the double looked a lot like Leonardo DiCaprio
These weren’t CGI shots, nor were they filmed twenty years after the fact. All of these were filmed in 1976 and were merely cut for time and narrative pacing. Apparently Harmy used various sources to put all this together as part of his new side-project.
The runtime was about six hours long.
Weird bit of trivia I thought I’d share…
I don’t know how common knowledge it is that Steven Spielberg worked on ROTS, it seems like something that people never talk about. I had always been under the impression that he only did animatics for the Utapau chase scene, so it made sense that it was never made into that big a deal. However, I’ve been reading the Making of Episode III book and watching through the film’s special features, and along the way there have been passing references to Spielberg directing the animatics for not just the Utapau chase, but also Order 66, the Yoda/Palpatine fight, and the Mustafar duel. Nowhere in the book or the bonus features do they ever comprehensively state everything he’s doing, they just vaguely say he’s working on animatics. So it’s probably fair to assume he did animatics for even more sequences than just those four. Found that interesting, his work was apparently pretty decently substantial.

Wow. That is bizarre. I’m emailing some people at the Air & Space Museum to see if they have any idea.
JEDIT: One of the curators got back to me and basically “Yup that is weird” but he didn’t know anything more. Not sure if any of the others I emailed will reply, but he did suggest talking to, you know, people who built the prop. That’s a good idea, I just have no idea where to start. Or finding out if the prop still exists today.
People you know at the ASM, or can anyone make inquiries? I wouldn’t be surprised if someone on the film (McQuarrie?) drew inspiration from NASA hardware, it’s always been very easy for anyone to get design specs on American spacecraft, even our rivals in the space race.

Yeah, I just looked up curator’s emails on the museum’s website. I’ve been to a few talks there, so I did have some idea of which people to look for, and their staff bios list their specialties. One of the talks I went to was given by Owen Garriott, seen here at the very controls in question, so remembering which curators were involved with that talk was a good starting point.
So yes, it did help that 5 years ago I went to a lecture devoted to, more or less, talking about operating those controls.
