Well, the higher the resolution the better it compresses, specially for the same amount of global detail.
That’s because pixel level artifacts and macroblocks become smaller in comparison 😃

With sound it’s the same, we use 48kHz and 32bit compression to reduce artifacts.
But the actual source material might only needs 32kHz and 12 bit in terms of actual detail.

I understand the reasoning behind using 720p for ANH and I agree for uncompressed images.
But for compressed videos, you need a higher resolution to keep all the 720p detail. And most people are likely to see highly compressed versions 😉

Here’s an interesting example with images (Higher resolution or lower compression JPG’s?):

Resolution always wins 😃

Adywan, Projects 4K77 and 4K83 are definitely 4K. They have less detail than the 1080p BluRays, but they’re absolutely 4K.

Adywan clearly meant that the visible detail level is less that what is already in the 1080p blu-ray, which makes sense as one is from negatives and the other from old release prints.

Sure he did, but he said “even the team would admit these aren’t 4K” and… well, they most definitely are.

No they are not. Just because they are scanned and released in 4k doesn’t make them 4k. Theatrical prints hold between 720p and at max 1080p worth of visual information. The team behind the 4k releases captured the film at 4k to try and squeeze the last bit of detail they could out of the prints. They did a damn good job, but they can’t magically produce detail that is on the negatives that isn;t present on an old theatrical print. The only way they could be 4k is if they were directly scanned from the negatives in 4k or above.

It’s a bugbear of mine with all these 4k commercial releases that are just upscales. It may be in 4k resolution but if the source doesn’t have the resolution to begin with, it’s not 4K. It’s so misleading and causing people to claim that 4k is a waste of time because most of what they are seeing were never even mastered @4k. The BBC here have been releasing old Doctor Who episodes on Blu-Ray from old TV broadcasts. 1080p, yet the source was 480p. And they’re calling them HD. They’re even going to release ones in UHD. It’s madness

Hey Adywan, you know you mentioned putting in new 3D tie into the background. Well I was wondering how you were going to do them, weather you had models already or weather you are going to film real ones or still need to make ones. Anyway what ever you do end up doing I thought I’d let you know about this new (free/opensource) software Meshroom. Its a 3D scan compositor and well I’ve been playing around with a for a few days and found it rather easy to learn.

While I was testing it I had the idea of trying to use an old Tie Fighter model I had to see if it would work, which you can see here: https://imgur.com/a/uirCFfQ

If you want to use my scans or want to know anything about using meshroom or anything let me know. This technology is amazing and there are too many things to mention, I can think to use it for.

[EDIT]Oh, forgot to mention, all you need to use to get a scan is a camera and just take loads of overlapping picture from all around the object and it’ll calculate the positions in 3D space. So cool

Ady has CG models he used in ESBR that can be reused for ANHRHD.

I didn’t realize that adywan added any CG TIEs to ESBR, just thought after he lost all his original assets from ANHR he might not have gotten around to making a new one, but yeah if he has models ready to go that’s good. But also if he ever needs to make any for other vehicles or terrain or even buildings, hopefully he can check should Meshroom.

Here is a quick look at the opening shot of ANH:RHD. The one good thing about having to start everything from scratch is that i am able to utilise sources that were not available at the time, like HD scans of many of the original Matte Paintings. Plus i have learned a great deal since i completed ANH:R, so i am able to fix a few things that i wasn’t able to fix first time around. It would have been impossible to accurately recreate the original version anyway.

Fixed the misaligned flash effect on the Stardestroyer…

And fixed the background issue with the trooper…

Looks amazing, Adywan! I only have 2 complaints:

  1. I never liked the idea of adding a third moon to the opening shot. Messing with such an iconic shot for the sake of continuity with the worst Star Wars movie doesn’t feel right to me.

  2. The rotoscoping on the shot of the Rebel trooper looks pretty rough, although it will probably look better in the final version.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:
I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX

If your phrase is correct, how can this movie not have continuity with itself?

He said it was the worst SW movie so I switched it to the best.

He was referring originally to AOTC as the worst. It depicted 3 moons in the sky.

I know that. But LZ changed it to “best” in reference to AOTC, which is a ridiculous claim. So I decided to interpret it as the actual best, ANH, which now explains my joke about why we would be worried about continuity with ANH in an ANH fan edit.

I was confused I thought you were referencing ANH. AOTC is the worst though.
