Holiday Special at SD County Fair

So there’s this guy who is selling DVDs claiming that he met a guy from LA who had a copy of the original film reels for the Special and scanned them to sell a DVD.

He’s also boasting he’s the only one who has the film and that you won’t be able to find it on “fan sites” which made me instantly question his credibility because it’s on YouTube in its entirety. But I was wondering if anyone knew of any film reel.

Also if curious he was selling it for $25

The Holiday Special was shot on analog broadcast videotape, with the exception of the Boba Fett cartoon and the stock shots from the movie. Unless this guy is confusing video tape reels with film reels?

Honestly I just thought he was a hack trying to make a sale

The only possibility I think would be to have found a film back up or transfer copy to perhaps 16mm or something. They may have made ones for smaller or foreign markets in the case of reruns.

But I severely doubt even that.

There are no film reel copies of the Holiday Special to anyone’s knowledge - it only exists on video. But even if the guy somehow got hold of a master tape and transferred it to DVD…that’s already been done by EditDroid, and is available for free out there in probably the highest quality we may ever see. So there’s not likely any reason to give him any money regardless.

I don’t suppose he was able to show an example of the quality he supposedly has? Probably not.

Having seen tv shows that were shot on NTSC video transferred to film for airing in South America, I can vouch that they looked terrible.
There was a scammer who advertised an alleged HS film reel on Ebay about a decade ago. Someone here unfortunately won the auction. I never did find out if they got their money back.
