I can’t post a clip right now, but it goes:

Luke calls back to a knock on the door with “go AWAY.”

Chewie’s grenade blows the door against the far wall, and could have easily killed Luke.

Chewie steps in, roaring angrily.

Luke asks “Chewie, what are you doing here?”

Chewie growls and speaks in a medium tone.”

Luke asks “The Falcon?” A bear passes. “Where’s Han?”

The working title of TLJ was “Space Bear,” so including bears actually makes a lot of sense 😉

Sorry if some of the following suggestions are things that you’re already implementing, but there are a few other things that poppasketti does that I REALLY appreciate.

1. Very slightly trim Paige’s grabbing the detonator

  • It’s not a major thing but helps a bit with the believability of it all. It really does feel like an impossible feat.

2. Cut Luke drinking milk (just that shot, not the scene)

  • I’m all about Luke milking the breast of a bizarre alien and drinking her milk, but it just feels more elegant and kinda endearing when Luke’s bizarre milk-covered scowl is cut and we just see Rey’s reaction.

3. Cut Maz’s line about having a physical relationship with the codebreaker

  • I know you appreciate the sexual undertones of TLJ, but if you cut this completely then you wouldn’t have to worry about adjusting the timing of Rose and Finn’s reaction.

And I know I might sound like a broken record at this point, but I’ll mention it one more time - I’m a huge advocate for redubbing the “parking violation” alien on Canto Bight. Maybe it doesn’t bother other people the same way it bothers me, but his southern drawl really takes me out of things. Plus including some alien language with subtitles would give it some OT vibes.

Ha, that bear typo is funny.

I don’t think any of those things fit for me, Abram. Luke drinking the milk rubs into Rey’s face the sort of thing that she looks away from.
Maz’s sex line is the best part of what is unhelpably a silly scene, so I don’t want to remove it.

I’ll have to take a look at the detonator from poppasketti’s edit, though.

I would love something done about that. the OT established that if you are not human, you don’t sound human. Of course there are varying degrees, either in language or accent, but there is a clear distinction between human and non human. The PT mostly followed this as well, minus the Pod Race Announcer in TPM. This character felt VERY out of place as well as goofy. He would be more appropriate for the MCU than Star Wars.

I wouldn’t mind a dub or something that gives him an alien voice, or at least a more “alien” accent than a straight up Southerner. If you closed your eyes, you would picture a human saying his lines, not a non-human.

The same thing occurs with SOLO with Rio Durrant. He felt very out of place as well.

My thoughts exactly, jarbear!

And sounds good, Hal. Beyond psyched for the new version!

I’m pretty sure Battlefront 1 or 2 has sound bytes of random Abednedo language gibberish. Maybe someone could replace the human dialogue with that, and also add subtitles that can establish a different context for why they’re in trouble.

I think that might go beyond what Hal wants to do with his version, but it could be something for other editors to think about.

EDIT: Here it is https://youtu.be/9jb3F18dmdo

Some of the first lines are more like war cries, but the further you go into it the more normal-toned lines there are.

Interesting idea, especially with an ‘authentic’ resource like that to potentially plug in. I can’t say his voice really bothers me in the first place, and each trilogy needs one film without subtitles! (And a crawl with no CAPS.)

Okay, those last two points are in jest.

What all aliens speak English in the films?

  • Nemoidians - sound like Asian accents
  • Gungans - fake dialect or accent
  • Watto - what I sound like trying to do either an Italian or NY Jewish voice because, while I like to have fun, I’m not an actor
  • Mas Amedda - British, speaking from behind makeup
  • Malastare senator - sounds like a female voice from the news
  • Yoda - odd voice and syntax
  • Ki Adi Mundi - British
  • Zam - sounds like a human lady while in human form, then with an audio filter while in normal form
  • Dex - fat guy from a sitcom
  • San Hill - oldish sounding voice
  • Techno Union guy - filtered
  • Grievous - filtered Eastern European voice
  • Utupau guy - odd voice
  • Unklar Plutt - slightly filtered British voice

I might have missed a few but it seems there’s plenty of precedent for this sort of thing so I’m not sure why it’s a problem, beyond some of your subjective impressions, which is fair enough.

The southern drawl bothers me too. There’s only one instance in the OT where we hear a strong southern accent like that, and it’s just part of one line ‘Hold up here and wait for my signal…’ It feels like a bit of a mistake on the part of the actor, who has a much less southern American accent the rest of the time.

As someone who lives in the South, the accent feels very local and entirely the opposite of alien, but I’ll admit that means I don’t have the perspective of most of the world on this. I mean, there sholdn’t be any difference between a southern drawl and any other accent for someone in Star Wars, but the fact remains that it feels weird coming from aliens or even from other humans.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’m excited, all those new changes for V3 Sound amazing except for:

-Removing phasma: i liked that sequence , phasma and that fight is just eye candy similar to darth maul or boba fett, i like the score that plays during that fight, the length of the film is ok, the only thing that made me check my watch , watching the movie was the fathier in the original, without it the film is ok and one thing that i liked about this fan edit was how little it change , was basically the same movie but improved, taking that fight out would change that 😛 .

-Removing Jakku being nowhere: i liked that joke/interaction with luke and rey, the more luke jokes about rey the better the movie is xD besides that, it fits with the theme of Rey = nobody

But putting that aside i’m looking foward for the V3 😄

Well, I don’t plan to remove Phasma or the fight between her and Finn, so there’s nothing to worry about there.

The Luke Jakku quip is something I’ve hemmed and hawed over but I think it’s just not something that we would have seen in the OT, but that we have seen in the ST. So I’d prefer to keep Luke away from it since he doesn’t do it much. The reed gag later on seems more consequential and part of the point being made, so it feels different to me.

Whatever happens, I’ll get a solid workprint out before IX for anyone interested in having it for a countdown viewing.

I appreciate the Yoda scene all the more today after stumbling onto a video about the concept of “kill the Buddha,” which I won’t expound upon here.

I guess that scene, and the movie as a whole, is intended as a shock to our system, and one that I’ve come to love. I still feel that some of the window dressing and techniques aren’t all that great, but I appreciate the core messages. Iconoclasm, tearing down, rebuilding, letting go, finding balance. I’m glad to have more from Luke to learn from and alongside, even as my own religious and philosophical beliefs remain in a state of uncomfortable upheaval.

Ditto! I wanna make sure I have the most up-to-date version of the Hal Saga before I start rewatching in the fall.

I would recommend the following changes:

  • After Hux says, “We have them tied on the end of a string,” cut to Kylo entering the throne room and Snoke saying “Tied on a string indeed.”

  • Move the deleted scene of Luke mourning Han’s death to right after he says, “Where’s Han”

  • Cut the Tie Fighters shooting the bridge and Leia blasting into space and flying back

  • Cut Finn and Rose’s subplot and Poe and Holdo’s subplot

  • Reinstate the caretaker scenes and Luke’s third lesson

  • Replace Holdo with Admiral Ackbar in the hyperspace Kamikaze attack (borrowing shots from Ivan Ortega)

  • Re-edit Finn’s sacrifice so that an AT-AT shoots down Rose, Finn tries to sacrifice himself, then an AT-AT shoots him down.

Author

I would caution against cutting any of Luke’s humorous lines. That would only make him less likable than he already is in this movie.

That goes against all of Hal’s intentions for this edit. If you want those changes, you should make your own edit.

You… you can’t be serious man. Those shots look TERRIBLE.

Your cutlist is very close to Ivan’s edit btw, you should check it (it’s bad beyond belief but, hey, who am I to judge ?)

Author

Poppasketti’s edit has a couple of those ideas manifested, but I agree that perhaps Ivan’s re-edit might be a better fit outright.

Combining the scenes you suggest combining would be odd choices if you ask me, and I can’t see them feeling right.

As per what others have said, those suggestions would not be compatible with the direction of Hal’s edit, but sounds like a hybrid of Ivan and Poppaskietti’s edit.

The one I do like is the non-Leia Poppins scene being removed, but that’s not for this edit.

Your edit inserts the deleted scene “Luke mourns Han” right after Luke says “You don’t need Luke Skywalker,” and then asks, “Do you think I am going to walk out with a laser sword and face down the whole First Order?”

Watching the scenes in this order implies that Luke is grieving over his own fate – namely, that he cannot live up to the legend of Luke Skywalker – not grieving over Han’s fate. That in turn implies Leia is grieving not over Han’s fate but over Luke’s failure. The order of scenes affects their meaning.

The film would feel more natural if Luke mourned Han’s death immediately, instead of waiting until after he finishes an unrelated conversation with Rey, which implies the news was not immediately impactful.

Moving the deleted scene of Luke requires moving the scene of Kylo Ren and Snoke. The dialogue flows more smoothly if the two “tied on a string” remarks follow one another.

“They can’t get away, Supreme Leader. We have them tied on the end of a string.”
“Tied on a string indeed, General Hux. Well done. The Resistance will soon be in our grasp.”

Also, I dislike how your edit splits Rey’s line “I’m not leaving without you” from the scene where she follows Luke around.
