Ok, so here’s an 8K frame from AOTC without any regrading. This is a test of AI Gigapixel.
Hey emanswfan, any chance of rendering up a full 4k shot of something with your film grain/grade applied? These upscales look promising but I think many of us would love to see what they look like absent that nasty digital sheen. 😃

For sure, I’ve just wanted to try out upscaling with gigapixel and esrgan which seem to be the best two AI upscalers, although they do bring weird artifacts that non-AI upscalers don’t have. So I’ll still have to figure out the best method which may vary from shot to shot, or a combination of several. Previously, I’ve also used Waifu2xPhoto (AI upscaler), Detail-Preserving Upscale (Adobe, non-AI), and RedGiant Instant 4K (non-AI).
For AOTC, I will now be using Schormann’s HDTV preservation over the Blu-ray It has the theatrical/DVD colors (which saves a hell of a lot of work not having to deal with shitty bluray colors) and once denoised to get rid of compression artifacts, actually carry over more fine detail.

Of course, there is the strong possibility of a 4K release by Disney premiering this November on Disney+, and later in May 2020 on UHD Bluray. These may look better in detail by them going back to the original files and possibly re-rendering VFX. Hoping though, that AOTC has correct colors, TPM isn’t poorly DNR’d, and that ROTS just stays mostly the same.
Proper filmized screenshots should be coming soon again.
Until I build my new computer next year, I’m pretty much stuck to doing tests and samples on my Macbook Pro, but I can at least save grading work as presets for future work.
Here’s six new screenshots from AOTC using the new HDTV source, denoising, and AI upscaling, along with the methods I’ve previously used. I haven’t put much work into the new grade yet. But goodness, I’m happy to not be dealing with the horrid blu-ray colors anymore.

I’ll post a comparison too once screenshotcomparison is back up (I can’t seem to get framecompare to work either).

Looks awesome. What techniques/filters are you employing, besides renoising and AI Upscaling?
I turned down the denoising setting from full to half in gigapixel, and this is what I get. It seems full does smudge some fine detail, but no denoising keeps those hideous compression artifacts in, so this might be a better balance. Either way you can definately see the big difference that the software does to take highly compressed 1080p and transform it to uncompressed 4k.
Just saw Once Upon A Time in Hollywood in 35mm this past weekend, and it was a really nice reminder to see how a modern 35mm print should look.
It’s given me a better idea of the look of modern film, and I’m confident I can truly master something close to that. What I do really struggle with is creating an authentic older look from the 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s. When I research for recommendations regarding emulating older stocks, there’s not much to find.
Also it seems that the projection I saw has more flicker, a softer look, and a warmer appearance especially in the skin tones.
Also here’s two more sources I’m wanting to use as reference. They have a very pure film look, something I want to strive more for. Even many movies shot on film today overdo it with the digital color grading that it ends up looking too similar to digital.
Pretty sure the first one is 16mm, which is a very different aesthetic - but they definitely look awesome 😃

This is pretty amazing! Could this bring about a better image quality to the PT DVD deleted scenes?

Here are a few frames I scanned in with a Nikon 2000 some years ago from bits of a film trailer, if you want a look (I also have the full final 35mm theatrical release reel for AOTC, with the different wedding scene. But none of that is scanned.):

actually it’s late, sorry to be a tease hah, put up the rest tomorrow
…then why not just post tomorrow?
Hey emanswfan, any plans on including the audio track from Backstroke of the West in your ROTS filmized version? That would be pure Allah gold.
here are the rest:

well, didn’t realize it was quite so late and one is better than none

Is that for Anakin? Lol.
Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.
haha, yeah, and that was all part of the scene that got changed the most 35mm vs others so it seemed especially relevant here
Removed from my post for the surprise.

found four more, forget whether any of these came from flat or scope or a mix, I think scope, not sure anymore, vaguely seem to recall stretching some things out, think they were scanned at something like maybe 4k-5k or something and then downscaled to 1920x across

well these two are pretty close:
first cap from blu-ray from the site in the other:
https://i0.wp.com/caps.pictures/200/2-starwars2/full/starwars2-movie-screencaps.com-306.jpg
then my scan:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48767259407_eec471a1c2_o.jpg
actually they look quite different and compared to those screencaps, at least, mine actually does sorta show some hints of more detail (surprising since direct digital out should retain more detail for sure), certainly more microcontrast, if maybe at times a hint less detail in other cases and you can clearly see the grain in mine now, download both and then flip back and forth in a pic viewer and the grain and other differences are quite noticeable
color and luminance ramping are different too, now that maybe could be they didn’t time the trailers as carefully? maybe I didn’t have a LUT for the scanner to exactly match the film stock? the blu-ray was colored differently? just natural alteration of printing to film unless you perfectly pre-adjust it and the 35mm release was always different (and less accurate to original intent)?
more from the blu-ray screencaps site that are similar to my frames for you to comapre with (more and more it looks like either these caps were taken from a computer that either didn’t do max decoding or had jpgs too compressed or that Lucasfilm actually did some filtering and various jiggering around with the image):
https://i1.wp.com/caps.pictures/200/2-starwars2/full/starwars2-movie-screencaps.com-352.jpg
https://i0.wp.com/caps.pictures/200/2-starwars2/full/starwars2-movie-screencaps.com-592.jpg
something about these screencaps feels odd, like dingy, let me look at my bluray before I post more comparisons to caps from that website
well the blu-ray caps do look like my blu-ray
i guess my scans just have tons more contrast and a different luminance curve
now I’d need to go see what the 35mm frames look like, did my scanning do it properly or get the wrong curve
Well, the AOTC Blu-ray colors are all fucked up and there’s a ton of DNR and other processing done to it. That’s why 95% of all fan edits and other fan projects for AOTC are done using the high-bitrate HDTV caps, which have the right color and, even after some processing to reduce compression artifacts, more detail than the Blu-ray.
I’d be more surprised if your scans resembled the Blu-ray at all.
Just for fun, I tried correcting three of the trailer images with a global adjustment:
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
