Say goodbye to the cockpit set 😦

Be honest Ady, when no one else was around, did you play around in the cockpit?

oh we all had a play in the cockpit when filming was done 😉

Come on, Ady there are children here. Let’s keep things PG. 😉

Ady has said the entire time that only the OT is canon for his edits, and when he still planned to edit the PT it would have been altered to match the OT, not the other way around. And that he won’t be editing anything to fit the Disney films since there’s no guarantee a future film won’t contradict something he did as we learn more about the new canon - best to keep it all internally consistent with the OT itself, since that’s less likely to cause issues.

This.

It is kind of amazing. I don’t begrudge Ady at all, since it’s his meticulous dedication that’s making the absolute gold standard for fanedits, but the timescales here (enough to generate nostalgia) are nuts. I’m sure there’re a handful of us that check these threads not far off daily, and yet, for all we know, we’re looking at another decade or so until we see Eps 4 and 6. And yet we’re all along for the ride, because we know Ady is going to deliver something incredible for the amount of time spent.

I guess the tone of my last post was read a certain way that made people defensive. I didn’t ask whether Adywan was free to make his fan edits however he wanted. I asked whether he was now taking the lead from the newer movies in his edits. That’s it. Anybody want to take me to task for that now? Just checking. 😉

“One funny thing, the notion that Rey is not a Mary Sue (or that Luke is a Gary Stu, so that makes it okay) is off. As thousands of others have pointed out, Luke suddenly knowing how to use a lightsaber (after training with Yoda) does actually make a certain amount of sense (and even if some of those scenes were deleted, they’re described in the novelization that was released before the movie). While Luke is portrayed (and assumed in other canon) to have just flown the equivalent of an aeroplane before he jumped into an X-Wing, with only a few seconds of doubt from Red Leader (and he gets the hang of it in minutes, notice Luke only goofs up a few things during the battle)… Rey on the other hand flat out admits she’s never left the planet, she doesn’t know why she has skills, and flies the Falcon for the first time at least as well (if not better) than Han or Lando do in ESB or ROTJ respectively (Han is even implied to be impressed with her). So she got less training in both areas before she was shown to be talented and effective, whereas Luke spends much more time failing and screwing up. Watch the movies again and tell me I’m wrong.”

More of my boring rant here: https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Cant-be-Bothered-justifying-Reys-power-vs-Lukes/id/67001#1278035.

I personally don’t feel there’s enough good in any of the new movies to warrant salvaging them with edits (except perhaps Rogue One). It was inevitable that some would try though, and good luck to them!
Carry on…

Mod Edit: A quick reminder that the Star Wars Preservation and Star Wars Fan Edit sections of the site are NOT the places to bash on certain eras or aspects of the films, actors, film-makers or owners.

Critiquing a scene in the Star Wars Fan Edits section with the aim of improving it, removing it, altering it etc is perfectly fine. Statements along the lines of ‘Disney sucks’ and ‘this film is so shit no Fan Edit can save it’ is not.

Why they made the Ewoks blink but left Yoda’s eyes like that is beyond me.

FIRST PROPER CLIP FROM ROTJ:R.

Here is the first clip that has some FX work added and some editing tweaks. Although the torture of the droid at the beginning is likely to be removed in the final version, everything is pretty much as it will appear in ROTJ:R. Tweaks done to Jabba’s & Sy’s mouth, a blink now and then on the creatures ( only one is complete so far in this), re-edited the original, integrating some of the SE shots, and organising shots to sync up better with Sy’s vocals. Using the great 4k83 restorations as a basis for this, along with the blu-ray, some colour grading (which is still in progress) and some more scratch/ speckle clean up work to be done. Some FX work needs to be done on a couple of shots where i need to fix the background ( mainly the side shot of Oola from the SE’s where they shot her against a blue-screen but added a character in the background that isn’t there in the shots before or after)Sound is, as usual, a very rough temp track as the sound side of things won’t start until the visual side of the film is completed.

Looks great. Very happy to see Lapti Nek is back.

That picture looks great for that scene. The BluRay is cast in a deep blue. It looks like you’ve cut it in such a way to favor BluRay-sourced footage, but it shouldn’t be noticeable unless someone has the original scene committed to memory.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Actually i hardly used Blu-Ray sourced footage for this scene. The shots below are the only ones i used from the blu-ray. The rest is all 4k83 sourced

Thanks, Ady! Lookin’ good! 😃 I know the audio is temporary and whatnot, but will the timing/animation be tweaked for the first time Jabba says “boska!”? (or whatever it is) Not sure why they had him say it twice, maybe as a way of showing his anger or frustration.

This is looking great, Adywan! I’ve been waiting for ROTJ to finally come around! There’s probably no point in my pointing this out because you’ve probably already seen it buuuuut: at around 33 seconds into the clip Sy raises her arm and you can see the rod that operates it.

By-the-way, how have I never noticed the fireplace behind Jabba?

I assumed the re-editing was to minimize using another source. I guess it’s a testament to the cleanup and color correction you’ve done. 😉

After my recent absence these past weeks due to a sudden family tragedy, it was good to check in today and find your efforts seem to be progressing well adywan.

ROTJ:R is nicely on target by the looks of things, and I hope to add a thought or three eventually. Coming back to those previews of your B-wing shoot and Jabba’s lair clip made my day! Terrific work as always. 😃

It’s all looking quite good. Return of the Jedi, while they upped the technicality of some of the effects work, it just hasn’t aged very nicely. Your Jabba’s palace work looks better than I ever remember seeing it.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Yes this is going down the right path IMO. One thing I tried a while back was once the line “Shall I hold?” is said, I kept Vader from responding on screen. That way, we’re left wondering what Vader is thinking.

That’s a really good idea. I don’t know how much editing Ady is doing on the actual story but I sincerely think its possible to make the film much better. I think theres some work especially we can do in Jabbas palace and the throne room when the emperor taunts luke.

OK, I feel like this has been suggested or might even have been one of Ady original points but, how about making the work on the DSII look more active. Like flickering blue-white lights like wielding and small specs hovering around working on the hull.

And those same specks fleeing when the place starts falling apart. For example, during Luke’s escape.

They told me they’d fixed it!
