Hal, you’ve saved this movie for me! I have my own changes in mind (I think you cut a little too much of the comedy), but this really removes most of the cringe moments. Thank you. 🙂

I’m prepping a V2 of this project, which hopefully will be published in the near future. Here’s the changelist compared to V1:

  • It seems that my color correction made for some nasty digital noise in the black areas. I’ve redone it to avoid this problem by using a different method and not going as far.

  • Reinstate Hux being berated by Snoke after the opening battle. This cut felt conspicuous upon my last viewing.

  • Use Poppasketti’s awesome musical alteration when Luke tosses the saber.

  • Use Poppasketti’s slight audio adjustment to my transition(s) from ‘Luke Has a Moment’ to Poe and Finn’s deleted scene.

  • Reinstate Finn telling Rose to breathe.

  • Reinstate Poe’s line “A what now?” before Finn’s removed line about “miniaturized Death Star tech,” ala Poppasketti.

  • Reinstate Finn’s full self-sacrifice attack run.

Just in case, a few very light suggestions 😃

Would you be considering to reinstate this as well ?

Removed the detail from Kylo Ren that Rey’s parents are buried in the Jakku desert, as this seems at odds with the vision we saw in The Force Awakens.

I don’t think it’s inconsistent with TFA, besides it ends once and for all the “Rey parents” subtheme.

The deleted shuttle scene of Finn and Rose heading back “where we belong” was restored here as well. Not only does it give more resolution to Finn and Rose’s now-trimmed escape, it’s also a callback to the restored deleted scene when Poe gives Finn his jacket

I believe it would work fine to conclude Finn’s arc.

Reinstate Hux being berated by Snoke after the opening battle. This cut felt conspicuous upon my last viewing.

Yeah I kinda agree the cut might feel hard on this one. Would a compromise be found with the scene ending when Hux is notified Snoke wants to talk with him ? (which is exactly what we see later, Hux leaving Snoke HQ).

And since you’re making a v2, I quote my own previous post 😄 :

Ok, just a little something, an idea in case it would be possible to implement it in a v2 (if there is at some point a v2, of course), in order to smoother the only issue I have with this edit, ie the close up on the ring at the end of the movie. When I’ve watched the edit with people who’ve only seen the movie once a few month ago in theater and forgot quite a bit about it, there was a single question: not “who’s this boy?”, no, but “what’s this ring?”. So, I’ve found a solution. Good or bad, tell me, here it is:

  • just before the fathier chase, Rose shows this ring to the kid via a close up on it (around 1:06:25 of the theatrical cut);

  • even long before this scene (around 0:36:00 of the edit), Holdo’s “state of the Resistance” speech evoques their symbol.

What about inserting the shot on Rose’s ring when Holdo mentions the symbol ? If you look at the Canto Bight ring shot, you only see the hands and the ring, nothing else. The close up on Poe at 0:36:40 should be replaced or shortened with the implementation of the close up on Rose’s ring.

Just an idea that would fix the only moment of the edit where people may say “hey, there is something missing for me to fully understand the ending !”.

That’s being said, good luck ! (and don’t hesitate to ask me if you need to alter the subtitles)

Will you be editing similar to poppasketti and removing Rose attacking and have Finn be shot down instead?

^ Mala, thanks for the reminder about those suggestions. I will continue to keep removed Kylo’s mention that Rey’s parents are dead and buried. It seems like the gist of the ‘revelation’ is that Rey is finally admitting to herself what she already know to be true, in an annoyingly similar way as in Maz’s basement in TFA: her parents abandoned her and are gone for good. It seems not only unnecessary to depict them as dead, but slightly incongruous to the vision in TFA in which they are clearly leaving Jakku after dumping her there. Why would they be buried there? Also, that particular detail is the only thing that Rey would presumably not have already known, and it may be more effective to remain purely in the realm of Rey’s suppressed knowledge. That’s probably how Kylo Ren acquired the information anyway: from their mental battle in TFA.

Here’s a mockup of your ring idea. I’m not sure about it, though. Now, I imagine the question would become either, “How’d that boy get that ring?” or “Is that boy connected to Holdo somehow?” But I would like feedback from others about this one. If these are supposed to be Holdo’s hands, they are dirty and missing at least one ring.

DZ-330, no, I am not planning to remove Rose saving Finn. Other than reinstating Finn’s full attack run, it’ll remain as in V1.

I can’t argue against Malà’s screening with friends, and how they were confused about the ring. I would hope/think that isn’t everyone’s reaction?

However, I don’t think adding the shot of Rose’s hands here really works. Judging it by the standard Hal has set of making changes that are seamless and could pass for official, I think if the original intention in production was to have Holdo call out the symbol of the resistance, she would have held her hands up, or looked down at her hands, or there were have been a closeup of her clutching something that we cut back to when she reveals the ring. I do like that her hands shake when she says “the oppressed and the downtrodden know our symbol”, as if she was holding something. I’m just not sure it’s convincing enough.

I think if the ring is an issue, the best solution is cut the ring shot at the end. I know this was suggested before, though, and pointed out that it would be very difficult to make the cut work with the end music. If I get a chance in the next couple days, I could try to mock that up if that would help discussion.

Personally, I don’t find the ring to be an issue, as long as the audience recognized the symbol. The rebel alliance is not new, and these kids playing with Luke toys could reasonably have found a ring on their own in some way.

Author

And you would be right to do so ! Thanks for taking the time to create this mockup which shows the idea indeed doesn’t work at all. Audiences should just pay attention to the rebel symbol displayed on every single rebel uniform since ANH 😃

I don’t have any more suggestions 😄

Author

No, I’m glad you suggested it; it could only have helped.
And I’ve got the subtitles straightened out. It was pretty easy because there were only a few changes from V1 which affected sync.

V2 is complete, and should be appearing in the usual places within the next several hours. Thanks again to all involved; I couldn’t have done this alone. I’m very happy with the results, especially after giving things another pass after a total of a year has passed since beginning to chew on this film. Thanks to your contributions, I feel that if this were beamed to a theater a year ago on opening night, it would’ve done just fine.
And if you like what you see here but wish more was done, poppasketti’s edit is pretty kickass, too. I like the pairing; we’ve both borrowed from and contributed a fair amount to the other.

Nice, it seems to get closer and closer to the perfect cut I have in mind 😃

The way things are for me now, there is much more inertia in a project like this. So, while anything is possible, this is intended as final. Being a conservative cut, hopefully it will turn out to be.

I complete agree. This is what should have been released.

I’m downloading the new version right now. Very excited for an improved version of Legendary, congratulations!

Thanks Hal 9000,

Both your Force Awakens: Restructured and this edit The Last Jedi: Legendary have been my go to versions over the theatricals so am very pleased to hear you’ve somehow improved your Legacy edit even more.

Hope to one day get the editing skills enough to edit back in the caretakers just so we can get the deleted raid scene on the island in there as it gives so much to the Rey & Luke story arc but we all cant have everthing can we ;]

Thanks again Hal 9000

I gave a snarky answer, partly because I often have a baby in my arms while trying to post here nowadays. But, I really don’t have an issue with the space Leia scene.

Say no more I have two little ones myself and I barley get a chance to post comments let alone edit a film like yourself so can completely understand.

Just watched Legendary V2 on the weekend. It was my third viewing of the film overall (first 2 were the theatrical cut a year ago) and something clicked. I now really, really like this film. Placing the Yoda scene where it is is probably the most effective fan edit ever made in the history of fan edits. I also like how you trimmed but kept most of the humor.

Thanks hal9000 your fan edits always are fun to watch, I watched this and it was almost perfect (i loved TLJ when it came out ) but… finn arc doesn’t make sense, if i watched this version in the teathers i would have thought , how finn become from "this is not my fight i only care about rey " and making an attempt to escape, to sacrificing himself to save the resistance, i don’t like canto bight but without him watching the effects of the war (the childs and the animals being torture) he doesn’t get a motivation to fight alongside the resistance (him not wanting to become like dj after his betray helps, but i don’t think that is enough) , in everything else this version is superior to original is just finn’s arc in this one that prevents it to becoming my to go version.

Just thinking out loud, but I guess one could reinstate the first Canto Bight sequence as it was and still remove the fathier sequence. We would see the Cinderella kids, and later we would just assume the broom boy always had a rebel alliance ring. It might actually give Finn more of a motivation to see evil and not really be able to do anything about it directly, y’know?

Either way, I’m glad you enjoyed the edit for the most part. Are there any edits at present that you’ve found you enjoy as a more solid film overall?
