Alright, I’m uploading the clip for download instead. I didn’t render it with audio so I thought it would evade copyright but I guess not.

So here’s the clip, it’s rendered at 50mbps x264 at 4K. Obviously this is streaming level quality appropriate for youtube and not UHD bluray quality but that should be fine for just a preview.

Video got taken down? I bet it looked amazing!

Not sure if this question was answered or not but are you using the Theatrical Reconstruction that’s up on the spleen for ROTS?

Jedit: Just saw the megalink gonna check it out

Looks much more appealing and film natural than your early concepts. I love how you managed to stick with the original timing but with a less video game aesthetic. The lightsabers always turn out weird in my experience. The deep blue doesn’t echo it’s intended look but it’s hard to fix. I’ve found that isolating the lightsabers in some way and using a transfer mode on top of the emulation helps add the luminance back to it.

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

While I have nothing wrong with color correction, I think if this is meant as a faithful upscale, you shouldn’t color correct it. Apply the grain first so that we have the original color balance upscaled. You can always color correct it after.

As for the preview, I think it looks way too grainy, but since the idea is consistency, I’d need to compare to the other films to see if it really does its intended job.

I mean, if it’s supposed to be a “faithful” upscale, it wouldn’t have grain, either. The color balance he did was to emulate how it would look when printed to film, hence the grain on top of that. So the color work is “faithful” in the same way the upscaling and grain are.

well, this thread’s called “Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions”, so i think that’s what the preview is a preview of.

Bump. Eager to see more previews! Even just frames 😃

Now that we have access to an actual 35mm print of Attack of the Clones, I think AOTC would be best as a cleaned-up version of poita’s 35mm scan. The copy itself is owned by Schorman.

I think that would be an entirely separate project from this with different goals.

Hey emanswfan, with the current 35mm print projects of the PT would you be willing to work on a version 2.0 a few years down the road? You know, to iron out any inaccuracies and bring it closer to the look of a 35mm print?

emanswfan, do you plan on releasing a 1080p version of this? none of my machines can handle 4K…

I plan on releasing both 1080p and 4K versions.

I pretty much have very little more work to be done on version 1 of ROTS. I still need to check certain scenes and make some more tweaks.

There’s a lot more things I want to do with this project, which is why I’m planning to release multiple versions over time similar to what Harmy does with despecialized.

First versions will be single pass grades of each of the films, as well as the deleted scenes, hd and upscaled ones.

Later versions will introduce better upscaling and decompression restoration techniques, new “filmizing” techniques, shot by shot color grading and actual changes to the color direction of the films. I also plan on starting HDR10 grades on all the films once I have the proper calibrated equipment.

I also have planned to release higher quality restored versions of all the deleted scenes that have finished or near finished vfx.

Currently I’m on a bit of hold as I’m taking new classes and picked up a new job with more hours. Sundays are pretty much my only free day especially going into the holidays. But rest assured I’ll be back on it as soon as I can be. As much as I love this project, life still has to be priority #1.

When I started this project, I was on Windows and currently now I’m on mac. I plan on returning to a Windows based environment to work once I build a new computer system for myself as a lot of the restoration software I plan on using in later versions is windows-only.

I can render out version 1 of ROTS in January, so look forward to that!

JEDIT: One quick thing also! I will say I’ve had more motivation and drive to work on this project ever since Adywan’s revisited PT was cancelled. I’m a huge fan of his work on the OT, and while don’t think I can ever live up to his work I feel like I have to be the one now to give some of the necessary work to help make the prequels better, at least from a visual standpoint. I hope these releases can be both superior viewing options for the fans of these films and resources to fan editors that are not satisfied with the prequels.

Thanks very much for the update and all your work. Lots to look forward to. I’m planning to use your version as the basis for my own fan edit of ROTS.

Good to hear. January can’t come soon enough! Planning on any more previews from now until then?
