Star Wars SE 4K - 1997 (Released)

Hello everyone, yes this is the same print as you have seen mentioned a few times now,
and you’ve probably seen previews of it also.

But this is a different scan, and we hope to have a relatively ‘quick’ turnaround
on it.

For starters, here’s a look at Reel 1. A few members have seen this projected
in a theater before, so we have a great idea of the colors, and what needs
to be adjusted.

Its a fairly clean print, so there’s not too much work to do, to clean it up.
Here’s a sample of shots from Reel 1:

Looking forward to seeing this.

Is the SE’s color timing worth leaning on in terms of other projects? What I specifically mean is if you choose to despecialize this SE scan using 4k77, would you retime the SE to match 4k77 or the other way around?

Great question! I don’t have an answer, but it is a great question.

One thing of note, concerning Reel 1, is that our prior previews were taken from a different print, so if there are any differences in color, dust, dirt, etc, it’s because of that.

Is it possible to request a specific screen grab? Otherwise, looks good and can’t wait!

It makes sense that this reel looks so yellow, considering that the SE was timed to the Tech print in George’s possession and the Tech prints look very yellow here as well.

If that is the case, would one be able to get a closer theatrical look with a simple white balance or would it require more color passes than that?

Yes, the print looks warmer in these shots. The Tech print that Lucasfilm used, is the same
one we used for the 4K77 version. They never owned one, and had to borrow one from a
private collection. However, it has more of a green cast.

Here are some very good natural looking colors for this print.

I think retiming 4k77 to the 97SE would work for despecialization, within limits. IMO every release of Star Wars after the theatrical 97SE is completely useless in terms of color, but the 97SE may be a usable reference with adjustments. It was supposedly timed to match 1977 Technicolor prints, and it certainly seems plausibly close overall. But there would certainly need to be adjustments for particular shots, if not overall.

Here are the final 2 reel previews:

Reel 5

Reel 6

This is going to be a fairly quick, no frills version.
If people are inclined to really restore it, they may wish to do so.
However, we want to ramp up the Empire Strikes Back, Living Daylights,
and Raiders project. So this won’t be very involved.

Is there going to be an ESB and ROTJ SE 4K - 1997 also?

Excuse me? A question, will you upload the completed version on Mega, or will you pm a download link? I would love to enjoy the Special Editions and how they looked in theaters, I’ve only watched the Despecialized Editions, 4K77 and 4K83, and on rare occasions I do a marathon of all of the films, so I will view them December 2019 for Star Wars IX, So I would love to have a download of this, thanks a bunch and hope to get a reply soon!!

Definitely sad that my account on a certain tracker went inactive. I’ve been looking for this project outside of there for a long time… maybe one day I’ll find it.

Is it even available there?

Not sure if this invite code still works, but maybe you can try here:

It isn’t. When they were accepting new people on forums.thestarwarstrilogy.com in December I had an issue with the email registration sending after the confirmation time expired. It would have been my intention to upload it to the Spleen (if I received permission) but sadly, no dice.

Williarob if you read this, don’t worry about it. I have too much respect for the work you guys do to hit-and-run your site. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure it’s a raw scan and still needs work before it’s ready to replace Harmy’s edition so I’m not really chomping at the bit to get it tbh.

It is extremely beautiful nonetheless. It doesn’t have that awful orange/pink tint the laserdisc has. Or the DNR smear.

If you are talking about the 97 scan i think you are.

I am. I’ll get it by my usual means. It’s just a factor of time. I’ll get around to watching it eventually.
