The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released) — Page 27

Having done a copycat job of darthrush’s ladder kick removal, I think I’m about ready to render out a ‘sync-locked’ version for Mala to work with.

Does anyone have anything else to toss out here?

Sounds good to me. If other tweaks are made, just keep a logbook of the number of frames removed/added and the section which is concerned.

If I’m not mistaken, here is the current state for workprint#3:

New changes:

  • Rescore the Luke deleted scene with Torn Apart
  • Trim even further the heavy, direct hinting before Snoke’s death (add Torn Apart strings)
  • Trim the ladder sequence with Rose’s sister
  • Removing Snoke berating Hux at the end of the opening battle

Work in progress changes (video only):

  • Apply DrDre’s LUT to the complete movie

Changes considered/postponed:

  • Sir Ridley’s enhanced Yoda puppetry (postponed)
  • Remove the captain obvious scene of the “we’re taking heavy loses” (still considered ?)
  • Remove Poe’s “big ass door” (feasible ?)

Already in Workprint#2:

  • Trimmed the opening ‘prank call’ joke to prevent it from venturing into SNL territory while retaining the core of the humor
  • Reinstated the ‘Luke Has a Moment’ deleted scene
  • Reinstated the deleted scene where Poe gives Finn back his jacket (with scene transition provided by OT.com user pleasehello)
  • At their first meeting, removed Finn telling Rose to breathe
  • Removed Rose repeating, “They can track us through lightspeed.“
  • Removed both appearances from the ‘Caretakers’ on Ach-to (with a visual effects shot courtesy of OT.com user snooker)
  • Trimmed away the lone porg who gives Chewie the doughy eyes, though leaving the joke intact otherwise
  • Removed Luke’s line to R2, “Nothing can make me change my mind.”
  • Cut down the first sequence at Canto Bight to focus solely on finding the master codebreaker (also removing sounds of coins rattling around inside BB8 in two shots)
  • Blended the original Anakin lightsaber ignition sound with the existing different sounds for two shots
  • Made it appear as though Finn and Rose follow DJ out of the cell, briefly elude the guards, and the scene ends. Next time we see the trio, they are already in hyperspace (also removing the implication in the later scene that BB8 helped steal the ship).
  • Removed Rey asking Kylo Ren is he has a cowl to put on
  • Added a center wipe transition from the scene with Finn, Rose, and DJ in hyperspace to the fleet losing their medical frigate
  • Used a few shots from a deleted scene to remove the iron/spaceship gag, which borrowed from an old spoof which laughed at Star Wars rather than along with Star Wars
  • Trimmed some of the comedy with BB8 being placed under a basket
  • Removed the detail from Kylo Ren that Rey’s parents are buried in the Jakku desert, as this seems at odds with the vision we saw in The Force Awakens.
  • Moved the scene with Luke and Yoda to immediately prior to Leia looking out over Crait (using audio and video provided by OT.com user Darthrush)
  • Removed Finn’s line about the battering ram canon being “old Death Star tech.”
  • The crate Luke sits on as he talks with Leia is now stationary and motionless, unaffected by him (effect provided by OT.com user poppasketti)
Removed Rey’s triple-TIE combo shot, with the Falcon’s involvement in the battle being first revealed with its shadow swee- ping by and a single TIE being shot down
  • Trimmed Hux ordering fighters to follow the Falcon, leaving this poor tactical move to be attributed to Kylo Ren’s emotional priorities
  • Removed Finn’s line, “Oh, they hate that ship!”
  • Abbreviated Finn’s suicide run, so that the audience hasn’t had enough time to accept it and get totally on board with it (toward the end of a film that relishes jerking its audience around)
  • After Rose saves Finn, removed her line about not “fighting what we hate” and “saving what we love.”
  • Snuck in a Wilhelm scream… somewhere in the movie.

I think that’s all correct, Mala, thank you!
I did try removing the “we’re taking heavy losses,” but it seemed just a little ‘off’ merging the two sequences before and after. The music and composition is based on having a brief cutaway. It doesn’t bother me at all, and it’s not worth cutting if it introduces even a slight jarr. shrugs 😦

That’s ok, I felt it wouldn’t be seamless to remove it, it’s not a big deal at all. So I guess we can go for workprint#3 as the final version ?

Just to review Hal, how is the structure of the film changed with the added deleted scene of Luke Mourning?

Rey Confronts Luke
Luke Has A Moment
Out of Hyperspace with Leia
Poe and Finn Jacket Scene
Leia Slaps Poe
Luke’s Daily Routine

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

I re-watch TFA restructured so often, that I am getting really excited for the finished product for this film. I left a spot for it in the box set I am making. Hal, your edits are simply the best.

Shouldn’t you leave a spot for Episode 9?!

lol By the time that movie comes out, and should Hal decide to edit it, I’ll probably need to make a fresh box. I’m remaining hopeful that episode 9 will be an amazing Star Wars movie that won’t need any fan adjustments at all. But I am not holding my breath. lol

Are those my [ripoffs of phildesfr’s] covers for HAL’s PT? 😄 Glad to see they’re being used by someone!

That’s wonderful! If I had much of a physical media collection I’d have to put something like that together for myself as well. Very fulfilling to see something so concrete come out of all this stuff.

I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down and vet everything I’ve done so far. I am currently rendering out a “golden master” to be used for sync for Mala. I don’t think anything is different from the prior workprint that would affect sync, though I could be wrong. Better to render a fresh encode just in case. Poppasketti was kind enough to remove a few more white specks from deleted scene footage, and I made several small audio tweaks and other things like that. Only thing left is to apply DrDre’s LUT, which I still haven’t found a good solution for. Might be possible to render out my entire project to ProRes, and apply it using FCPX. That’ll be a headache for another time.

There will always be, just like with the prequels, cool new ideas introduced as time goes on. However, my goal here is just to make a somewhat conservative edit to get the film into a more palatable state, which to my mind required a more radical approach than with TFA. In that spirit, I hope not to do a V2 in the future. You never know, though. But, unlike with TFA:R V1, I’m actually happy with this one and feel I’ve accomplished (enough of) what I set out to do.

Have you ever considered making it so that Luke simply hands Rey the lightsaber back (using reversed footage) and storms off? The way Luke tosses the lightsaber in the movie is obviously played off to be some sort of joke in a very serious moment.

I believe Ivan Ortega’s edit does this.

Yeah but the issue is that the actors obviously don’t play the scene that way. Besides you have other issues with that (Rey doesn’t have the saber in her hands when Luke walks away… and why would she walks to the shore ?).

Author

Yeah, that idea wouldn’t play out well at all IMHO. I’d prefer Luke dramatically tossing the saber somewhat off to the side ala “Never… I’ll never turn to the dark side” over the deadpan beat we have in the movie. I think it’s important that he toss the saber, though. Given no recourse, it has to stay as is. I didn’t hate the moment, at least not the first viewing.

Turns out LUTs are very easy to apply in FCPX. So the plan is to render out lossless video from FCP7, and encode to distribution formats from FCPX after applying DrDre’s color correction.

Just watched the ortega Clip it’s Hella Good, I think it could be better if it used tfa footage of rey walking up (like how dig mod cut it off tfa) but is definetly better than the sabers toss, starts the movie on the wrong foot

I could do without some of his commentary but Ortega’s edit of that scene is pretty great.

Can you make a 4K version of this edit with HDR?

I’m sure he’d love to if you’d buy him a workstation and software that can handle working in 4K with HDR. 😃
