This film is tracking poorly. I wonder how much of that is bad PR, how much is TLJ carryover, how much is fatigue and how much is people just not caring about this film?

Maybe it’s just because it’s bad and many people assume it is that bad without taking the chance to watch it (and are right to do so) ?

Worry what it will do to future stand-alone, let alone a SOLO sequel.

“Poorly” is a relative term.

I think it’s just reverting to a more normal blockbuster performance than SW is recently used to. The numbers are in line with the high end of average Marvel solo (heh) outings. Difference is with SW you had this pent up demand that made the first few movies upfront make a lot of money (Rogue One waaaay over performed), whereas Marvel slowly built up the demand.

Bigger reasons than the ones you mentioned would be massive competition, and a short window between the release of this and TLJ.

People only see fan service when they want to.

I actually agree with Mala about all the references that seemed fan servicey to me. But those things didn’t make it a bad film. It was a fun ride for the most part. But I certainly liked all the other recent star wars films more.

I’d say this film had considerably more fan service than Rogue One, though what there was in Solo tended to be integrated better (save that red guy, which is worse than anything in RO).

Some people get automatically annoyed at the mere reference of something, and some jizz their pants (as if a wink to the fans is inherently bad/good and there’s no nuance there or relevance to the execution). For me it entirely depends.

Great example would be “I have a really good feeling about this.” Friend I saw it with hated that line. But I personally loved it - reference aside, it was a funny thing thing for him to say in that particular moment and revealed a lot about his character. One of the barometers for me is, does this joke or whatever work if you don’t know it’s a reference? Most of the ones in this passed that test (“I hate you,” “I know” is another).

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

Edited my post to clarify that I thought the fan service was mostly handled better in Solo, not Rogue One.

Maul is only fan service if he isn’t setting up a future film. If he’s just there so people are like “hey, I know that guy” , I get it. But if he’s the big bad in the next film, then it is worth it. If he’s written half as good as he was in Rebels, I’m in.

Only concern I would have would be having Solo interacting with Force users after he is so dismissive of the Force in ANH.

That’s not how that works.

If Maul is there just bc he’s that guy from TPM-> fan service
If Maul is there bc he’s important to this off-shoot film series going forward->not fan service

It’s not just that he’s there, it’s how he’s there. A future film could potentially use him in a way that’s relevant to the story and the character that goes beyond servicing fan desire for more Maul, but there’s nothing about the story of Solo that requires his presence, let alone a 2 minute scene, completely irrelevant to the rest of the film and not necessary for future films, where he ignites his lightsaber(?), of all things.

I also don’t believe that because something is set up doesn’t make it fan service. There’s a good argument that set up is a subset of fan service. The Jabba is both fan service and set up, though thankfully in a way that doesn’t detract from the film, like Maul does.

MEH, started off really really bad. 40 minutes in, I was in agony, every line was cringe-worthy, there were too many references/fan-service moments, and characters spent a lot of time talking about things vs. letting the audience see it. Once we meet Lando the movie really picks up, lots of fun moments are sprinkled throughout and the action scenes were shockingly suspenseful as well! I liked how they DIDN’T include Jabba, Boba Fett, Leia, young Luke, or any of that kinda crap in there. The actor playing Han Solo was all over the place though, he wasn’t written to have an arc and the character seemed to constantly shift from coward to clever over and over again. I liked that there were a few genuine surprises in there near the third act and I thought it was great that the mentor dude gets shot (first) and the girl completely screws Han over, that was very anti-Hollywood of them. The Darth Maul scene was dumb and ill-fitting, I’m sure it’s just set-up for the Obi-Wan movie or something. Saw Gerrara’s humanized extremist rebels was a cool addition, I like Now I’ll just list all the things that really pissed me off:

  • the humour (the theatre didn’t laugh once it was that bad)
  • Han speaks wookie
  • Solo is a name made up by a random imperial guy
  • Han works for the empire
  • Han putting the dice on the mirror 2900 times
  • Han getting his signature blaster from the mentor dude
  • Han pretending a rock was a thermal detonator
  • Lando’s droid talking about equal rights (the audience groaned) P O L I T I C A L C O M M E N T A R Y
  • Woody Harrelson’s crew showing up and then dying right away

  • Han works for the empire

Makes sense since he apparently knows ‘standard Imperial protocol’ in Empire.

  • Han pretending a rock was a thermal detonator

It was funny, and a nice callback to Jabba’s throne room. Also shows Han thinking on his feet.

  • Lando’s droid talking about equal rights (the audience groaned) P O L I T I C A L C O M M E N T A R Y

My audience laughed a lot (especially at her little interaction with Lando in the cockpit). Also, the reason that’s there isn’t for political commentary, it’s to set up the Kessel Uprising. When we first see her she’s angry at the droid fights, we are reminded of her droid-rights ideas in the cockpit, and it’s payed off on Kessel.

How is “slavery is wrong” a controversial position for a character to take?

What exactly was the point of Darth Maul being in the film? Are they building him up as the villain for future “standalones”.

There were groans in my theater during her “equal rights” joke, and there were cheers when L3 died.

Do you always care what the rest of the audience thinks? People cracked up in mine. YMMV

He doesn’t speak Shyriiwook very well, (which was really funny) just enough that a pissed off mud covered Wookiee becomes the best friend a guy could ever have. 😃

Han briefly served in the Empire in the later Han Solo books, so this concept is hardly new. He met Chewie as a result of that as well.

I didn’t count the number of dice shots.

He had to get the name from somewhere. Maybe he hated his father’s last name?

The thermal detonator ruse worked, didn’t it?

I’m sure there’s a deleted scene where he orders the blaster from an intergalactic Sears catalog or something. Pretty sure being given your signature gun is an old western movie trope.

It’s a sentient droid who’s really pissed off about other droids being slaves. A refreshing change from the usual obedient droids we’ve had in 99% of Star Wars. G E T O V E R I T

They didn’t die until near the end of the train heist. I was sad monkey man didn’t make it. I liked Woody’s lady friend too.

It seems like people who disliked the movie attended screenings where nobody liked it, and people who did like it attended screenings where people also enjoyed it. This goes for all four of the new films, it’s always the case.

Not enough people read the EU.

Wait, you guys REALLY liked the droid? Am I the only one who was glad when she was finally destroyed?

(L3 is the best SW character since Jar Jar Binks)

I’ll go so far as to say she’s even more insufferable than Jar Jar Binks.
At least it was clear Jar Jar was intended to be an obnoxious tool.

Thankfully she wasn’t in it long, and I liked 90% of the rest of the film.

Where has George ever said that was his intent for the character?

I more meant the intent was to make Jar Jar an obnoxious clown, because George thought he’d be funny.

The execution was off but I don’t think it’s too up for debate that Jar Jar was never meant to be a Representative in the Senat- Oh wait 😉
