If Jabba’s palace is on Tattoine and Jabba has a bounty on Solo’s life, why would Han chose to hang out in a bar on Tattoine when he has the REST OF THE GALAXY TO HIDE in?

I assume he had to deliver a shipment to Tatooine, wanted a drink while there, and hoped no one would notice him chilling in a dark corner with a lady.

But yes it was not a great decision.

ROTJ Storyboard Reconstruction Project

Viewing in light of the whole trilogy and not just within the confines of ANH, I always kinda assumed it went down like this:

Han was enroute to Tatooine with a shipment of spice for Jabba. The Star Destroyers that were in orbit (the same ones that chase them as they leave Tatooine) or some smaller ships dispatched from said Star Destroyers intercept and board the Falcon as it approaches the planet. Han obviously dumps the cargo at some point prior to being boarded. He passes the inspection and lands safely in Mos Eisley. He’s got no money thanks to failing his delivery so he’s now looking for a way to get off planet ASAP. Which explains why he’s hanging out “where most of the best pilots can be found”. He needs a job and quick! Which also explains why he takes such obviously risky passengers.

In the meantime, Jabba gets wind of Han’s failure and immediately puts out a bounty on him and people like Greedo start combing the most likely places to find him.

So, in typical “Han” fashion, it’s not some long drawn out drama. All of that happened VERY recently and it was a whirlwind, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants adventure that led him to even consider taking the job of carrying Luke and Co. which then led to the next wild adventure rescuing the princess and so on, etc. etc.

ALSO: it’s worth considering the deleted scene that had Jabba living on Tatooine even in ANH. While it may not have been in the final cut of the film, as far as George was concerned Jabba was located on Tatooine long before ROTJ made it canon. Heck, it was in the comics (and novel?) back then. Which means it HAD to be something along the lines of my ideas above all along.

He knew Jabba was big, fat, and slow, and could do nothing, and I assume he also knew that the only bounty hunters in town at the time were the likes of Greedo he could easily best, so he didn’t have to rush off anywhere. That’s how I see it at least.

Fantastic Films magazine? They did a lot of wild speculating back in the day between sequels. I need to find those and see if anything was on the money.

I can’t say anything about Fantastic Films, but I did find some speculations in the letters page of some of the Marvel SW comics I recently got. Those readers did sometimes have quite on-the-nose ideas about the upcoming movies.

I think it’s especially funny to read the fan reactions to the Han-Leia-Luke love triangle prior to ROTJ. This one fan in 1980 even speculated that Yoda’s reference to “another” was a nod to a possible child of Luke and Leia. On the other hand, one fan unintentionally suggested that they were siblings while complaining about a lack of romantic tension between the two in the comic series.

I lament that those letter columns don’t make it into reprints. Maybe they’d have to track these people down to get permission?

And why the heck didn’t I ever write them a letter demanding Jaxxon’s return? 😉

Could be. After all they included the full names and adresses of the people who wrote the letters. Might be iffy to reprint something like that.

It really is a loss though. Too bad they never just blurred/crossed-out the personal info, or something like that, and just included them in the reprints anyway. One of my main motivations for tracking down original copies is so that I can read the letter columns.

I forgot about that detail! I wonder if it was done to discourage nasty letters? I doubt that would fly today.

The Soundtrack Show podcast is currently in the midst of a 6-part series on the first film’s score. It’s very in-depth and I can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone who likes to nerd out about the music.

I have a idea for a edit were the ending celabation music from ROTJ is replaced with Backstreet Boys - Everybody.
