The reason TPM looks a lot more like a SW movie is because it was shot on film + they used real sets and locations which is its saving grace unlike the latter two prequels where Lucas went overboard with 99% CGI alien characters as opposed to the OT where non-human characters were either people in costumes or puppets and of course the obvious nauseating blue/green screen backgrounds, speaking of which, I once read that when Ewan McGregor was approached by Michael Bay for the movie The Island when he wrapped up ROTS he was reluctant at first because he was tired of shooting in front of blue screens and green screens but Bay told him not to worry because he prefers practical effects.

Breathe. Just…breathe.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’m in a similar boat with you. I saw and enjoyed all the PT films when I was a kid but at the time I didn’t think either TPM or AOTC quite measured up to the OT (AOTC in particular was something of a disappointment to me at the time).

Huh. I liked the prequels more than the OT for years as a child. It wasn’t until I was 12 that I came to find them inferior. For a while I really disliked them, but now I’ve come back around and enjoy them again (except TPM, what a slog).

Well I was blessed with the OT before I saw the PT so I knew what was good right beforehand and had that to measure the PT against.

Yeah but, so was I, sorta. Well, I started with TPM, which I thought was okay, then I went on to the OT which I enjoyed, and then watched AOTC and ROTS which blew me out of the water.

But, like, why though?

Man, I can’t really remember. I think because they had better special effects and more fight scenes.

Not enough people read the EU.

He’s right though (at least the part about TPM, no idea about The Island stuff).

They didn’t though. They were more fancy yes, but except for a couple instances where they look dated I would say the ots effects looked more realistic. They just weren’t as wild.

It’s not that the prequel special effects haven’t aged well, they were bad even back then.

Controversial Opinion: I don’t think they’re that bad.

Some of it’s pretty good. I didn’t realize for a while that ALL of the clone troopers are CGI.

But the bad stuff is really bad, and on balance it’s mostly bad stuff.

for aotc maybe, for rots no.

I guess it’s good if you like watching video game cutscenes…

Author
Time

computers tend to lack the ability of identifying good cgi.
that’s not the case with robots.

Author

I thought the opening scene of ROTS looked fake in the theater as a fifth grader. Granted that was the only thing I noticed at the time but still.

Author
Time

Using cgi for clone troopers was just a terrible idea.

Yeah, it was a dumb idea, but they convinced my 13 year old self in AOTC.

They did not convince my 16 year old self in ROTS, though.

Author

The way I see it, if I start to notice and complain about bad cgi, it’s because nothing else in the movie was worth my attention. Therefore the cg in the prequels is bad, not just because it looks fake and ugly, but because everything else already felt fake, and made everything look even faker than it already looked.

If that makes sense.

I can’t believe there are so many CGI apologists.
