Great job so far dude! Ive always wanted these scenes cleaned up and inserted into the original film to reflect the book and comic I remember as a kid. I would prefer the clean version though. Look forward to the finished product.

Have you also stablized these too?

Prequels and SE notwithstanding, this is the only time we saw vaporators near or in a dwelling.

Would be cool to see more of these things, whatever they are?

Exhaust vents?

I do like the idea of abandoned structures out in the desert. There could be entire ghost towns on Tatooine for all we know.

Looks great, much improved! If I can make a few suggestions for improvement on your “molested” version:

I would flatten out the colors on the background elements, especially the doorways on the houses at screen left. Nothing would be this black in the far background due to atmospheric haze, airborne sand etc, and likewise the highlights would be more obscured. I’d bring up the black output levels on those elements and bring the white output down. In After Effects you’d do this by adding a Levels filter and move the black and white output sliders in toward each other a bit. Note on the original vaporators behind Luke, there are no very dark areas on them although Luke has some quite strong shadows on his white clothing, and the farther vaporator shows an even greater flattening with dimmer highlights as well.

You may also want to desaturate the colors slightly. Likewise, the added vaporator ground shadows are very dark, and too angled toward the horizon. They should be much more foreshortened with greater distance. Note on the original vaporators, the shadows are very faint, basically a darker shade of sand, and they extend almost straight out to screen left.

I hope this is helpful, overall your cleanup job looks amazing, this is just nitpicking from a guy who’s worked in visual effects for 20 years!

I’m not much more than an interpreter, and not very good at telling stories. Well, not at making them interesting, anyway.

I’m fond of the houses, but think they’d be better suited to just peaking over from behind the furthest back dunes. We know that there are nearby homes, since Cliegg was able to rouse a group of 30 to search for Shmi.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

One more note about that vaporator shadow:
Vaporator
It definitely should be rotated to the left and thinned, since shadows can appear to converge when they get nearer to the horizon:
Alamy Shadows

Also, a vaporator that close to the horizon should be extremely small with a shadow that is practically invisible.
…thanks alamy.

So, like all attempts at cleaning the deleted scenes, I assume this is dead?

I was considering trying to Hatch a “Bolt On” project thread where a Library of excised material, be it video or Audio or fixes could be assembled for a sort of DIY add on experience.

A Place where people could share small clips or sequences basically attempts at making an alternate or extended experience with re-edits and so on. but without having to do an entire film…

I personally don’t think there is a huge swathe of cut content worth including but there are small things scattered throughout the OT that are worth doing, be it either theatrical or special edition. Before you know it all of a sudden you end up with quite a lot of Content and options.

I am pondering perhaps a Bolt on for de-specialized with original cut content.

but not opposed to Special edition upgrades or replacements either.

Basically custom set’s of cut content or new material AKA Special Edition shots.

This would be a DIY pack not a proper release and I would hope a collaboration of people chipping in ideas and content and ways to or ideas about how to… So you would have 2 types Original Cut content and Special edition type content.

Realistically though Original Cut Content for the Original Films may amount to 2 minutes per film if even that, Unless someone can clean it up. It would be more than likely quite a micro extension for each film as we simply do not have it in good enough quality and a lot is not worth adding. But alternative has more scope to it with extra bits.

Hey Sky_,

here are a couple threads that you may or may not have seen where others have tried to clean up the deleted scenes. You might be able to find some info on how they did it on these threads. Also look into avisynth to clean dirty frames.

I have been thinking about these 2 parts Luke with the binoculars and the whole Biggs thread.

I would put Luke with his Binoculars in between “A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY…” and the STAR WARS title card.

As far as the the visit to the station goes I would put that in after the escape pod fly’s towards tattooine.

for the second Bigg’s scene if it is indeed broken up then I would place that after R2-D2 rolls off and 3P0 go seperate ways or around that part.

I know the script says otherwise but it makes little sense any other way.

Interestingly also so far as the Bar scene is concerned there was a game being played and this may originally have been planned to be shown before Luke comes in the Bar. It’s like electronic pool game / air hockey top left image below.

It would have been pretty brief but anyway good luck.

EDIT

A bit of further complication…

once you add the scene of toushe station you can no longer have this shot heading towards mos eisley…

In fact this is the shot driving towards the station the landspeeder needs to be without 3P0 and R2-D2. And the Old woman get’s annoyed at speeding past her.

The replacement for heading towards mos eisley is this shot.

problem with this though is there are a load of cameramen and crew in frame when it pans across.

Sky_ I have just had a thought about this gap in the footage where Luke run’s up the stairs.

as I said previously I thought it might have been the game table in the bar.

I don’t think that makes much sense though. I now think as Luke goes up away from his speeder in this gap before he comes over the other side we see the escape pod shooting across the sky in the distance. Then obviously the irony is that they missed all the action. It’s another gag as they all clamour to see nothing going on in the far reaches of the atmosphere the big action that was more close to home was totally missed with bad timing.

In terms of the Luke Binoculars segment I would cut that down to about 10 seconds max. Or even consider unuseable. but it is a very short scene. Absolutely no Treadwell in the sequence. It needs to be as quick as is possible luke fiddling spots something looks through binoculars fx shot jumps in speeder and drives off if it could be done in 7 seconds it would be about right.

The cut in point may be after the Tantive uderbelly star destroyet shot. When we cut to the corridor with 3p0 and R2-D2 this is replaced by Luke. On the Underbelly this is where I think the first escape pod is launched and destroyed and the explosion is what draws luke’s attention to the sky above. potentially you could cut straight to the binoculars fx shot and then just have luke drive off.

Having looked at the unbelly sequence again just now I have goune back to my original position. between the opening title and a long time ago. fade up binoculats fx luke jumps in land speeder drives off title card and opening crawl.

For Vader and Bast scene take a lead from the holiday special on how much of the footage you need to work on as this is the cut that was to be used.

The Luke a bigs and toushe station scenes work in their entireity I think.

The blue milk I imagine tops off at about 3 seconds only seeing the milk poured cut to dinner table.

Reason for saying this is to perhaps cut the workload down and only concentrate on what is useable.
