Hey Harmy, any chance you would (could) restore the very first / opening day or whatever we call it version of Star Wars in 720p? The one which has the differently composited 3 optical shots and closing credits? If it’s actually possible, since the only source is probably the laserdiscs

Could you go into more detail about this? I’m mildly startled that I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. 😃

Certainly something to consider - it sucks that we can’t get seamless branching to work properly - I’d love to have one disc where you’d go to the menu and select between the US 1977 Version, US 1981 version or one of the foreign language versions, each with their own crawl, burned in subs and (for some) credits. I’m not sure if we have scans of both but it would be awesome to have both versions of the English credits as well, where one would run with the '77 version and the other with the '81 version.

And then the MKV release would be the US '77 version.

You forgot to mention the '97, '04 and '11 branching options…

There were print variations in the '77 release, due to last-minute changes and poor version control. The easiest-to-spot difference is the spacing in the credits around John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra. But there’s a different composite of the red planet in the sky over Yavin 4 (with/without clouds), etc. I’m not sure one is necessarily “first” and the others “second”, just a big mess of very slight differences.

The main problem with preserving these is quality–AFAIK there are no HD sources for the variants.

There is no variant with a second grappling hook throw or Luke meeting Biggs in the hangar, though 😉 Just little things.

I’m talking about the very early 77 version, check these threads

Yotsuya did a SD restoration : http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Yotsuyas-Saga-Preservation-and-Restoration/id/55257

I was wondering if there is a chance that the few scenes could be re-done or upscaled.

I don’t think this is a task for Despecialized, since it would be about restoring a very specific version, which is only a curiosity for the most devout purists, so a 35mm preservation, if a print of this version was found, which would be 100% theatrically faithful, would be much better suited for this kind of task.

I dunno, but SPOILER ALERT:

We have a sighting of the four-eyed stormtrooper, the early years.

My God, so it is GOUT sourced after all!

Will 3.0 use 35mm scans for the vfx shots that were re-comp’d in the SE or is there too much of a discrepancy in quality from the blu-ray?

I’ve still never acquired a fan project simply out of my desire never to purchase the official blu-rays in order to watch one,* but once this 1080p version happens I might just need to get the saga on the cheap and spend the rest on three dual-layered dvd-r’s and/or a nice big usb stick.

*Between the Disney/Fox deal and everything else going on with the franchise these days, I’ve just been patiently waiting for it to happen for real. I mean, for crying out loud, they’re using clips from despecialized in EW videos now!

In v3.0, the recomped shots will be restored using 35mm for sure. In v2.5, the number of Despecialized shots will be more or less the same as in v2.0 but those using GOUT heavily will be replaced with 35mm based ones.

That reminds me, that I probably should have posted these here, since the shot I’m showing is from Empire:

Do you still believe that 2.5 will be out by the time Solo releases?

How much you wanna bet Harmy is doing Roto work on Solo?

I would doubt it, but that would be beyond awesome!

Exactly the same sentiment as above.
(Edit: And it still will be, even if the movie itself turns out to be less than appealing.)

Great clips! It’s very interesting to see the time, care & expertise that goes
into restoring just a few seconds of footage. I actually understood most of what
you were doing, but damn, you’ve got some cool toys! Worth the wait!

I thought I recognized your foul stench when I entered this forum!

I couldn’t agree more.

Hey all. I just got done downloading the Empire MKV via the multi-part RARs and JDownloader. I can enter the password and have it extract, but 7zip complains of a CRC error. Even so, the extraction process does generate an output file that I can play. I notice however that if I scrub around there seems to be intermittent navigation problems and frame rendering issues you typically see when there’s missing i/p frames.

I validated the checksum of my file against the one that’s listed online and, as expected, it differs.

Given that the file mostly plays I’m thinking that there’s probably one or two .rars in the set that were corrupted in some way.

I looked through some of the posts here and it sounds like other people might have had a similar problem.

Could any kind soul provide a .sfv file (or similar listing of hashes) that lists the checksum of the individual RARs rather than the entire MKV? That should let me (and maybe anyone else having a similar problem) determine which specific files are causing the problem and either re-download them or source them from elsewhere.

Thanks!

Hi LemonDangereux,

I’ve got a list of SHA-1 hashes of rar files for the ESB 2.0 MKV that extracted without error.

If you are using a PC, you can use this Checksum Compare Program to generate SHA-1 hashes of all your files if you haven’t already got them. Just make sure to select SHA-1, then select the same directory for both sides of the window. It will obviously say everything matches since you are comparing the directory to itself, but it’s a quick way to get a copy-able list of checksums of the files you have.

I will PM you my list of SHA-1 hashes.

You can then use the list comparing site “https://www.quickdiff.com/” to compare my list of hashes with yours. Any differences would mean there is something wrong with your copy of the file from which the erroneous hash was generated, and a fresh download of the file(s) in question will likely fix the problem.

Hope it helps!

Thanks a million, it definitely did. A check against your hashes revealed that 23 through 25 were out of sorts and a re-download found everything sorted. Greatly appreciate your help!

Any new developments as far as 2.5 is concerned? Thread’s been pretty quiet.

Although Poita’s new print is surely a ways off from being scanned and available, I think it would make sense to hold back a bit on this one. Especially with 4k77 available as a source to improve SW.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. The ESB print I have right now is very far from ideal and SW is the one that needs an improvement the most anyway, so I will probably put Empire on the back burner for now.
