Spider-Man: Homecoming

Meh. Better than the other Spider-Man movies, but only a little bit. I only watched it to catch up on the marvel movies before the next few movies.

4/10 I think. Maybe 5/10. Not terrible, just certainly not for me.

I didn’t think the first Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film was altogether horrible. But I haven’t seen a Spider-Man film since those three, since the third one turned me off of watching any more of them.

I like the first two Raimi Spidey films, the second less than the first. They’re far from perfect, but at least they resemble the Spideyverse I got to know in the comics. Everything since is funhouse mirror junk.

So it is terrible?

“Wonderstruck”

I liked the magical overtones. It was a little disjointed as it flashed between two parallel stories but I think it still worked fairly well as both stories were interesting and it heightened the magical feeling. The movie was somewhat undermined by questions about the motivations/choice of the adult characters that precipitated the boy’s journey. Some might insist that it doesn’t matter because it wasn’t the adults’ story or something. But those choices were integral to the story and you’re left wondering if you’ve been cheated. The actor who plays Riddler in “Gotham” has a small role and it was fun to see him being less creepy than usual.

7/10

Rush- Subtle as a sledgehammer but totally exhilarating sports drama from director Ron Howard about a real-life 1970s Formula One rivalry. Terrific performances all around, exciting supercharged racing sequences, and an smart, if not subtle screenplay from Peter Morgan. Special shout-out to cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, helping Howard shoot digital for the first time. Some spectacular camera work, and Morgan’s script teases out interesting ideas about celebrity, competition, desire, and obsession. Good stuff.

Yeah, I thought it was surprisingly good.

I still am under no obligation to like it.

You’re also under no obligation to steal Ric Olie’s thunder, and yet here you are.

If art is subjective, and I already said my opinion of the film was subjective, why then do you guys feel obligated to contradict me or say my preferences are in bad taste? Apparently having to defend my position is not a Captain Obvious move if people are telling me my initial reasoning is flawed.

But you gave nonsense reasons as to why you didn’t like it. Saying the movie is bad because you don’t know the name of a character for 20-something minutes is absurd.

They’re not nonsense to me, and you don’t have to agree, but I feel the reaction to my talking about it, (eg. saying my opinion is nonsense or absurd) is stronger in tone than is warranted. Maybe I did too easily take offense, I’ll admit that. But I don’t feel blame falls solely on my own shoulders.

Why are you playing the blame game? You shared your opinion. People thought that your reasoning made no sense and they clearly explained why. Then you get pissed off because people responded fairly cordially to something that you posted for us to read. And who are you to police tone? No one wrote anything even mildly offensive in their responses to you. Handman was right on in his assessment. Why post if you’ll just get angry when someone responds to you? If I posted that I hated Stand by Me because it had a narrator, a bully character that didn’t obey the traffic laws, and an ending that wasn’t entirely happy, then people would have reacted in the same way because I said I hated a beloved movie for reasons that make no sense.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - cool movie, had the potential to be the best Harry Potter franchise movie, but failed because of a confusing plot. I really liked the characters and the part of the story where they’re looking for the lost creatures in New York, and really liked the chemistry between the characters. Unfortunately I didn’t like the Obscurus part of the plot, and honestly it felt like it belonged in a completely different movie, given the huge tone discrepancy between it and the other subplots.

Edit: I liked how it portrayed the US as super conservative 😉

Blade Runner 2049
I had no interest in seeing this. I dig the original, but have no need or even want for a sequel. The Lady of the manor wanted to watch, and tonight was the night.
I had no faith at all in it and she had very little (She’s not quite as curmudgeonly as I).
Well, we loved it. Ain’t that a kick.

Hostiles (2017)

Really good film. Solid performances all around. It’s amazing that this is only this studio’s third film. Kudos to the writer/director.

Had a Christopher Nolan double feature of The Prestige and Interstellar this weekend. Now, The Prestige has been a favorite of mine since it came out, more on the strength of its tone, cast and production design than on it’s admittedly sort of preposterous story, but I was really knocked out by Interstellar, which I haven’t seen since its 2014 release. I get the sense that a lot of folks think it’s kind of middling Nolan, but after this viewing I really think it might be my favorite. It hits a lot of sweet spots for me.

Other than that, I watched A Hard Day’s Night while more than a little drunk on Friday, after listening to Ken Jennings talk about it on the Movie Crush podcast at work. I picked up the Criterion blu-ray of it a few months ago but hadn’t gotten to it yet. Sweet Christ is that ever a beautiful transfer.

As far as next movie seen goes, my local theater finally got The Shape of Water, so I’ll be going to see that in a couple hours.

I agree with you both and I was most put off by the generic action movie ending.

Aren’t all Harry Potter movies a bit cartoonish? Apart from that, I had the same impression of Fantastic Beasts.

I thought this was worse. Granted, haven’t seen the others in along time. Right from the beginning, not just the CG characters, but also the sets (like, PT-level). You couldn’t find a real, brick-lined street anywhere to film it?
