Childhood Misconceptions (aka The Trap Thread, but misconceptions still welcome) — Page 17

Until watching the Despecialized ANH two weeks ago for the first time in over 20 years, I was duped by the “Han Shot First” mythos. I had totally forgotten that ONLY Han shot and damn is it satisfying.

Han Shot. Period.

I thought the escape pod R2 and 3PO used was from the Star Destroyer not the blockade runner.

Hey, I thought this one too!

I thought a light saber was a life saver.

I didn’t realize Han put Luke inside a tautaun. I thought Han cut into the ground, and there was some weird warm layer underneath the ice on the planet. I thought it was weird, but it’s still what I though happened.

I thought that Leia was killed by the stormtrooper who shot her on the stun setting, but reanimated with advanced science (I was four mind you.)

I thought the escape pod R2 and 3PO used was from the Star Destroyer not the blockade runner.

Oh this is bad. I thought the escape pod was from the star destroyer up until this point. This is not a good sign for my developing brain.

Up until now you thought this? They flee into the escape pod in the middle of the firefight…on the Tantive. Why would it be from the Star Destroyer?

I used to think the big door of Jabba’s palace was meant to dock the Jawa Sandcrawler. Then I watched ROTJ again years later and realized the cave passage did not look big enough. So why the huge door?

Conspicuous consumption?

As a kid I thought a green lightsaber meant you were a Jedi Master, since Luke got one when he finished his training, and everyone who had one was a master (Yoda, Qui-Gon). It then occurred to me that Obi-Wan had a blue saber despite being a master. I assumed that was just an exception, but over the years, I noticed more masters with blue sabers and came to realize how meaningless the coloration was.

Honestly, I find it kind of dumb that they would give Jedi an alternate saber color without any real reason. It’s not like they decided Jedi could have any color saber. They specifically gave them blue and green. All colors, or just blue, and only Luke had green because he was more balanced than the Jedi, I could understand, but blue and green? Why? On top of that, the two BTS explanations I’ve heard provide pretty weak reasoning for Luke having green in RotJ; either they didn’t think audiences were smart enough to figure out that this was a new lightsaber and that they’d wonder how he got his old one back, or they thought blue didn’t contrast enough against the blue sky of Tatooine.

I thought that Luke chose green because he likes green.

No, he chose Air Superiority Blue because Air Superiority Blue is the superior lightsaber color.

I actually liked the green better.

I used to think the stormtroopers conversing after Ben shuts down the tractor beam said, “Do you know what’s going on?” “Maybe it’s another girl.” It was like Leia had already been a thorn in everyone’s side, now they thought some other female was also giving the male-dominated Death Star trouble.

That’s what I thought they were saying too.

A friend of mine thought the Stormtroopers on the Death Star were saying “we think they may be splitting up - they may on level 5 or 6 now Bert”. Never learned who this mysterious Bert was…

He also thought Vader said “and now your Highness we will discuss the location of your hidden little base…”

I thought he said “Grill”, as in they thought they were missing out on another company BBQ.
Ok, I didn’t think that as a kid.
I do now though.

Funnily enough, the line “Maybe it’s another drill.” was once translated on a TV showing Maybe it’s another

That version had completely ridicilous subs, the translator probably didn’t even see the movie.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

I always heard them say something about ‘Hot Gassing’.

Random memory glitch - for a while as a kid I remembered Vader and Ben duelling on a catwalk, like the one where the tractor beam control was.

I used to think that green saber = Jedi master too.

Edit: I’m still a child so do my problems with the saga still count

During the shootout immediately after reaching Leia from her cell in the Death Star, after Leia said, “When you came in here, didn’t you have a plan for getting out?” I thought Han followed with, “Need some brains, sweetheart.” Shortly after, I thought Leia said, “Somebody needs to save us kids.”

When I was really young, like 4-5, I was too afraid of ROTJ to even watch more than a few minutes at a time. As a result, I know I had a number of misconceptions. One was that I conflated Jabba with the rancor. I remember thinking when Jabba reached into the bowl to eat the frog, he was reaching for Oola to eat her!

I used to think the probe-droid in ESB kept saying “needing assistance” in the scene where Leia and C-3PO listens to the message/code it broadcasts to the Empire. It’s just electronic gibberish, but I still think it sounds kind if similar.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who heard it.

And it does kind of make sense as well.
