Yo, what if the dude doing the X0 project of the original trilogy did the same thing with THX-1138? That would be great.

To tell you the truth, for me there's a certain charm in seeing THX-1138 (even Star Wars for that matter) with all of it's filmic blemishes for me. I kind of like the scratches and dirt on film, I guess maybe I'm overly romantic.

Me too, but I like to see my filmic blemishes crystal clear with as little post-transfer compression artifacting and picture softening as possible!

Hence the XO transfer for THX 1138 being a great idea, IMHO.

Finally got my copy of The Frighteners LD Rip delivered. The quality is OK, having not watched a laserdisc in fifteen years I can't really compare it. Needless to say it looks quite grainy, certainly better than VHS though. There's a very basic menu (blue screen with a "Play Movie" button). It doesn't contain the commentary as I hoped it might. There's only 2 channel sound throughout whereas the official DVD (and I'm assuming the LD) has a 5.1 soundtrack. The 4.5 hour documentary which is supplied on a second disc again has the same issues with regard to the grain as the first disc does. Whilst I'm not complaining about the rip as it certainly is watchable, has anyone got (or can get) a better looking version?

Reading back through this thread it's only ReverendBeastly who has the commentary on VHS, could you rip the commentary from your VHS copies? And I'll mail you a copy of the movie, after which you merge the two together. Would this be possible?

Yes, that would be possible, and it's a project I'm already taking on from Garrett's (ocpmovie) DVDs. They're on their way to me and I plan to re-author the movie disc with the commentary as an alternate track.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Cool, I shall wait for news of this update. I'm assuming that I have the same set as Garrett's as his doesn't have the commentary either. Do you know where he got his?
Whilst searching for a decent cover for my set (the one I got with mine was shit) I found one for a 3 disc DVD set. Disc 1 was the movie with the commentary track, disc 2 is the 4 hour documentary and the third disc was deleted scenes, bloopers & trailers.

Are you planning to remaster the other extras? And what about the 5.1 audio track?

Cuz I'd kinda like as much of this movie as possible.

The deleted scenes, bloopers and trailers are included in the documentary. So in reality what that cover was for was one disc with the movie and the other two with the doc, which is how it should be split up. Where did you find that cover? Would it be possible to track down who posted it and bug them for a copy?

Also, I wouldn't be able to do the 5.1 sound without the original laserdisc.

Any word on that PAL version of Bladerunner Int. + Documentary yet Citizen? I'd love to score a copy.

Also... Who says Frighteners is not out on DVD? I saw it just last week at the store.

No one said it wasn't out on DVD, because it is. But not the special edition that was issued on laserdisc with 12mins of extra footage plus a 4.5hr documentary.

I just got a copy of the Frighteners set that Garrett sent me and I must say that I'm extremely disappointed. Both the movie and the documentary seem to be made in quite a ridiculous way. It seems that whoever made these already had the two items on seperate DVDs, but didn't have a DVD burner. Rather, the person had a DVD burning deck (that acts like a VCR). So what did this person do? Hooked up their DVD player to the recording deck and duped it that way. This is apparent by the simple menus that these decks often empoy and the fact that if you skip to the end of each piece, you'll see the original menu (again, a menu from a deck rather than an actually authored DVD). What's worse, the 4.5hr documentary is on this disc as 5hrs. Know what the last half hour is? The playback DVD player's screensaver. Cyberhome, by the look of it. Of course, after all this, the image quality is nowhere near what it should be. The blacks are darkish grey at best. The fact that this laserdisc set hasn't been preserved in the proper way is a goddamn shame. So this is what I propose:

A few of us pool our money and buy a copy of the laserdisc box set. Recently, a copy has sold on eBay for $165, which is not too bad at all. If perhaps four of us went in and split the cost, then sent the set to someone who could encode it properly (this board is full of 'em), we would have exactly what we're looking for. Reply if you're interested and if there's enough interest, I'll make some sort of a seperate discussion place where the specifics can be figured out. If not... well, then, I suppose I might just have to plop down the $200 and get this set.

I was about to say that we must have the same version, but I just thought I'd check to make sure, and as it turns out while my copy still has the shitty menus I don't have the screensaver running at the end of it. Is there any other way of finding out if we have two different versions? My God, that documentary disc is addictive. I only put it on to check the screensaver and ended up watching it for a half hour.

I totally agree with pooling our resources and purchasing a set, unfortunately having just lost my job & having no money currently coming in, I really can't see a way of helping to finance this project. That's not to say I wouldn't put up some cash when I have it. If you (or someone else) could buy the LD from Ebay and then I'd reimburse part of the cost when my situation is more stable.

I have a steady job right now that's pulling in some decent extra income, I'm thinking I may make the purchase when the opportunity presents itself. MeBeJedi has agreed to rip the LD for a modest price and make a DVD set, most likely 3 discs. He knows his stuff, so the transfer will be a damn good one.

I'm willing to bet that your discs are the ones these were dubbed from.

Below are the two menus of the discs themselves:

The Ever Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing did not develop his rock-like look until later in the comics. So the new movie may be keeping it closer to the early issues when Ben Grimm's features were slowly changing over time.

Can someone post that workprint of Blade Runner? Ive been longing to see that for a while, but the one chance I had to get it would have left me with a $50 VHS. Some time soon, I want to rip my Fight Club workprint VHS. IT totally destroys the release version. Way moodier and creepier.

I also have this and was going to make a DVD of it. Perhaps you can take a screencap of your copy and then I will take one of mine and we will compare quality to see which is superior?
