Puppet Yoda looked great! His very first shot seemed far more CGI though and looked bad.

Just discovered this site. What TLJ got right it got so right to me, but what it got wrong it got so wrong. Still, I thought the positives outweighed the negatives. I thought the movie was about 20-30 minutes too long to begin with and is just begging for a fan edit, here’s what I intend to do when I do mine:

  • Delete the cancer that is Maz Kanata. “We’re going to need a codebreaker…I think I know someone” Immediately cut to transmission fading out. Who were they talking to? Who cares!
  • “Fix” Canto Bight. Cut alien vomit. Sadly, can’t cut the joke about landing on public beach (are Finn and Rose stupid?) BDT unlocks cell. Reverse the shot of them following him out. Immediately cut to the ship. How did they get there and find BB-8? Who cares! I’m tempted to throw the whole thing out and just cut to BDT’s ship.
  • Cut the shot of the dancing caretakers. I want to get rid of everything involving the caretakers, but I think that’s the only one that can easily go (neither Luke nor Rey is in the shot). I’ll have to see what I can do about the falling rock.
  • Definitely cut the broom kid at the end. It almost seems like they want us to ax that part, the fanfare starts up with the falcon taking off and then we cut to the kid. What?

I think it’s simply to hard too remove a lot of the humor without seriously disrupting the flow of the film, so the jokes will have to stay.

My only other major gripe about the movie is that there is not enough Rey! I really hope the deleted scenes will show more training and that it will be possible to work them in without disrupting the flow too much.

Disney should really have their directors shoot two versions of these films: one for the kids and one for adults. That would fix a lot of the problems.

Solid list of cuts. I have a hard disagree on the humor. I will be cutting nearly all of it and I think it will be the easiest thing to cut for sure. After seeing the film again, I could tell how easy and seamless it would be to edit out basically every joke if I want to.

On that note, what were the best jokes worth keeping in people’s opinion? The one I can think of right now is “page turners, they were not”.

For the scene where the Raddus and the remainder of the resistance are being chased by the 1st order (when they are ultimately headed to Crait,) we as an audience need a reason why the 1st order doesn’t just send out ties to kill everyone, or jump to light speed themselves to get ahead of the resistance and kill them off. We also need more of a reason for Poe to be pissed at Holdo

I was thinking that the flight path of the ships needs to be encumbered by something truly dangerous. It cant be asteroids, (to similar Empire Strikes Back,) but perhaps black holes? If the region is kind of a dangerous black hole ridden briar patch with Crait hidden within, this would genuinely make their plan to “just” stay ahead of the 1st order make sense.

It might also make Leia receiving Han’s dice more poignant, because of the Kessel Run.

My current solution would be to change the crawl so that Snoke wants Leia alive. That way the safest route to capturing her would be to run the ship out of fuel.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

That’s good to hear and definitely something I will be looking for when I go see it again.

Why oh why did they make some of the decisions they made with this film? The good parts are so, so good. They deserve better.

NeverarGreat that is a much easier solution lol. I just thought black holes would be badass.

I wonder where that shot that was on the trailer of Rey running with the ignited lightsaber would fit. After 2 viewing I’m pretty sure it’s not in the movie.

This isn’t a bad idea. Though why would the TIEs target the bridge then if they knew Leia might be on it?

It would require some FX work, but instead of having having them chase the Resistance in real space, you could also have the Resistance jump from system to system. Each time they jump, the First Order eventually shows up again, guns blazing, forcing the Resistance to jump again. You could still have it be a race against the clock, they’ll still eventually run out of fuel, but the amount of fuel they start out with is different, and maybe this could solve some of the current issues with the chase.

Youre right! It isn’t in the final movie. Apparently there was a scene where the caretaker village was in flames, and Rey is running toward the village. Not sure why it was on fire, or if it was a part of some vision.

I think it was mentioned on here before, but I believe there will be at least one deleted Luke and Rey scene on the DVD. This may or may not be related to this scene, though. Either way, I think this scene will definitely be one people will want to reinsert into the film.

I wonder how much of the schlocky stuff was Disney breathing down Johnson’s neck. The serious stuff feels more in line with his work, but the flat jokes, the children and the animals…that all screams Disney.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Read what he’s said about the film, this doesn’t seem accurate at all.

I’m overjoyed it was puppet Yoda again! He looked different though for SURE. But that’s fine. He looks older. I don’t care.

The only huge thing I want to see edited is Luke’s saber during his projection scene changed from the blue Graflex (Anakin’s) to the green thin neck hilt he made for ROTJ. It would make so much more sense. If he was trying to get into Kylo’s head in that scene by appearing as he did when he last saw him (different clothes, darker/shorter beard/hair) then it stands to reason he’d be using his thin neck as well. My guess is it was just fan service for the audience to see Luke with the Graflex one last time. Unfortunately, everywhere I go I see people who were disappointed by that. So I think they missed the mark there.

Actually, I figured out that Luke wasn’t real in that scene very early on because I was specifically watching to see what saber he had. When I saw the Graflex I was super confused…and then it clicked. I was disappointed in that moment.

Disney/LFL’s portrayal of everything that has happened since late 2012 has been universally idyllic.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Rian Johnson isn’t LFL though. And we know about issues that have occurred on all the other sets (for various reasons). But Rian says that it was a smooth production and they let him do what he wanted to do (and he talks about wanting humor and animals and stuff like that specifically). Considering they had the film completely done three months before it was out (and then gave him free reign to a trilogy of his choosing), it’s hard to imagine there was much executive meddling.

He also looks way younger like in the flashback scenes. I noticed his dyed goatee right away so that was also a giveaway.

Yes, I was actually somewhat impressed that so many people were surprised when they realized he wasn’t truly there. To each their own.

It occurred to me that since we don’t see how Rey gets off the Supremacy it doesn’t really matter if we don’t see how Finn and Rose get off it, either, i.e., that it should be possible to cut Deus Ex BB-8 without interrupting the story too much.

I’ve also decided on scrapping all of Canto Bight. Transmission ends - > radar blip - > Finn, Rose, and BDT aboard the stolen ship.

Doing all of that should cut the film down by 30 minutes, which it should’ve been already.

I’m starting to think I’ll do one of the TFA too (I know there are some good ones out there) that minimizes Maz as much as possible and then combine it with the TLJ edit.

It’s a relief to think that these two movies are actually salvageable.

Could you specify more on the “transmission ends” and “radar blip” moment? I’m very curious what ways people have to remove Canto Bight entirely. My main gripe would be that we never see DJ introduced as a character.

Does it bother anyone else that they kept calling him a “code breaker” and never once used the word “slicer?”

Yeah messing with Canto Bight is so hard. Rose saving Finn at the end appears to come from out of nowhere without it; it’s less believable without seeing them spend more time together.

After Maz’s transmission - which I am definitely cutting - ends, I believe someone says something like “Right, we’re going to go to Canto Bight and look for the codebreaker wearing the blue flower lapel,” or whatever. The next scene concerning this plot is a radar blip on one of the screens on the bridge [Holdo: “what was that?” Officer: “It’s nothing”]. After that the next scene I will include from this plot will be the stolen ship. I realize that that’s not a great introduction to DJ, but for me at least, I think it solves the Canto Bight issue in the easiest way possible. We can assume that DJ was the codebreaker that they were looking for all along.

That’s not to say that it’s the best way to do it. I will definitely try to salvage the first introduction to DJ and and the escape from the cell if I can.
