TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released) — Page 54

Definitely works well!

Only issue is the quiet music starting 2:38, either 2:30-2:38 should be replaced with something quieter (or go unscored), or 2:39-2:48 should be replaced with something louder to keep the musical pace going.

Perhaps Hux’s “Fire!” should be made to sound a bit more like it is coming from a speaker? it sounds kind of silly coming out of the blue with so much clarity.

Here’s a tweaked version of Hux’s line with ‘Supreme Leader’:

With some reverb:

And yes, the Hux ‘Fire!’ should be filtered in some way.

Notes on that vid:

  • All of the audio in the Republic destruction sequence is lower than the surrounding scenes, the music especially.
  • I think the slowed down shots are a bit too obvious. What editor are you using? I know there are slow motion specific programs out there that create frames in between, if not that then Premiere has a pretty solid effect called Optical Flow that gets the job done better than one might imagine.
  • I think we need sound effects (quiet, muffled of course) in the Resistance base scenes and definitely in pilot reactions.
  • Agreed with Neverar on the red glow.
  • fish doesn’t have a bad point, the first part of the music in the Snoke scene could easily be replaced with the shorter sting from the film and FYC version of the cue (for reference: https://youtu.be/PoT-5Cfbfmw?t=2m40s)
  • I’m not sold on the new Hux lines, I don’t think the quality is quite there, and I’m not sure why a line for him is needed anyway, it unnecessarily extends a scene that, as I’ve said before, should, if anything, be trimmed down.
  • Besides the obvious of making that shot of Hux full size, I think a very slight camera shake might give it life. Failing that, it might be better to just kill it completely while still having the music start after Snoke’s line - you wouldn’t line up the music perfectly with how it is in the next scene anymore, but it might be worth it.

The reason for the Hux line is that destroying the Republic seems to be his driving motivation, at least judging from his impassioned speech earlier. It seems very strange for him to have just achieved this goal and let it pass unmarked. Also, destroying the seat of the galactic government is a footnote in the original version, and this edit can barely elevate the Republic to the status of subplot, so I’m trying to take every opportunity to make it so. 😉

Well I think the Republic is only part of it, the Resistance seems to be at least just as important (both times he mentions the Republic in the film he references them in relation to the Resistance).

If there’s a way to make it work, I’m with you, but at the moment it feels awkward and unnecessary.

The line sounds odd technically and the choice of words is peculiar (“swept aside”). I understand the reasoning that Hux would mention this to Snoke, but maybe it’s better to just assume this happened off screen or that Snoke found out in some other way. Snoke’s next line doesn’t make much sense in that context either. If this was news to Snoke he would have some sort of reaction to it and not just follow with “Then the Resistance must be destroyed …” which is a good follow up to the original “they have the map” but not really to “the Republic is gone”.

The thought behind my version is that it gives the short scene a logical narrative. Hux tells Snoke that they’ve tracked the Resistance and Snoke thinks that’s good and proposes that they fire on them.

I agree about the Snoke music, but understand the reasons against it. shrugs

I still think this is the simplest and cleanest way to do it. However, I love the music cue with the horns you did Ridley, great timing!

Well it does match Tarkin’s line about the senate in ANH 😉

Hux is Tarkin’s reincarnation, theory confirmed! 😉

I’ll remove Kylo from the first shot with Hux, of course. Thoughts on this?

I feel like this is pretty close to it! Probably the best I’ve seen so far.

I’ll have to watch fish’s when I get the chance.

I’ve sat quietly on the sidelines for the duration of this project, but I wanted to mention one quick thing that stood out to me in this clip.

I understand that we’re probably dealing with a significant lack of usable footage, but I think that the first of the two shots of Leia during the firing of SKB really takes away from the powerful second shot when she recoils from the pain of losing both Han and Hosnian Prime. I’d personally like the first shot I see of Leia after these two major events be the one where she is recoiling, that way it is clear that she is reacting to both Han and SKB and not just SKB. Hope that makes sense!

Makes sense. Just thought I’d throw it out there! I’m unbelievably psyched for the finished product!

I would love to sit here and provide praise and feedback about what poured in throughout the day, but suffice it to say for now that it seems the future of the Snoke scene ought to be in fishmanlee and Sir_Ridley talking to each other, using the scene order from Ridley and the music from fish. Really great output from you both.
V2 is going to really be something grand, the fulfillment of my thought upon completing V1: "I wish someone would come along and take this idea/material and make it better."
I will take another look at the Hosnian Prime destruction audio based on provided feedback, though may not be able to until Thursday. Again, I am hoping to be able to begin exporting sometime Friday, if there’s much hope to have it on people’s hard drives in time for pre-TLJ showings. I hope you all have reserved seating in the theater!

It’s quite possible I won’t be able to check in here at all tomorrow, so please proceed without me on the Snoke scene if you can; I don’t want to hold it up and trust the group we have going implicitly.
For tonight, my goal is to give the Hosnian sequence the additional TLC you guys have called for today.

I totally agree that such dialogue would be great to have there, but I don’t think the existing material to work with yield something worthy of inclusion. Such is fan editing. 😕

Although I’d prefer some acknowledgement from Hux about the Republic, I totally understand if it doesn’t make the cut. Onward!

I definitely feel your sentiment there Neverar! However I do agree with the others that currently there is no way to implement it that is seamless but I do wish there was more material on the Republic after it is destroyed.

I use frame blend on all of the slowed shots, since the Optical Flow produces really poor results in Premiere, at least for me.

It doesn’t always work, but I’ve had some pretty solid successes with it.

The other solution is to edit the music down so that we don’t need to fill so much time.
