TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released) — Page 53

I prefer the Snoke music to the other music tbh. I think it transitions into the next scene quite nicely and it doesn’t kill the momentum for me.

Fishmanlee has provided the LEGO TFA game sound effects, which includes quite a few new lines of dialogue by the characters. I decided to make another attempt at a Hux line, and it may be an improvement over the ‘wreckage’ line from before:

And the original audio combination:

JEDIT: Maybe the line should begin with a good old “Supreme Leader…”

BTW, Watched your Leia and the Starkiller 4 video, and while I miss the statement of the Han and Leia theme over the final shot of Leia that was originally her sensing Han’s death, I do like how it fades to silence and then snaps back into reality/action with Chewbacca’s roar, it reminds me of something from the Middle-Earth films or something.

And You’re Welcome! Maybe Frink will be able to find a use for them in TRA in 2049 😉

Hard disagree. We’ve just, in the last couple of minutes, seen the Starkiller destroy the Republic, and now we learn they’re turning on the Resistance. This is a big “dun dun” moment, not a place for the quiet, ambient, and mysterious Snoke music.

The bombastic music was written to weave through the lines about the damaged Oscillator. Putting that over the Snoke scene makes some parts difficult to understand over the music, since the quiet moments do not sync to the dialogue. This is what ultimately disqualifies it for me, even though it’s a better thematic match.

Maybe someone could try and weave the audio and video together in a way that they compliment each other.

Yeah, I mean in the final Snoke scene the music while it does have the choir and stuff is a little more loud and tense, so this scene should have something similar to that, not the earlier Snoke scenes.

Actually it’s not the best idea, but one could just reuse that same cue from the end of that scene (I believe it’s halfway through “The Abduction”). There are other moments in the score that could work too. Or an original composition would be cool!

The other thing is, it would not be hard to move the horn sting in the cue I suggested to right after Snoke says weapon, so you’re not stepping on his dialogue at all.

It’s hard to tell by just watching a 90 seconds portion of the scene. Maybe the full sequence (from Han’s death to Rey and Finn running into the woods) could give hindsight on what works better.
Snoke’s music:

  • Pros: the transition is perfect
  • Cons: there is no feeling given about what’s at stakes (Han killed, Republic destroyed, Resistance about to be).

This could work:

The other thing is, it would not be hard to move the horn sting in the cue I suggested to right after Snoke says weapon, so you’re not stepping on his dialogue at all.

This would address the only issue I have with the dramatic music added: the fact it drowns the dialogues.

You guys are giving me a lot to work on this morning! I won’t be able to edit further until Thursday morning, at which point I will need to begin exporting in order to have this out ahead of TLJ.

Ridley said the Maz’s Castle sequence is about to be uploaded, and I think at this point we are scrambling for the Snoke scene. That’s all that now remains!
I mean this sincerely and in a good way: this project is a collaboration through and through, and I will reflect whatever consensus is reached about this Snoke scene, be it an existing approach or something new.

Mala, if I am able to provide you a shit-video-quality version sometime Friday, do you think it’d be a quick job to sync subs for this in time? (Those could come later if need be.)

Yeah it can be done quickly (but Friday for you might be saturday for me, keep that in mind 😃). I’ll use the same files used for v1 (if anyone has noticed mistakes or so, tell me !). The tricky part is the new crawl in fact (if you send me in advance the first minutes of the edit containing the crawl it’s even better. EDIT: Ridley posted it, so no need to send it to me !) and the deleted scene (I can do that in advance as well).

Thank you! But I just noticed there’s an error in how the STAR WARS title fades out, I’ll get that fixed. I’m also working on a version of the Snoke scene which I’ll be able to show off soon.

Thanks ! But - stupid question… - how do I download them from vimeo ? 😃

edit: just to be sure ('cause I must admit I’m having a hard time understanding Carrie Fisher’s pronunciation of a few words in this scene) is the following transcript accurate ?

  • General, should we contact the Republic?

  • Immediately. Our future may depend on it.

  • I need you to go see the Senate right away. Tell them I insist the Republic takes [does she prononce the “s” ?] action against the [or “this” ?] First Order.

  • With respect, will the Republic listen?

  • Not all the Senators think I’m insane [“not all te Senators have gone insane” ?]. Or maybe they do? I don’t care.

Yeah, no kidding.
And I think for the Leia scene, it’s “Tell them I insist the Republic take action against the First Order,” and “Not all the senators think I’m insane.”

I’ll await the corrected crawl, and look forward to what I’m certain will be a wonderful Snoke scene. I’ll upload my best attempt based on what I’ve got at this point in a few minutes before dashing off to work for the day.

Nice to see it coming together!

Some notes:

  • I can still hear a bit of the old theme during Han’s Death.
  • Poe’s look at the weapon firing could use a lot more red color correction.
  • It would be good if the sound of the exploding planet could be extended to fade into the shot of Leia.
  • Hux’s first line could definitely use a ‘Supreme Leader’ before it, perhaps beginning from the previous shot of the Oscillator.
  • I’m sure the final shot of Hux won’t be so small going forward 😉

Wow, its really coming together nicely.

Essentially polishing up the Snoke scene and it’s looking really good. It has a great flow to it and is an improvement. Heck, now with Leia reacting after Han’s death AND the republic with those multiple planets … harkens back to Obi-Wan with Alderaan’s distraction. Really nice.
