I don’t hate CGI but there’s been two decades of crappy stuff that doens’t fool the eye for very long. I don’t think CGI spaceships impressed me until the 2009 Star Trek film. And bad CGI still happens. Justice League allegedly being the latest example of when a human in a suit might have been better.

I agree, I think that a lot of movies from the 90s and 00s have aged so much quicker and more poorly than stuff from the 80s and earlier, and it really is down to CGI. Bad practical effects are so much easier to look at than bad CGI (see The Evil Dead for poor but charming practical effects, and Ash vs Evil Dead for poor, hideous looking CGI). It’s the same with 3D animation. I can watch Snow White which is from almost a century ago, and it still looks good, but Toy Story which has some of the best 3D animation for the time, is still obviously dated.

Not enough people read the EU.

I’d be surprised if Pixar hasn’t toyed with the idea of re-rendering the film with modern software.

Didn’t they already do that in 2009 for the 3d remaster?. I know they had to re render it all with a extra tweaked camera in each scene for the 3d but I don’t think they updated the look of anything beyond that.

That moose. I’ll never forget that moose.

I’m referring to Ash vs Evil Dead. In one of the episodes of the first season, they showed a CG moose. It was absolutely abysmal.

Ah, gotcha. Universal had a maze based on AVED at Halloween Horror Nights this year, but there seemed to be more elements of the movies in there. Some of the Deadites got me good. My second favorite maze after The Shining.

Disney seems bent on remaking everything except Song Of The South at this point. I would be up for a new version of The Black Cauldron though.

I second the motion for a new version of The Black Cauldron.

I’d be up for a live-action remake of The Black Cauldron if it were as R-rated as the original cut of the animated version was rumoured to be.

Just watched The Force Awakens for the first time in about a year.

I still liked it.

Very engaging, great score and tone. The only things that bothered me was some (not all! But some) of the humor, and Kylo rens temper tantrums. The former could very easily have the worst of it edited out with the best attempts left in and it would work I think, the latter I would probably have to just live with since it happens in vital scenes and is too integrated into the fabric of the scene.

Overall I’d have to say it’s a 7/10, but the 70% that I do enjoy I enjoy a lot.

Curious what humor you didn’t like.

Also I like Kylo’s “temper tantrums” (if you insist on calling them that). Between that and his conflicted feelings, he’s a more humanized villain than we often get to see.

I suppose I don’t “insist” on calling them that, but I could do without him destroying his computers when he doesn’t get his way.

I’m not really sure about the humor. I don’t know if I disliked the humor itself or just didn’t like the placement.

Some examples of humor I didn’t like:

“Obviously. I’m with the resistance yeah. I’m with the resistance. This is what we look like. Some of us look different.”

“I bypassed the compressor!” (Not really humor but I always disliked that line for some reason)

Han and Rey finishing each other’s sentences on the falcon early on seemed cheesy to me.

“I’ll talk my way out of it. Yes I do, every time!”

“When has that ever helped? And don’t say the death star”.

“Is there a garbage shoot? Trash compactor?”

A couple other examples I’ve forgotten now. Mostly had to do with it throwing off the tone for me than the humor itself. But some of the humor I did like. I like bb8s thumbs up, and while a lot of people disliked fins “you gotta boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?” line I actually liked it. I liked most of fins humor actually just a couple instances I thought it was too much.

Personal choice obviously but I loved pretty much all of those examples. Finn’s in particular make me laugh every time.

I liked all of those, but didn’t like Finn’s boyfriend line. On the other hand, I really like Maz’s boyfriend joke, so I guess it balances out.

“I like that Wookiee.” Another great one.

Yeah, the only jokes in TFA that I didn’t like we’re “You got a boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?”, “Droid, please!”, and the trash compactor bit.

There might be more that just didn’t land with me, but these were the only ones that made me cringe.

And I also loved Kylo’s “temper tantrums.” I think they’re pretty essential to his character too. I think (as a general rule) most people who took issue with them were set their expectations of what kind of villain Kylo would be, and his instability as shown in the film were at odds with those expectations.

Like many little things in TFA, I think the “tantrum” thing will be less of an issue in retrospect after TLJ and/or IX come out and we get a clearer picture of Kylo’s character arc.

I really like “You Got a boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?” It’s the only line I remember. It was kinda funny and it felt real and that’s something Star Wars dialog has been missing for a long time. A long time.
There were some “jokes” that had me rolling my eyes. I don’t remember them though.

I liked the boyfriend line, and Maz. I think it was more just that some of it disrupted the tone for me. The “i’m with the resistance, this is what we look like” being the worst for me. But there were plenty of other examples of humor from fin that did work for me, so it’s not that I just don’t like the character or anything like that.

Shin Godzilla

Didn’t go as far into Evangelion-esque craziness or intensity as I was expecting or hoping, but it was a good deal more disturbing than most Godzilla films, which is a good thing. Loved the commentary on political red tape, loved that Godzilla evolves as he grows, loved that he emits massive amounts of radiation by simply existing…

…didn’t really love the ending. Was hoping for more of a final rampage than what was there.

Here’s hoping they do make a sequel in 2020, I’d love to see this Godzilla take on another Kaiju.

A gloomy, cold Sunday with nothing better to do than watch a box set is what happened to me today. So now it’s time for another Mark’s Down On Your Syntax wall of text review post! Yay!

A Nightmare On Elm Street - It’s cheap and flimsy-looking today but it’s got so much good stuff going on, a classic as far as I’m concerned - 5 marshmallow staircases out of 5.

Part 2, Freddy’s Revenge - It’s as daft as a brush and sometimes doesn’t stick to its own rules but it’s fun enough and gets an extra point for all that gorgeous subtext - 3 possibly-gay-teens out of 5.

Part 3, Dream Warriors - Best storyline in the series and some of my favourite effects work too. Also it has a young, buff Larry Fishburne… if you’re into that (I’m into that.) - 4 tall, wide-shouldered black men out of 5.

Part 4, The Dream Master - As much as there is to like, there’s just as much to dislike. But somebody gets turned into a bug and then squashed in a trap so it’s hard to come away unhappy - 3.3 HE-directed-this-'s?! out of 5.

Part 5, The Dream Child - Ironically, I fell asleep half an hour in. I was not murdered, however, and upon waking I rewound the blu-ray and resumed watching this poorly stitched together series of good ideas. I give it 1.5 Ah Ha music video rip-offs out of 5.

Part 6, Freddy’s Dead - Way more bonkers and daring than it gets credit for, if you’ve never seen it or it’s been a while give it a watch and you might find yourself enjoying it. I give it 3.5 Freddy’s Dads out of 5.

Wes Craven’s New Nightmare - It’s got some pacing problems which I can’t quite put my finger on but it’s a clever, deft piece of self-referential moviemaking that deserves attention from more than just horror fans. Don’t like Freddy’s new look though - 4 terrifying playground climbing frames out of 5.

Freddy versus Jason - Everything and the kitchen sink thrown at you whether you want it or not. Barmy story, beautifully ghastly kills, great practical effects (and some cgi which hasn’t aged too badly) and overacting of THE HIGHEST calibre. Monica Keena’s performance in the scene in the high school corridor about half an hour in is a thing of pure beauty. Absolutely, ironically and seriously my favourite of the lot - 5 seemingly inappropriate Chinese directors who turned out to be awesome out of 5.

I didn’t watch the remake with Rooney Mara because I don’t own it.

I like Freddy’s fleshed-out backstory (naff dream demons aside). Beyond that, though, Freddy’s Dead joins 4, 5, & FvJ in my personal trash pile.
