Firefox Quantum

Mozilla just released the latest version (v57) of their Firefox web browser, which they call Firefox Quantum. It’s supposed to be lightning fast and easy on memory.

Have you used it? What are your thoughts?

Installed it yesterday. Seems to work good so far. The last version I was running (56 something) was constantly choking on Ebay and Facebook. Even closing those tabs didn’t stop the freeze ups. It was becoming a major headache.

The default button placements need tweaking. Keep looking in the wrong place for certain things and the Bookmarks button wasn’t even visible until you customize things.

Some of my old add ons are playing catch up to get new compatible versions available.

i looks different enough to annoy me, and hangs all the time (already tried running in safe mode, and using the ‘refresh’ feature, and problems remain).

I am just getting old enough that i don’t like it when my browser’s stop working. Could care less about new features right now.

The sweeping dot thing in the tabs makes me uneasy for some reason. 😉

It’s incredible. I dunno how people are having issues!

Memory leaks. If I run Firefox for too long, a single blank tab will eat up 2 gigs of RAM.

I had no troubles with the earlier version and have no troubles now, but I still need to get used to the new look. I don’t quite like how pointy the corners of the tabs are.

Yeah, I felt like they’ve really addressed that with this update. The footprint is so much nicer now.

In my case.

So I downloaded this on my Mac just recently. I loaded twelve tabs of mostly Wikipedia articles mixed in with some other stuff in both Firefox and Safari Technology Preview. As soon as all pages were loaded, Firefox was using 328.9 MB of memory, while Safari was using only 110 MB. However, Firefox was using about twelve times as much energy as Safari, according to Activity Monitor’s energy tracking feature. Firefox’s memory usage has held steady for close to ten minutes.

^Interesting you mention that. I had a feeling my battery was draining a little faster than normal (it’s on its last legs so it goes fast anyway). Glad to know it’s not entirely my imagination.

My impression so far is that it’s great on my Windows 10 box and I’ll probably use it there (happy to have a good alternative to Chrome), but it’s a bit of a dog on my MacBook Pro. High energy usage as already mentioned by others and not-so-great performance overall (somewhat choppy scrolling, laggy UI). Probably sticking with Safari for now.

Can’t stand Safari but I use quite a lot of add-ons with Firefox anyway. Seems to run smooth though on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Don’t know if I can blame this on Quantum, but I haven’t been able to log into my gmail account since this morning. It just won’t go past the account selection screen.

JEDIT:Nevermind. NoScript is being paranoid.
