There’s probably a bizarre and confusing story behind the film, because I once rented it thinking it was the JTTCOTE remake with Emo Phillips and FX by some Star Wars alumni I had read about in Starlog years before, and it abruptly left turns into Alien From L.A. part II. Even more maddening is a creature from the Emo version is on the DVD cover but not in this cobbled together mess.
The film would be even more confusing to anyone who never saw AFLA. I presume Cannon films inexplicably had everyone except Kathy Ireland under contract for a sequel.

Hmm, never heard of these movies. I may have to check them out. Watching both trailers made me think of the live action Super Mario Bros. movie.

There’s a reason “The Descent, Part 3” doesn’t exist and that’s because “The Descent, Part 2” (2009) does, and we should be thankful for that if nothing else.

I was warned in this very thread not to watch this one but the blu ray was only £2.98 and that’s cheaper than renting it. It was a win/win as far as I was concerned but I’ll be donating this to my local charity shop on Monday.

The first Descent barely put a foot wrong, but for everything it did right, this one does it wrong. Considering the original has (no word of a lie) one of the best jump scares in movie history the profound mishandling and overuse of the jump scares here is baffling. The sets in the original never felt anything other than real (and were all the more terrifying for it) but here they are obviously sets and what atmosphere there is suffers for it.

All the original main cast return in one way or another but I can’t help thinking this would’ve been better if it had no connection with the original except for the creatures. Oh, and if you want to see how absolutely, positively NOT to do a twist ending, look no further.

Throw this movie into the deepest darkest cave you can find and hope it gets eaten by something scary. I give it a generous 0.5 out of 5 (and that’s only because it seems like they were trying their best to make a good film.)

"Justice League" (2017)

I had the entire cinema to myself which made this movie all the more enjoyable. It deftly ties together a lot of characters and plot points and gently introduces several new ones. The music is great, incorporating the best of what’s come before (including a couple of cues from a long way back.)

The plot is the usual old nonsense - big angry dude wants to end the world - but the point seems to be about showing us everybody’s reaction to what’s going on. All the main characters get at least one great moment and the secondary characters get handled well enough to make me interested in seeing them again.

There’s humour, action, heart and a lot of fun in this movie. It’s short by modern standards too, but it clipped along at a nice pace that didn’t feel rushed to me.

Steppenwolf could easily have been played by a human being in prosthetics and he lost a great deal of personality due to the CGI rendering. It was good enough in parts, but it’s going to age quickly - and badly.

On the whole, it was tremendous fun. Do stay until the very, very end of the credits too, it’s worth the wait!

I give it 4 pitchforks out of 5.

I’ve never understood how anyone can sit through this entire series at once. The first part is okay, although even that is marred by awful and distracting flashbacks, but the second part is almost unwatchable. If Tim Curry weren’t in this, I don’t think anyone would even remember it.

I just listened to We Hate Movies’ episode on It.

Yup.
At least the original clown looks scary though. The new one does not. Clowns are scary because it’s a grown person going over the top to look “fun for kids!”. The new one is trying to look creepy. It don’t work that way with clowns.

He looks a lot less creepy but his actions are a lot more unsettling than Tim Curry’s. As much as I love his performance, Tim Curry is genuinely quite funny and amusing in parts of the miniseries. I thought the new clown costume looked pretty good particularly in the broad daylight scenes and the Niebolt house in the remake though. The promotional images didn’t do him justice. I still prefer the Curry costume overall though.

Yeah I don’t like the face makeup, although without spoiling it there’s a neat effect in the movie that works in the lipstick design.

To be fair to the remake though, other than in the very first chapter, Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the book was never approachable and always obviously evil to the extreme.

Watched it over two days, actually.

I don’t find it unwatchable, but yeah, it is pretty damn weak in comparison.

If Tim Curry weren’t in this, I don’t think anyone would even remember it.

Nope, not at all. Without him, you’re left with three hours of poor direction and unintentionally funny “scares” and dialogue.

But, to me, that’s what normal clown make up represents!
Someone wearing “scary” clown make-up is much more approachable because it’s obviously just a gimmick to freak people out or an outward sign that you like terrible music.
Someone wearing real clown make-up… forget it. That’s an evil sumbitch and I won’t even walk that direction.

Justice League:

Having never seen any of the other DCEU movies save Wonder Woman, I expected a dumpster fire and got a movie that was just competent enough to be boring. The Flash was the only bright spot in the movie, everyone else either looked embarrassed to be there or was a pale imitation of a previous incarnation of the character.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

My sister is both a Marvel and Waititi fan so she dragged me to Ragnarok.
It’s not a bad picture but just like all the others in this seemingly unending cycle seems to exist only to overwhelm audiences with mere glimmers of life amidst the same frameworks time and time again. And with each pass the framework becomes weaker and weaker.

Apparently they based this around the idea behind the Planet Hulk storyline but the real problem is that you essentially have two movies not glued together but simply chopped in tatters and forcibly attached. The film continually stops again and again for the sake of the other plot line, or a joke or simply for a trailer moment. It never truly is allowed to build up its own steam and achieve any significance that will allow it to last longer than five minutes in the head of anyone who sees it.

It also gave me an insanely passionate desire to watch Flash Gordon with my receiver set to maximum. At the very least that film knows and admits what it is. Ragnarok cannot and will not do this.

Ultimately Ragnarok is yet another time passer that seems to swallow whole the creative person they plucked to be in charge.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a much better film btw.

Blade Runner: DC Laserdisc

I’ve been watching BR again and again trying to forget 2049. I still sadly haven’t forgotten it. However I did notice that there are some mixing differences between the international and director’s cut! (Mainly dynamic range, EQ, and the ability to hear many more details in the DC mix.)

Saving Private Ryan
I’ve never been a big fan of this at all but figured it had been long enough and had recently found the rare LD version.
It’s really quite a dull picture outside of the battle sequences.
2 balls out of four.

The Fifth Element
I always forget how enjoyable this film is, remember when watching it, and am then reminded at just how unfulfilling the story and setting winds up becoming.
I’ve made my peace with this film and enjoy it for what it is-yet can’t help but feel as if it were short of greatness.
The Pioneer rot free LD pressing is a reference disc for the format with a good ac3 track.
3.5 balls out of 4.
