I did go through every page up until page 72. Maybe I missed it? Thanks for sharing (again?), anyway 😃

JEDIT: found it! 😃

Glad to see I’m fairly consistent.

Sure, but saying that one prequel was more disappointing than another seems a little strange to me. For some reason I’ve started to think of the PT a single entity rather than three individually released films. I don’t think of the OT that way.

ROTS at the very least has things happening during most of it. AOTC is one of the most boring films I’ve ever seen. All the PT is pretty boring to me, but AOTC more than any of them.

I guess I’m just weirdly in the minority of “regular posters” here that legitimately enjoy fanedits of the prequels. Octoroxs edits of the first two and Hals ROTS, while not the artistic masterpieces of ANH and ESB, are to me very enjoyable popcorn flicks. They are definitely prequels, so the ot is where the real magic is, but I can at least have fun and enjoy the ride getting to where the real magic is.

“This is where the fun begins”.

Although there are some moments in ROTS that actually resonate with me on an emotional level and actually feel very powerful and almost get me shook up. But to be fair these are mostly to the credit of John Williams. This one actual feels emotional to me. But then again I’m so used to edits I barely remember the original. Also while Obi-Wans character in the prequels leaves some to be desired, but as an actor Ewan McGregor did a great job.

TLDR I’ll give 2 lists, one including fanedits of the pt and one with the originals.

No fanedits:

  1. ANH
  2. ESB
  3. TFA
  4. ROTJ
  5. R1
  6. ROTS
  7. AOTC
  8. TPM

Including fanedits:

  1. ANH
  2. ESB
  3. TFA
  4. ROTS
  5. TPM
  6. ROTJ (although if I ever finish my conservative edit of ROTJ that just trims annoying things like a simple prequel edit this will be higher. I should have finished it years ago but I have a hard time staying dedicated to it and I always start over when I come back)
  7. R1
  8. AOTC which in Octorox edit I still legitimately enjoy.

When we can finally all agree on how much of a failure ROTS was, it will truly be a beautiful day.

Star Wars fans? Agree on something? Ha!

Can we all agree that we can’t wait to see The Last Jedi?!

I doubt I go see it.

If I were someone that didn’t enjoy TFA… I don’t know why I’d be excited about TLJ.

Exactly.
(to clarify for the touchy ones, I got no problem with anybody who likes TFA and I hope TLJ is everything you hope for)

You could almost say, it’s ‘a new hope’…actually that’s more true of TFA 😉

It’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan. Just two years ago, my list would’ve only included three films. Now it has five!

  1. Star Wars (tie)
  2. The Empire Strikes Back (tie)
  3. Rogue One
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. Return of the Jedi

My rankings are a mixture of how much I personally enjoy each film combined with how good it is on a more objective, critical level. But mostly it’s just how much I enjoy them.

It’s funny, I used to be a die hard “ESB is the best ever, bar none!” kinda guy. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve really come to appreciate the true, unbridled greatness of the original film (it was always my second place anyway). And I’m now at a point where I just honestly can’t decide which one I prefer. I love them both.

Also, Rogue One has moved up the list with repeat viewings. I really liked it from day one, but I initially felt the characters were bland and held it back. Whereas TFA’s biggest strength is its great characters. So initially I had those swapped. But on repeat viewings Rogue One’s issues melted into the background whereas the problems with story in TFA become more glaring. Even so, I’m amazed that there are now TWO new Star Wars movies that I rank higher tha ROTJ. After the prequels I figured there’d never be a new Star Wars movie I liked.

But rankings aside, I love all five movies. Even ROTJ, easily the weakest of the bunch overall, has a rip-roaring (if not totally logical) opening act and has a wonderful third act that feels like the perfect end to the OT (and served as a template for how to edit the third act of R1…)

I think the only thing we can all agree on is that the original cut of Star Wars is a fantastic movie.
And if you don’t agree with that, I am wondering, why are you here?

Which one you prefer says a lot about how much of a Star Wars fan you are vs simply liking good movies.

You know, I never thought of it that way, but you’re probably right.

Well I don’t know what it says about me because I’m constantly changing my mind on which I like better.

I guess you always drive in the middle lane.

That’s where you’re supposed to drive. Left lane’s for passin’. Right lane is for exiting off of or merging onto the highway. Middle lane is for normal traffic. If you’re doin’ it differently, you’re doin’ it wrong.
(and if you’re doin’ it wrong, you’re a part of the larger group of drivers.)

It means you’re a fake fan. You probably like those sh***y Disney rehashes too.

Interesting. I always thought of it the other way around. The craftsmanship, prowess, and utter cinematic beauty of the Empire Strikes Back and all it’s moving parts is what reminds me what makes a movie timeless.

And the first Star Wars is the perfect encapsulation of the fun, adventure, and pure thrill of following your hero in a classic journey through an amazing world of strange new creatures. It is obviously the most “Star Warsy” of the bunch, whereas Empire Strikes Back is more transcendent.

Thanks for the great distinction though between the two. I’ve never heard it put that way.

I think a lot of people see the greatness achieved by Empire and forget that it stood on the shoulders of Star Wars. Sometimes even I forget, until thinking back on it or perhaps reading The Making of Star Wars. Every single decision that Lucas made, from the precise blend of hundreds of pop culture inspirations to the (at the time) unique used-universe aesthetic to the dramatic documentary style of cinematography to the dynamic archetypal characters to the unsurpassed level of design in the production to the classic score - hundreds of decisions like these had to go into making this movie, and none of them were guaranteed to work.

What I’m trying to say here is that the ability to even craft a working Yoda is insignificant next to the original conception of the Force.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I don’t think it being more mature necessarily makes it the better film (though, to be clear, it certainly doesn’t make it worse).

Anyway, there might be a slight distinction between movie fans and cinema fans. If so, Star Wars is definitely for the latter.

And I also tend to think Empire is the more Star Warsy of the two. The original defined the series, but Empire redefined it in a way it’s been following ever since.
