How about THX 1138 (original version)? I'm surprised I haven't heard that mentioned yet.

I've got a copy on my HD spread out over two CD-sized .avi files. It's passable. But I think that one's worth doing a really nice LD transfer job on...

I personally would love to see all of that Frighteners content on a DVD or 2. Thanks for the info link, Silverwook.

Also, does anybody know if the Blues Brothers LD has more content than is available on the DVD?

I think it's the other way around actually. The dvd had more footage put back into the film.

Ah okay. I just read about both of them containing footage from the preview screening. Apparently (done some more reading now), the DVD is the most complete that we'll ever see as Universal got rid of the archival footage some years ago. The sourced as much material as they could - but footage that featured in the preview (including a whole song performance) that's now gone, shall not be seen again.

I would love to see DVD versions of Meet the Feebles and Braindead sense were mentioning The Frighteners.

I wonder is anyone has thought of editing all the Evil Dead movies into one long movie?

That would be a hell of a long DVD.

Maybe we can do the same with LOTR Extended Editions.

not really because your cutting about 15 minutes out of evil dead 2 and another 5 out of army of darness. OK so that's like 20 minutes. The first movie is around an hour and 20 plus the hour or so of evil dead2 (after cuts) and another hour and 25 for army of darkness.

Your looking at around 3 hours and 45 minutes

Not too long...

I've got a copy of Braindead on DVD, looking real nice, too. I've also thought about editing the ED movies together, but I never do. I just watch them all against each other, skipping the redundant parts in between. Pretty much the same thing.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

There was a Drunken Master 2 LDrip DVDR on a torrent site somewhere awhile back. Only place to get that in its original aspect ratio.

I've been praying for LD rips for First Strike, Rumble, Thunderbolt etc. Jet Li's Fist of Legend LD is the only place to get the original cut and original sountrack aside from the french DVD with burned in French subs. I've heard stories about the Japanese LD of Police Story 2 with extra scenes.

I wish the studios would release these correctly, but oh well. My only recourse is that I have a few of these LDs on VHS copy, of which are slowly dying.

I have Song of the South on dvd taken from a Hong Kong LD.

Is that the one in english with foreign language subs during the songs? I have a divx of that, wouldn't mind it in dvd if quality of transfer is good.

I too would like to see a CGI-less THX 1138.

Much of Hong Kong cinema I end up getting DVDs from Hong Kong itself (such as HiViZone.com). Region encoding is no problem these days to defeat and many HK DVDs aren't encoded anyways. Are there problems with the actual Hong Kong DVDs regarding aspect ratios etc?

Disney's been releasing some of their more "controversial" cartoons in their Walt Disney Treasures series, with an annoying Leonard Maltin disclaimer, but they are there nonetheless. That's how "Education for Death" and other previously unreleased cartoons got out. I imagine Song of the South will eventually follow with a similar annoying disclaimer, the demand is too big for Disney to ignore.

Since a great deal of HK flicks (mostly special und ultimate editions) go directly to europe (germany to be specific) I haven't seen a code 0 disc for many years

But of course we all have our regioncode free players

For most recent movies and new releases there really is no problem at all. The problem lies within most of the older Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies that Harvey and Miramax bought the rights to. As many know these many of these movies were released in the theatres cut and edited with new soundtracks and such. Miramax still holds the rights to a lot of these movies and on some, worldwide distrubution rights and have only released their "butchered" versions. Here's some examples off the top of my head:

Drunken Master 2: Miramax cut the ending where Jackie gets retarded and changed the score. There is an OOP DVD by Thrakral that has the original soundtrack and is uncut but the aspect ratio is wrong. Only the Mei-Ah LD or VCD has the original aspect ration and uncut.

Fist of Legend: Miramax edited and changed score. There is an uncut/original score DVD by Ritek but it is dubbed over in Mandarin. There is a French DVD that is uncut/orginal score/language but has no English subs and has French subs burned into the screen. The Mei-Ah LD and VCD once again have the only "orginal versions"

First Strike: Cut and edited for American release. There is an uncut/original score DVD but it is dubbed over in Mandarin. Mei-AH LD/VCD is the only orginal version that has all the characters speaking their original languages (Russian, English, Mand/Cantonese) and the underwater fight is uncut among other scenes.

Mr. Nice Guy: Different shorter cut from the HK theatre release version, but being filmed in English the soundtrack is ok. HK version of this movie is dubbed in Canto or Mand. There is no uncut version featuring the original english dub anywhere.

Thunderbolt: I'm not even sure what name this was released in home video here, but I hear the soundtrack is different and cut a little.
There once again is an uncut Mandarin dubbed DVD version. Mei-AH LD is the only true uncut/original score/language version.

Rumble in the Bronx: Miramax cut/dubbed version released in US theatres and DVD. Japanese LD by Towa is uncut/original score but no english subtites amd wrong aspect ratio. HK LD by Star Ent. is uncut/language/score/aspect ration with no English subs and apparently the encoding is pretty crappy with lots of pixels. So no true complete version of this movie.

Those are the main culprits that people really seem to want a new release of, and of now we can only pray. Here's a few other tidbits:

Armor of God 2(Operation Condor): cut and different soundtrack in US version. Supposedly IVL/Fortune Star has a newly remastered uncut version coming soon, as the uncut Mei-Ah LD had no subs, and there was a subpar DVD already released in HK.

Who Am I: cut a bit for the US. The original HK DVD was ok but apparently the DVD was rereleased in HK and has the wrong aspect ratio for whatever reason.

Dragons Forever: a lot of the HK releases are missing a couple scenes. The english dub has these scenes but are missing others. I hear Hong Kong Legends plans to rerelease this soon however.

This is all I can think of right now, if anything is wrong I apologize. I'm not up to date on all the PAL releases and what HKL is current doing but they can't release the Miramax ones anyway. I'm getting sad as my VHS LD copy of Fist of Legend is starting to show wear heh.

I think you're wrong about there being burned in subtitles on the Fist of Legend dvd. I think all there is is forced subtitles when you choose English audio. Either way, it's no use to us who don't speak French, but theoretically, someone could copy the dvd and make their own subtitles. I've actually seen this done, but it was sadly only as a divx.

Regarding Thunderbolt; There are both a Scandinavian and a Spanish dvd of the uncut version of this film. The Scandinavian version does not carry any English subs, but surprisingly the Spanish one does. They're both undubbed.

I believe TR 47 offers the original version of thx 1138 from laserdisc source on dvd as a bonus, when buying his star wars set. He does not sell it separetely, also I think ocpmovie also has it. Maybe Rikter does too?
