I did another version of the Resistance Briefing scene, further tweaking Leia’s mouth movements (as usual) and giving 3PO this line: “Oh my! Without the Republic fleet, they’re doomed!”

How do you go about changing mouth movements?

I usually use a feathered crop to isolate the mouth, then bring it backward or forward in the shot to match the words. This requires keyframing it to match the position of the face pretty precisely, so it was really tricky in the shot where Leia was walking toward the camera. One of the tricks I’ve learned is that audio trails video by a frame or two in our mental processing, which means that the mouth should close a frame or two before the last word ends.

Interesting! I figured it was something like that, thanks. Seems to work well.

The one awkward thing there that stands out for me is the re-editing of the Kor Sella scene. Any particular reason for that?

The original editing of the scene had Kor Sella smiling in reaction to Leia’s line ‘Not all the senators think I’m insane’. While that may be a humorous exaggeration, it doesn’t seem like a joke. After her reaction, Leia then says ‘…or maybe they do. I don’t care.’. This seems like the punchline to me, which is why I put her reaction here. It also gives the scene some room to breathe, otherwise it would cut too fast back to Finn and Poe. Of course, this change meant that I had to find some other reaction shot of Kor Sella to place between Leia’s lines, so I took the only moment where she wasn’t talking and slowed it down as much as I dared.

Okay, I get that, but I respectfully think it works much better unaltered. While I like the idea of giving the scene more breathing room, the best way that would have been done would have been to add more dialogue, though obviously that’s not a possibility. As is, extending the pace of the scene just feels artificial and awkward. Also, Sella’s first reaction shot is strange, and the second is obviously slowed down.

I get what you mean about the laughing reaction, but I don’t think there’s anything weird about Sella laughing at “not all the Senators think I’m insane” (I did anyway). And you’re right, “I don’t care” is the punchline, but that’s exactly why the scene should end with it. Putting Sella’s reaction after that just feels unnecessary.

My two cents at least.

Good stuff going on here. Looking forward to baking at 350 degrees.

Sounds like your getting a little anxious 😁

Everything is coming along nicely guys

New version with normal-speed final shot:

I think the scene still needs that final shot, which means keeping the odd reaction earlier. Keep in mind that this scene comes on the heels of an attack on the castle and a serious encounter with Han, so a viewer may need an extra moment to adjust to a lighthearted tone, and the extra shot in that scene serves that purpose in front of the reunion with Poe. That’s how I feel about it anyway.

There still may be a bit of whiplash transitioning to Poe, but I’ll leave it up to the good people here as to which version is best. The scene works in either case. 😃

It definitely flows better with normal speed but that odd reaction shot is still kinda killing it, for me at least.

I think it’s great this way. The final shot of Sella is really necessary for the scene not to end too abruptly.

This one works for me. Nice editing NeverarGreat. Nothing you can do about the abrupt end, but it is ok since we don’t jump to Starkiller base or anywhere else that would make it very abrupt. It’s all at the base, going from the inside to the outside.

I think the reaction is fine, if not, fitting. The smile at the end is a good choice. It all works to me!

Thanks for the input everyone. After wracking my brain trying to extend the scene, I’ve got a few more potential solutions, but it seems like most people are happy with it as is, so I’ll just put the MEGA links to the most recent version below, as well as list the wacky ideas for completion’s sake:

Leia’s Demand to the Senate 8
Color Corrected
Dialogue Only
Music Only

Idea 1: Return 3PO to the scene:
“Should we contact the Resistance?”
“Immediately. Our future may depend on it.”
“Yes, of course General!”
“I need you to go to the Senate right away. Tell them I insist the Republic take action against the First Order.”
“Full respect…do you really think they’ll listen?”
“Not all the senators think I’m crazy. (smile reaction) Or maybe they do. I don’t care.”
“Oh my. This is a catastrophe.”

I doubt that this would work better than the scene as it is now, since it adds no new information.

Idea 2: Add to the joke (and plot).
“Not all the senators think I’m crazy.”
(Cut to Caluan Ematt in the shot from the deleted scenes where he says ‘all fighters clear for takeoff, all fighters clear’, except he’s dubbed to say something over the intercom like ‘General, the Senate has blocked all Resistance transmissions’.)
"…Or maybe they do. I don’t care."
(smile)

This idea is definitely weirder, but I kind of like it since it makes explicit the problem with the Republic, and it’s not for want of trying on the part of the Resistance.

It’s a fun idea, but I feel like if she heard the senate do that it would be strange in that situation to “not care” (and for Kor Sella to smile).

Another option would be to cut her last line and just leave it at “not all the senators think I’m crazy” followed by Kor Sella’s smile.

I am physically unable to cut the most Carrie Fisher line in the movie. 😃

That’s understandable…

Don’t want to distract from the Magik going on here but want to put this idea out in the air, I think I may have already anyway somewhere on the forums. What if Starkiller was made from the ruins of jeddah? The blast in Rouge one exposed it so they just built their super weapon right on its fuel source. Then the first order don’t have to drain the sun. It is ambitious I know.

It would make more sense for SKB to be Illum, though I don’t really like that idea myself.

Really great ideas going on here. The new and improved Leia scene did feel a little abrupt but after watching it a few more times, it really fits in nicely. The music is timed well, and your re-edited version (@Nevarar) is masterful. You were able to really make the scene work and I think it is really important because we need as much mentioning of the republic as possible.

We could pipe in audio from Neil deGrasse Tyson over the First Order’s or Resistance’s intercoms explaining that one star has the power to destroy ten thousand planets.
But yes, the idea is that, apparently, one star does not equal one firing. And as far as this edit goes, there’s nothing to say that it wasn’t built for a single-use against Capital Planet.

Can you please? Having Neil deGrasse Tyson make the cut would be phenomenal!

I think this could be implemented so smoothly!

Always could add a poster like that in a scene. It could be an easter egg! (/sarcasm)
