I mean yeah they’re definitely different and Mike’s look fine but honestly harmys look weird to me. Too much yellow and green. Obviously the Blu Ray colors are unfaithful to the original colors but they don’t look worse and most of the time to me they look better.

Star Wars is one I actually agree with. Not sure what the status of the Blu is but I remember the DVDs were terrible - specifically the blue snow on Hoth in ESB and the lightsabers during the final battle in ROTJ.

The lightsabers are an issue I definitely see, but I think they dialed back the blue on hoth.

Yeah even for star wars for me honestly. People go on and on about how terrible the Blu Ray look and how botched the colors are and some even say they are unwatchable and I’m like… Yeah I guess they are a little dark sometimes?

(Content changes aside obviously)

It’s a little dark alright.
I don’t mind the altered colors in most movies, believe it or not, since I don’t have a frame of reference. There was a time when I thought the 2004 master of ANH looked good. But once you start investigating the differences, it’s easy to get a little obsessed.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I don’t go anywhere to have eye problems. Why would I want that?

I definitely wish they had been a bit brighter but the colors don’t bother me.

I’d have agreed with that a couple versions back, but the 2.7 colors are great.

If the purple faces of the ANH dvd/bluray work for you, that’s ok. But I just can’t understand it.

I definitely think some of the regrades I’ve seen are worthwhile, but some go overboard. I don’t think any movie made in the last 10-15 years or so needs it unless you’re doing something significantly different with it - removing a “blanket tint” from the latest Captain America just seems wildly unnecessary to me.

There are some exceptions - the Fellowship of the Ring Extended BR is in dire need of a regrade (while I like kk650’s, it’s not perfect) - but mostly, unless it’s an older movie whose colors are obviously out of whack (Star Wars) or given revisionist “modernized” grading (Aliens), regrading is generally a case of finding fault because you’re looking for it rather than because it’s there.

I thought the Titanic regrade was a vast improvement over the Blu-ray.

That’s an example of “modernized” grading on a 20-year-old movie, so yeah, I agree with you there. Cameron seems to have a problem with that…

Now regrading, say, Avatar, on the other hand - that’s just a waste of time IMO.

I like colour regrades made to fan-edits if it helps provide a unique experience. Otherwise, I don’t trifle over it.

I like the colors for ANH in version 2.7. Blu-ray and DVD versions are abominations to me.

I guess some people are more sensitive to color changes than others. And I guess some other people don’t like people being fussy about things.

If you watch the comparisons in Harmy’s Sources Documentary or Mike Verta’s Legacy videos and aren’t impressed by the change in color and horrified by the bluray colors, you’ve go to have eye problems.

The blu ray looks a bit worse in Harmy’s Sources Documentary than it actually does because it’s a compressed Youtube video. As for the change in color, I think it looks better at times but I’m by no means “impressed” and no I’m not horrified by the bluray, other than Luke’s green lightsaber on the DVD of ANH.

Totally with you there. Maybe it’s because I’m a lazy viewer or because I don’t see color differences that well, but I see many of the color correction projects here and I’m all like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It has nothing to do with being lazy. The reason I brought this up is actually unrelated to Star Wars, which I can sympathize with since it’s colors actually are worse than most. I posted this because I stumbled on an old thread where a member was talking about how he had to watch things on laserdisc instead of the pristine HD bluray because the colors are supposedly better. (They aren’t, I know the movies being talked about well.)

But the re-graded colors in that clip suffer from the same problems, so the comparison is still valid.
And Leia was noticeably purple on my DVDs, so I’m sure that carried over to the bluray, even if it’s boosted by compression in the youtube clip.
The color re-grade shown in the clip is way to yellow, but like some of us have said, 2.7 looks great.

It looks better for sure, but I still prefer the overall look of the 2011 colors for the most part, although I will concede that at times they do look red in the face, especially aboard the tantive iv.

Author

Nah man the 2011 colors are pretty much shit.

Author

They are more consistent than the 2.5 Despecialized colors were, at least on ANH. To me, that counts for something. That said I don’t watch the blurays of Star Wars for obvious reasons other than colors so it doesn’t matter. Like I said, my complaint was directed at people who act indignant about movies on blu ray that don’t have bad colors.

Yeah, I don’t get the whole “I don’t like the colors on the Blu-Ray, guess I’ll stick with my 20-year-old Betamax copy!” thing at all.

Author
Time

That’s what I’m talkin’ 'bout. Especially when it’s done under the guise of the colors on the betamax copy being “theatrically accurate” when it probably isn’t even theatrically accurate to begin with.

That’s why I don’t watch them.
