Should Disney/LFL create an Alternative Prequel Trilogy?

Author

With the direction Disney/LFL is taking the ST and anthology film’s by so far ignoring what the PT established and by pleasing fans with OT nostalgia, do you think Disney/LFL should go through with creating an APT to not only have them line up better with the OT and their views on the ST & future spin-offs but to also please SW fans who were disappointed with GL’s PT?

Why not? If it was well done, I’d watch it.

God no. Six more years of movies about Anakin Skywalker is the absolute last thing I want.

Why bother doing what has already been done?

What they really ought to do is just release the alternative prequel trilogies they have just lying around in a vault.

Do you feel that way because Anakin or because Hayden?

I always thought a story about how Anakin became Vader could be great, they just did it terribly.

I’m just tired of the focus on the character in general. I wouldn’t mind some new stuff set around the same time as the prequels focusing on different stuff, but I’m too bored with the whole “Tragedy of Darth Vader” concept to want another crack at it, regardless of quality.

The problem wasn’t Hayden the problem was that Hayden was doing what George wanted him to do.

What if it wasn’t a “Tragedy of Darth Vader” concept like Lucas depicted it, but a backstory to Anakin, Obi Wan, the Clone Wars, the fall of the Jedi etc.?

I mean, if they made it I’m sure I’d watch it, and maybe even love it if it was well done, but it doesn’t seem like a great use of time or creative energy to me. I’ve never been particularly interested in that story beyond the broad strokes Ben gives in the OT. Better prequels would be a perk, but it’s not something I’m fiending for and if you gave me an hour I could probably think of a dozen other movies I’d rather have.

I think Lucasfilm should move on. Now, if some ambitious fan-film makers wanted to take a crack at it, I’d be okay with that, but I don’t want LFL to remake anything for now.

O, inb4 “TFA was already a remake!” and similar silliness.

I know, it was just faster to say “Hayden.”

I’ve already got my alternative PT, so this isn’t something that would pique my interest.

It’s not gonna happen regardless. They are making use of the prequel properties that were part of their 4 billion dollar purchase (e.g. Darth Maul, Mace Windu, even Jar Jar) and are not going to stop. For instance, the prequels are going to be in the upcoming Battlefront sequels. And I was just at Disney World recently and rode the updated Star Tours ride, and they had spent who knows how much money and time revamping the ride to include prequel (and sequel) characters and locations. They’re not gonna overwrite all that now. Also they were using Maul and prequel footage in their Star Wars stage/firework shows and the crowd seemed to love it as much as the rest. There is a sizable portion of the fanbase (particularly the “younglings”) who would be outraged if they did it anyway. And there are many more movies they could spend money on that would cover different ground and would not piss off those fans. Just gotta accept it, the prequels are here to stay.

You may have them already, but the rest of us deserve them as well, n’est-ce pas?

If this were to happen, I’m sure they’d be called rehashes 😛

Can they be rehashes if they’re really… prehashes?

The prequels are too ingrained in the public consciousness to simply remake them without a lot of issues. I think the best idea, if they went the prequel route, would be to make a trilogy that happens concurrently with the Lucas prequels and exists in the same continuity, but focus on the smaller players in the Clone Wars. Episode 1 starts in the middle of the clone wars, Episode 2 happens alongside ROTS, and Episode 3 depicts a galaxy ravaged by war under the iron fist of the Empire. Focusing on normal people rather than Jedi would make the Droid/Clone armies actually threatening, and it could explore some new droid design space since there were many separatist factions. The films could reference the political situation, but never more than happened in the OT. The Jedi remain largely mythical, the story takes place on the fringes of civilization like in the OT, everyone’s happy.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

With all the discussions that go on with fans in the SW community about how disappointing the PT is, the things it should and shouldn’t have been, and people having their own personal canons from watching the OT, it’s hard to imagine a Studio or ambitious fan filmmakers to not take a crack at it.

None of that is mainstream though. The films were still enormously successful at the box office, still widely known, and most of the general public doesn’t have a problem with them. Star Wars is Star Wars to them. It’s definitely not worth Disney’s time and money to appeal to a niche group of jaded OT fans, and it’s delusional to think it will happen when they don’t even show any interest in releasing the OUT.

the closest thing we are getting to a rebooted PT is the inevitable old republic film that we all know will be in the works the second disney realizes that the old republic era is the nuclear launch codes of merchandising

Please explain, because I can’t imagine this being true in any context.
