Granite Flats (2013-2015)

Saw this series pop up as a suggestion on Netflix on more than one occasion. Decided to give it a go. So glad I did. What seems like a simple premise quickly escalates in scope and stakes throughout the first season. The second season continues this, introducing new facets and characters played by the likes of Cary Elwes and the brilliant Christopher Lloyd! Season Three, while it wasn’t meant to cap the series, does so admirably. If you’re a fan of mystery and intrigue or hold a fascination with '60s era conspiracy, I highly recommend you give this series a chance.

Sounds interesting. Any similarity to Taken?

Oof, haven’t seen that in over a decade. From what I recall of Taken, Granite Flats is similar in the amount of intrigue but with far less adult themes while being far more grounded. Also different subject matter.

Having been away from home for over 48 days, I didn’t get much Star Trek viewing time. I actually stopped my run through TNG and watched the first few eps. of DS9, which were good. Now that I’m home, I picked up TNG where I left off, hoping for some fun space romping.

The episode I left off on just happened to be Tapestry. I was not emotionally prepared for Tapestry.

GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (2012)

Another great '80s doc. Somehow I don’t remember watching GLOW back in the day, despite it being right in my wheelhouse (I once got to meet Macho Man Savage backstage before an event where he lied and told me he would beat the Hulkster that night!). But this was still a lot of fun to watch. The end was especially neat and very touching.

9/10

Glow was enjoyable, but I would probably rate it 7 or 8 out of 10. Shrug

Death Note - 9/10

Never thought Anime could be this good.

That’s because it can’t and you’re lying to yourself 😃

I think it’s safe to say that the meme can die now…

On a serious note I don’t think that there’s any other Anime that’ll come close.

Watched it myself some weeks back. I feel the show started running on fumes once L exited stage left and the final episode was a bit underwhelming, so I gave it an 8.

Admittedly Near’s arc wasn’t as exciting or tense, but the depths of their machinations when it came to their face to face was brilliant. I have a similar opinion when it comes to the High Sparrow story line in GoT where it’s dip in quality looks better in retrospect once I can think about the full story. Aside from the twist the last Episode could have used another ‘wow’ moment but that’s asking a lot imo.

…di-…did you say Death Note is the best anime in existence?

I’m sorry but I guess I can’t say I agree. It’s kind of bad. It’s not interesting or anything. I don’t mean to say my opinion is right, but my opinion is totally right 😉.

On another note, I’ve been watching a Japanese cartoon series called Ranma 1/2. It’s really great (much better than Death Note 😉). I actually started watching it because this trailer for the first theatrical film in the series was at the end of all the 4Kids Pokemon VHS tapes, and recently I found the series and decided to check it out. (with the original audio, of course; that English voice is awful!)

The show is essentially Dexter with a magic Sniper Rifle. There is a very short list of things that are more interesting.

I watched all of The Inbetweeners. Quite a fun show, not high art or anything but quite relatable and enjoyable.

Okay.

called Ranma 1/2

Hahaha, that “boy becomes girl when splashed with water” epic?

I’ve been watching episodes of a '90s TV show called Ready or Not on YouTube. Two more episodes, and I’ll have finished the first season.

It’s kinda sad I have to watch an obscure 24-year-old kids’ show to get a Laura Bertram fix. I wish she’d stop wasting her talent on bit parts and get a regular gig on a quality series already.

They clearly should have ended it on episode 25, and left it open-ended as to what Light would do now that his nemesis was gone.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Orphan Black series finale - mostly an epilogue after 15 minutes of finale, and a bit overly happy/sappy, but not bad. Seasons 1 and 4 are still the best seasons, but the entire show is worth watching for Tatiana Maslany.

Game of Thrones - anyone else feel like this season is the show on fast-forward? They should’ve stuck with two 10-episode seasons to even out the pacing instead of this weird 7- and 6-episode final seasons business.

I like the change of pace due to the fact that things like the meeting between Jon and Danny would have been pushed towards the middle of the Season. Secondly, Game of Thrones has always needed some trimming and for the story George is telling it seems sufficient to remove a few episodes to have the plot progress faster. Also the fact that this war with the Lannisters has to end soon for victory in the Great War to be viable makes me okay with the change.

I am so glad this show is over so that I don’t have to keep watching it (my wife likes it more than I do). But I agree that Tatiana Maslany does a great job in it, and that alone makes most of the seasons worth watching.

Haven’t had the chance to watch any of the new season. I tend to think the show declined into schlock after the great first season, but I might as well finish it now that I’ve gotten this far.

Honestly this might be my least favorite season thus far. Very rushed. Also it feels kind of fan servicey and indulgent in ways that the show never was before (season 6 was a little guilty of this too).

Plus they never figured out how to make Queen Dany work as a character and now that she’s such a big part of it all it’s starting to become a real problem.

Atypical

Almost unwatchable. The mom is the focus of half the show and is one of the most unlikeable characters in any show I’ve ever seen and the other characters are just really boring. I’ll never finish this one.

EDIT: It’s also pretty exploitative in my opinion. I’m not sure if Netflix is pretending to be charitable and saintly by supposedly “starting a conversation” about autism with this show like they claimed to on the subject of teen suicide and 13 Reasons Why, but if they are they should be ashamed of themselves.
