Transformers - The Last Knight (2017)

I did not go willingly into The Last Knight. The promise of a “nice burger” beforehand, a “bit of a laugh” in the cinema and the gentle suggestion of some “adult situations” arising when we got home ultimately meant I was powerless but to comply. Sadly, I was disappointed on all but one count.

We’ve all been here before - too long, not as funny as it thinks it is, offensively edited etc. I went in with the lowest of expectations and just about enjoyed it. I didn’t get half as bored as I did during the last one and the visual effects are absolutely jaw-droppingly good. The changing aspect ratio was annoying though - why don’t they make it expand widthways instead of jumping up and down?!

The plot is a load of bobbins and for anybody not from the U.K. let me tell you that, Sir Anthony Hopkins or not, you will likely be shot, tazed or beaten if you just walk up to 10, Downing Street’s front door and demand to be let in. Oh, and Stonehenge might be in the countryside but it’s next to a big road.

The highlight for me was “Little J-Lo”, a cracking actress who I think ought to have had more screen time… actually, do you know who really should’ve had more screen time? The bloody Transformers! Considering the name of the film it felt like they were barely in it.

Still, the burger was nice.

I give it 1.75 thisaintthelastnuthin’s out of 5.

Is there a reason for the changing aspect ratio? I get the idea behind it in Grand Budapest Hotel and I can see the technical reasons for it in movies with Imax scenes, but this is just a stupid Transformers movie. I saw a sign at my cinema informing viewers that the changing aspect ratio is intended by the director and not a malfunction. This should indicate how the target audience of a Transformers movie thinks about changing aspect ratios.

IIRC, wasn’t the whole movie was shot with IMAX 3D cameras?

For reasons I won’t get into, I saw it, and I don’t for a second blame the people who thought it was a malfunction.

Basically, the film shifts ratios practically every shot, with no care given as to when and why. Some of it was shot with IMAX cameras, but that’s just one of the many formats used. Again, I’m not talking about specific scenes/sequences, I’m talking individual shots within scenes that have different aspect ratios. I’ve honestly never seen anything like it (besides in bad student films/fan edits).

Wow, I never thought it was that bad. Are they tired of making these movies and want to alienate their viewers?

In my experience people seldom get up to complain when the movie is out of focus. Only weirdos like us would even notice the aspect ratios changing. 😉

Spider-Man: Homecoming - 9/10

Most fun I’ve had at the movies since the other day when I saw Baby Driver. Still, what an AWESOME film!

Amarcord (1973) – I am absolutely certain I did not understand everything going on here.

It’s a Fellini movie, some of it is not easy to understand.

That is exactly why I’m sure I did not understand everything.

The Southerner – Americana written and directed by a French man.

Did you at least sneak in without paying for a ticket? 😉

Spiderman Homecoming (2017):

It’s okay.

In prep for Spider-man Homecoming, we started our Spidey marathon tonight with 2002’s debut. I saw the film in the theater and loved it. Having re-watched tonight, some of the films’ deficiencies have become apparent. The CGI, like many films from the era, has not aged well. And IMHO, the movie itself has not aged well…Macy Gray, Macho Man ‘Ohhhhhh yeaaaaahhhh’.
A bunch of dialog is God awful…‘deliver us from…eeevvvviiiilllll’ or Osborn’s ‘…Don’t tell…Harry…’ Uncle Ben’s death scene…'Perrrer, Perrrer…". The Goblin’s suit and mask, crap.

But I do still like the film, it just doesn’t have that luster it once did. Jameson is perfect and apart from a few of her lines, I liked Aunt May and Tobey M was a great choice to play Peter, even if his fighting prowess was a bit lacking. Overall, 7/10 for me.

We recently bought the Brendan Frasier Mummy Trilogy on Blu-ray and although the first two are pretty fun, the thirds installment was terrible and had zero chemistry between Fraiser’s character and the new Evie. Having never seen the third film, I was not surprised that it sucked…but at least the didn’t run out of CGI budget in that one.

Mummy 7/10
Mummy Return 7.5/10
Mummy something something we are in China Now, don’t bother…

It had it’s moments. I thought those Yetis were awesome. And it’s probably way better than the Tom Cruise reboot. 😉

Better than Mummy Impossible:Rogue Mummy!!! Yeah, you’re right. And I did like the Yeti; it was pretty decent CGI which almost made for the Scorpion King at the of ‘Returns’…almost. Actually, it was kind of funny, when I saw the film, the scenes in the nightclub reminded me an awful lot of Temple of Doom, just without the charisma of Indiana.

Was that a spoiler?

I don’t care about Spider-Man so I wouldn’t know.

I think he’s mad that one69chev said that Uncle Ben’s death scene was “God awful”. So am I.

In fact…

Yeah I still think that’s far and away the best Spider-Man movie (Haven’t seen homecoming yet though) so far. I suppose the deliver us line was a bit over the top but it really didn’t bother me and the other two things you mentioned I thought worked very well.

Uncle Ben’s death scene is Kubrick level compared to the same scene in The Amazing Spider-Man.

Not enough people read the EU.
