Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers ** — Page 26

Wow! Bad news travels fast. Disney is going to have a hard time putting a positive spin on this one. How many months were left in the shoot? There could even be a Director’s guild dispute over how much of the finished film was directed by whom.\

Who would even want the burden of stepping into a movie five months into production?

Last Jedi might be the only SW movie I have much faith in anymore. Between this and Book of Hank or whatever Trevorrow just did, yikes.

I think it’s too soon for prognostications of doom.

I wonder if J.J.'s phone is ringing right now.

Not like I had any faith in this to begin with, but damn!

It’s clear these movies are being directed by marketing execs and the Disney boardroom. Seems the directors could no longer stand to see their names attached next to this frankenstein’s monster of venture capitalism.

Wonder if we’ll get the director’s side of things eventually, unless they signed a NDA that covers this scenario.

probably quit over the film becoming more focused on Lando. Their deal had obviously been altered and likely was getting worse all the time.

They did put out a statement emphasizing creative differences. It looked to me like more than just boiler-plate PR.

The EW article says they clashed with Kasden as well. Kasden was responsible for some of the best parts of Star Wars and he knows Han Solo like only 70’s Lucas and Brian Daley did.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Sheesh. I’ve had a sense of distaste at the idea of a young Han Solo film from the beginning, and I’m glad these standalone can be ignored easily. Star Wars is special, and I hope it doesn’t spiral downward into Marvel… I guess the best word would be oversaturation, that sense of having so much content that none of it feels special anymore.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Once the rest of the cast and crew quit, Disney might be able to rename this one.

I’m getting kind of confused as to who had creative disagreements with whom? From what I’ve gathered Lord and Miller left the project as opposed to being fired, and I think it was EW who said that they had disagreements with Kasdan. But according to this article the disagreements were between Kasdan and Kennedy?

EDIT: Nevermind.

Update from The Hollywood Reporter

Lord and Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) have a comedic sensibility and improvisational style while Kasdan favors a strict adherence to the written word — what is on the page is what must be shot.

The creative clash, according to one insider, also came down to differences in understanding the character of Han Solo. “People need to understand that Han Solo is not a comedic personality. He’s sarcastic and selfish,” said that source.

The friction was felt almost immediately when the movie began shooting in February, sources say, but the directors always thought it could be worked through. Kennedy, the producer and head of Lucasfilm, decided to back her lifelong colleague, who shaped much of Solo’s character in Empire and ‪Return of the Jedi and who had a specific tone in mind for the new movie. The duo also didn’t feel they had the support of producer Allison Shearmur, who was acting as Lucasfilm’s representative on the London set.

I have to say I’m supportive of this parting of ways. I don’t think these directors were a good fit. The question has to be asked why were they even hired in the first place?

As none of us has seen what they actually shot, that’s presuming an awful lot. And a change this late in production is almost unprecedented.

It sounds to me like the conflict was mostly over characterization and dialogue. I’m sure all of the large set pieces, VFX shots, etc. went according to script. If RO could add several elaborate CG moments and action set pieces as late in production as they did I’m sure this film won’t have too many difficulties reshooting more character focused scenes.

Han not being portrayed right is the best of reasons to split but the worse problem the film could have had.

It’s still going to be messy determining who gets a director credit at the end of the day. Lord and Miller might even pull a Alan Smithee, or whatever the pseudonym is for disgruntled directors is these days.

This whole mess is going to have an effect on who sits in the director’s chair for future SW films.
