I agree with most of your list, but why do you think the extended rancor scene is good? It’s repetitive, since you already get to see the same **** going on in the scene with Luke and the guard. The off-camera screams in the original were enough to cue in the audience that something bad happened to people who fall down there. It also built suspense towards what Luke was up against, when that big giant metal door slowly opens and reveals the Rancor. The SE change is a terrible editing mistake.

Agreed. I like that they got the original actress who played Oola, but the scene is a lot like the wampa additions to Empire. Ruins the mystery/suspense.

You can make a fanedit yourself, which is what I’m doing. Not everyone will agree on which changes are good and which are bad though.

If I had the talent and know I would attempt it lol. But sadly I do not have any knowledge to do this. Nor do I have the proper equipment or software.

I liked the Raincore scene because it showed what happened to Oola. And I liked seeing that happen. But honestly its on there because its one i loved as a kid, even thought i know its a bit repetitive.

I would like to make my own edit, as I like the originals and some of the 2011 special editions, minus the “Noooooooo” and Hayden as Anakin in ROTJ. I would also take SOME of the deleted scenes and reincorporate them into the films, but also use the new stuff that was in the 2011 SW trilogy blu-rays. I would also like to use some of what Adywan did, and I’m waiting patiently to see what he did to The Empire Strikes Back.

I’m going to have to make a list of what to keep, what to insert, and what to delete from all the material that is out there and future stuff from Adywan.

Heres a little list

The New Sandcrawler
That Aurebesh replaced English
R2’s color correction, Blue R2 not Black R2
Oolas Raincore Pit extension
Removal of the Cardboard Cutouts in ANH and replacing with actual people (BEST CHANGE)
Better Lightsaber Effects
Blast Doors
Biggs Darklighter

Now i love that we have the Despecialized Edition, But i wish we had a Harmys Special Edition with the Good things that were added/fixed.

You sound like you’d like kk650’s semi-specialized editions… they are absolutely fantastic

I’m not a fan of his color correction, but otherwise I would recommend them as well if you like the color yellow. (Granted his most recent update dials it back a little)

Seconded. Maybe a proper color correction would make that effect less obvious in the unalterds.

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” --George Lucas on March 3, 1988

But it still doesn’t show what happened to her anymore than the original edit does. We see her in the pit for a couple of shots that ruin the original flow, but her demise is still off screen. (if ya like it, that’s fine, I’m just sayin’)
Also, it’s Rancor. Not Raincore.

It’s heavy metal performed under torrential downpours. That’s why it’s so obscure; most raincore musicians end up electrocuted before they ever record an album.

It would technically be hard rock, as heavy metal and -core aren’t compatible.

I love this. Sounds like an H2G2 entry.

I like a lot of the changes but I think one of my favourites is actually the ending music and montage from Return of the Jedi, I think it suits the ending far better

I have watched the despecialized edition a few times with my four-year-old in the room and he usually doesn’t pay attention.

Last week we had the TBS airings on TV and he goes “wow, that stormtrooper is riding a Komodo Dragon!”

So the pointless CGI actually does work on some people.

That Aurebesh replaced English

I really hate this change. Linguistics is a hobby of mine, and Aurebesh is one of the most poorly designed fictional writing systems ever, if not the most poorly designed one. It’s really just the English alphabet, with a few digraphs given their own letter, but the digraph letters are optional, anyway. I’d rather not think about it. I’d honestly prefer changing all the Aurebesh in the movies to the Latin Alphabet over changing that one piece of Latin to Aurebesh. I hate Aurebesh.

Side note: Huttese is one of the most (if not the most) poorly designed conlang, too. Linguistics isn’t Star Wars’s strong suit.

The recomposited miniature effects are an unambiguous improvement. A tasteful, subtle enhancement that gives the original visuals an entirely new level of realism. If Lucas had stopped there, very few people would give a crap about getting their hands on the theatrical versions.

Aurebesh wasn’t created to be a plausible alphabet or even to be readable; it was created to look cool in the background of a movie in 1983. It’s more than adequate to the purposes of the original trilogy. If you’re watching those movies and all you can think of is “lore” and “worldbuilding” piled on years later, you might be watching them wrong.

While it wasn’t originally created with that in mind, they did create an actual system, and in the prequels, Special Editions, spinoffs, etc, you can actually translate Aurebesh. (And the change was made after Aurebesh got its own system, you can actually translate the “power” thing)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with expanding the story/universe? Books and other media and additions obviously shouldn’t be a scapegoat for explaining away plotholes and glaring issues, but this is harmless.

I am okay with any change my mom wouldn’t notice (in other words, any person who is not a star wars fan by any measure, but has seen all the films at some point)…
in other words, my mom would never notice that they showed more of cloud city or made the Rancor look better.
But I remember she did notice the news songs in ROTJ and Anakin’s ghost

When I watch the despecialized I don’t see anything at all wrong. I never would have changed a thing. If Lucas were a better filmmaker he would have concentrated on making more movies instead of fiddling with the past. He wasn’t even confident enough to write the prequels without R2 and 3PO wedged in and ruining continuity.
I love the guy for creating the best movie universe ever, but I’m also frustrated at what he did to it later on.
Then he whined and said he wanted to make experimental cinema verite. Well you had more money than any other independent filmmaker ever. What was stopping you?

Most of the special effects enhancements don’t bother me too much although I really don’t like the replacement of practical models with CGI during the space battles. People worked hard on those. They won Oscars for that hard work. The revisions take that away from the films. Most of the CGI shots are outdated now as it is.

One change I really don’t like is the replacement of Clive Revill and Elaine Baker’s work as the Emperor in The Empire Strikes Back. It’s certainly true that Ian McDiarmid’s performance in Return of the Jedi was hauntingly delightful and that his work in Revenge of the Sith was the film’s best asset, but I just don’t like seeing peoples’ roles in films get erased from history just for the sake of something so minor as inter-textual consistency. I feel the same way about the stock footage of Hayden Christensen that was used to replace Sebastian Shaw’s Anakin Skywalker. Shouldn’t have been done.

I like the updating of the lightsaber and blaster effects though. That stuff’s so minor it doesn’t really matter.
