Just finished Schindler’s List.

It might be early to say it, but this might be one of the best films I have ever seen. Easily my favorite of Spielbergs. The character arc was just beautiful. The acting was outstanding. The direction by Spielberg was impeccable. The music was beyond moving. This was very hard to get through but I’m glad I made the journey. I might even say I enjoyed it more than Its A Wonderful Life. I think that so far, I like this the most from the top 100 of the AFI. Damn, it was truly moving.

You guys are operating under the assumption that Marvel digitally replaces their heads.

The process is actually more like a moving photoshop job where they’re manipulating the actor’s actual faces instead of creating digital doubles.

Here’s an example.

This process just wasn’t possible for Rogue One because the key actor is deceased. As for Carrie, how to put this delicately, she would not have been able to double for her 19 year old self.

Actors with the same build and facial structure?

CG Tarkin was great in the first viewing. CG Leia worked but a little distracting. In the second viewing they were both a bit distracting.

Saw Alien Covenant last night.

As with Prometheus the characters were intensely stupid. David and the White Toothy Things are the only things good about this movie.
My expectations were so low that it didn’t annoy me as much this time.
It’s very much like watching Attack of the Clones only with slightly less annoying dialogue and more sexy showers.

Actually, darthrush, you should watch this one too. I haven’t seen it in a long time. I will probably watch it this weekend.

I loved the fight choreography the first time I saw this.

Prometheus.

I watched it in preparation for seeing Alien: Covenant tomorrow, and I’m still unsure what to rate this. On the plus side, the visuals are polished and impressive. There was also a religious component that was somewhat interesting. I didn’t hate any of the characters, though the two guys who got killed in the alien ship richly deserved their fates.

I still have no idea what the Engineers want or what the Xenomorphs have to do with any of this. I don’t know why the Engineers created humans or why they’re different than them despite being genetically identical.

Fassbender was intriguing, the penultimate scene (which should have been the final scene) was interesting, and did I mention the set design?

Overall, it feels like a prelude to a diabolical religious service - it sets the mood while providing almost nothing in the way of plot or even worldbuilding. If Alien: Covenant leans into this I’ll be more likely to consider this movie a success, but it doesn’t hold up on its own.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Life is Beautiful:

I hadn’t seen this in a long time and watched it again tonight. Very good movie, if not necessarily perfect. Roberto Benigni and his real life wife Nicoletta Braschi are a very loving and memorable on-screen couple. The first half of the movie is as romantic as films get. The comedy – at times full of wit, and at other times a mix of gags and even the bizarre – is the kind that provokes constant warm smiles, mixed in with occasional chuckles and laughs. Above all, this is an uplifting and endearing film, carried by the presence of Benigni, its lead actor and director, who commands the screen in a unique way that few others have ever achieved.

The only problem with this movie, I’m afraid, is the lack of levity when it comes to Guido’s character, particularly in the concentration camp scenes during the last half of the movie. Every time there is a down note in this film, the camera is always on someone else…usually his wife. The film really needed a moment here or there where the spirit of the main character was tested to the limit. I think the film would have been far greater had there been a scene or two where Guido nearly breaks down, shows some doubt or psychological strain, something. Benigni’s idol, Charlie Chaplin, was capable of eliciting those heartbreaking tears at the same time he filled his movies with fun and joy, but here Benigni’s character Guido just doesn’t have that same dynamic range.

I really do like and enjoy this movie though, and I give it 3.5 / 4 stars. It just seems like the film could have been more. What if there had been one more scene near the beginning that more strongly established the fascist setting and background tone? What if Guido and his friend had discussed something more philosophical, like fate, when they were lying in bed and talking about willpower? Emphasizing fate a little more strongly could have quashed any stalker vibes given off during a couple of the romantic scenes. And what if there had been an intermission after the greenhouse scene? I think it would have benefited the film to have been broken into two halves, as the first half and the second half of the movie are so starkly different. The concentration camp scenes then could have allowed for a little more screentime, and a chance to briefly glimpse our hero’s psychological despair.

A little more pride and emphasis on Guido and his son’s Jewish identity were sorely missing as well.

I realize an epic is not the kind of film Benigni wanted to make, but I can’t help but see the potential there. Still, this is a unique and memorable film, and one that I enjoy watching very much.

Split (2016)

What a frightening, depressing, thrilling movie! I loved it! I’ve hung in there with Shyamalan, even when others abandoned him. Sure, he’s made some flops, but he really is willing to try something different. He is an ingenious storyteller. And vague spoiler alert I love that he tied this one in with one of my previous favorites of his. With that, I hope he can tie the divergent storylines together in a final sequel.

Bottom line: I loved this movie!

Prometheus - Special Edition (fanedit released 2013)

Finally a decent film! I still don’t care for the core concept behind it but at least it’s not a giant muddled mess anymore. The film feels tighter and more streamlined. The reincorporated scenes help clear up various character motivations. All of the bloat has been excised. I really don’t understand how Lindelof scored this gig. Something simple like the handling of Fifield and Millburn was just so incredibly botched. But this fanedit really saved the film.

Rewatched this fan edit and my first review remains about the same. I’m kind of afraid to rewatch the theatrical edition, what if my brain melts? This fan edit was an impressive accomplishment but the film is still overall fairly dull.

ALIEN: Covenant (2017)

I’m pretty sure I’m completely over the idea of prequels. As we all know here, the Star Wars prequels were awful. The Star Trek reboot/prequels were disappointments and the new prequel series looks like more of the same. Let’s move forward, shall we?

Covenant is definitely an improvement over Prometheus. But that’s not much of an accomplishment. Fassbender really shines here and is the best part of the film. The rest of the characters suffer from varying degrees of stupidity. I don’t know what it is with Ridley Scott these days but his characters seem to exude incompetence.

It makes me very sad that the latest news is that the Blomkamp ALIEN sequel is dead. I’d much rather explore an expanding Xenomorph threat than continue to suffer through Scott’s navel-gazing contemplation of creation and man’s origins.

Conan The Barbarian (1982):

Arnold is pretty up and down in this, but considering how little dialogue there is in the movie it’s not worth bringing up. I was expecting a mostly average fantasy movie with a little bit of gore, but I was pleasantly suprised when I actually watched it. The music in particular is probably some of the best I’ve ever heard in a movie, the great cinematography also helps with the shots of expansive landscape. I was also completely caught off guard by how unconventionally the story was told, compared to other fantasy movies, there is very little dialogue in this and if there was no dialogue at all I would be still be able to understand what was happening. Another interesting thing I noticed was despite obviously being set in a fictional period of history and being a fantasy movie, the elements of fantasy are kept to a minimum and are used to advance the plot or provide setpieces (Doom’s stare, the slutty witch, giant snake, Doom turning into a snake and bringing Conan back to life), instead of just having magic happen left, right and centre for a majority of the runtime to showcase special effects. So its not only fantastical escapism but also feels grounded to the point I could feel immersed in a world that didn’t exist. Please watch this movie.

Alien: Covenant — 4/10

In the spirit of George Lucas, Ridley Scott completely dismantles the mystery of the Xenomorph in the most stupid & unoriginal way. Fox should rename the movie to “Alien: Plot Convenience”. Dumb characters, dumb situations. It’s unbelievable that Scott went with this terrible script.

Bring in Neill Bloomkamp asap.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

Would have loved to see that one.

Alien - 8.5/10 (Theatrical Cut)

Enjoyed this quite a bit more the second time around and a lot of that had to do with the fact that it wasn’t the Director’s Cut. I’m definitely never watching that version again.

Alien Covenant - 7.5/10

So much to say but I’ll just give semi spoilery bullet points:

Lord Haseo said:

  • Felt like an Alien film much more than Prometheus did
  • Characters acted like idiotic horror movie characters but I definitely liked a few of them
  • David is even more interesting than he was in Prometheus and is now one of my favorite villains though I shouldn’t really call him that considering I’m not privy to what his long term machinations are.
  • A lot of questions have yet to be answered and it’s starting to really frustrate me
  • The horror elements of Alien and the philosophical aspects of Prometheus were somewhat lacking in my opinion; the former being the least shown element of the three present in the film
  • The philosophical elements that are present are executed far more efficiently than Prometheus and since my viewing last night I can’t stop pondering about the esoteric nature of intelligent life and how literal perfection could be crafted and how that would effect the environment these beings would inhabit
    EDIT:
Another thing that has crossed my mind since I watched Covenant is the question of who is worthy of life. Most people certainly aren’t in the context of Earth but on a cosmic level where would we rank in terms of intelligent beings? I very much doubt humans who are blinded by emotions, morality and a self destructive nature would be close to what the apex of life is like beyond our small corner of the universe. That’s not even factoring in the short life spans and frail bodies we have.

I’m not working on Thursday so I’ll probably go see it again if I’m feeling up it.

I concur. Much better than the “amazing” reboot from a few years ago. Totally don’t get the hate for toby as Peter Parker. I thought both of those movies were very well done.

I disagree. Garfield was far better than Toby for me. The first of the Amazing reboots was quite good. The only one from the Raimi trilogy that impressed me all that much was the second. Never understand the mass amount of love for the first one. I still think it is a pretty mediocre flick.

I first watched this movie in 2009; I thought it was mediocre. I rewatched it last night; this time I found I liked it. It’s still nothing transcendent, but it’s no Inedible Hulk, either.

Well, first off, you’re just plain wrong. 😛

But really, the first two Raimi films are what I consider masterpieces of modern cinema, and they are among the most perfect comic book films ever made.

Not only is Raimi an amazing director, but he was pretty much the perfect director they could’ve gotten. He’s a fan of the comics, he enjoys and understands the characters, and he’s just plain fun. Everything he brought to those films blows Marc Webb out of the water. Who wants a “dark and gritty” Spider-Man film? I’d rather have some comic book optimism.

And the hate for Tobey Maguire as Peter has no legs to stand on. He was perfectly cast (along with everyone else, actually). People seem to complain about a few things in general; he makes weird faces at times/is just goofy looking, he cries too much (understandable and well performed every time save for the third film), and he’s supposedly not “transformed” enough under the mask. None of these complaints that I’ve read/heard make any sense. Andrew Garfield is just awful as Peter IMO. He’s not a genius nerd who gets picked on by bullies, he’s a genius hot guy who protects those who are bullied and he’s just kind of a jerk sometimes, and his performances are just bad most of the time.

J.K. Simmons is J. Jonah Jameson.

Cliff Robertson is Uncle Ben.

Rosemary Harris is Aunt May.

Willem Dafoe is Norman Osborn.

The only complaint about those films that I understand is that Maryjane is underdeveloped. This is somewhat valid, but even this I don’t feel is really that valid either, because she is developed as much as she needs to be, and though she may be a primary character, the films aren’t really about her. I’m fine with what they did, because she does have a developed character, despite being weaker than some others. And Kirsten Dunst does a great job with her.

I wouldn’t call them perfect modern movies or anything, but I do quite like the first two Raimi Spider-Movies. Of course, I only own the first one on VHS so if I watched it in a modern format I’d probably like it more, and it’s been several years since watching the second one.
