If you prefer the Prequels we are fine with that. But the new designs didn’t look like stemming from the same universe than the oscar winning “dull“ ones.

I just want to know what looked dull to you in the PT.

Nothing. You brought up the “dull“ word for the OT, I chose “generic“ for the prequels.

Whoops. I meant- what looked generic to you from the PT?

What looked generic? The ship desogns, the weapons, the uniforms and the alien designs.

“People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians”

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” --George Lucas on March 3, 1988

Many things looked generic

I mean, Doug Chiang and Ryan Church are pretty well respected.

So is Ewan McGregor, Liam Nesson, Natalie Portman…

False equivalence. Directing actors=/=directing concept artists.
Actors are more dependent on the director for things like Motivation, while concept artists just draw things George wants (he says “sinkhole planet”, they draw Utapau, then go back and forth till he likes it).
A concept artist is less dependent on the director moment by moment.

This is ridiculous.

Specifics. Give me one thing in particular that you thought looked generic.

LOL. if they weren’t so generic, that request might be feasible.

That doesn’t make sense. Something being generic shouldn’t stop you from be able to mention it. If anything, if something stood out to you as uninspired you should be able to remember it for critique reasons.

I actually really like a lot of the clone designs and equipment, but the droids are mostly somewhere between forgettable to bad (other than the droidekas… which are cool). The Jedi fighters (and ARC-170s) are pretty sweet.

All those “flying cars” on Coruscant are god awful… they look like something out of a cartoon

I always like the Trade Federation battle ships… and some of the other separatist capital ships are cool, but pretty much all the droid fighters suck.

I think there are two reasons the designs can come across generic in the prequels.

The first being because there is so much of it thrown around on screen. Each design might look great on paper, but when there is so much happening in each frame it just becomes an orgy of visuals (which are often very similar) competing for your attention.

I think the second reason is the fact that these were the first films that really relied this heavily on CGI, and as great as it was for its time, it has a tendency to come across as very flat- especially in those ground based scenes with CGI backgrounds and landscapes, where things tend to blend together and nothing pops (Coruscant and Geonosis scenes come to mind). The color grading also plays a part in this. Although the space scenes tend to fare a little bit better in regards to this.

That being said, I do think there are at least a handful of designs which could be described as generic at best.

Some examples (in my opinion)…

Generic- Most of the Droid Army
Bad- RotS Jedi Starfighter
Destinctly not Star Warsy- Grevious

Disagree. I like how they resembled TIE Fighters.

Yes, but they cheated the fact Artoo’s butt would be hanging out the bottom in real life. 😉

The only thing more silly is how they made him fit in a Naboo starfighter.

The AOTC Jedi ships get a pass, since it’s supposed to be canon they integrate only an astromech’s head to the fuselage.

The Jedi Starfighter proves that Lucas designed the movie BEFORE he finished the script.

(AOTC)
“Oh hey Doug Chiang, paint an edgy starfighter for the Jedi that resembles an OT Stardestroyer.”

[Months later]
“Oh damn, i need an R2 droid for Ewan so that he can deliver some explanatory dialogue on his way to Kamino … Doug, put the R2 droid somewhere … here. Looks good to me.”

(ROTS)
“Hey Doug, this time paint an edgy starfighter for the Jedi that resembles the illegitimate child of a Tie-Fighter and a Stardestroyer. And hey, i need R2 to eject somehow on General Grievous’ ship. Come up with a lazy solution that will look good to me.”

[Months later]
“Oh damn, how are Anakin & Obi-Wan supposed to pilot these things properly when those extended wings block their view left and right? Pffh, i don’t care … looks good to me.”

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

  1. edgy doesn’t mean what you seem to think it means
  2. doesn’t your visibility complaint apply to tie fighters even moreso?
  3. is Luke’s expository dialogue to R2 on his way to Dagobah somehow different?

  1. Lucas himself used the word ‘edgy’ during the specific AOTC webdoc that shows the Jedi Starfighter design.

  2. No. When i played the LucasArts PC game TIE-FIGHTER there was nothing blocking my view.

  3. No. But the design of the X-Wing (hence the position of the R2 droid) was done with the script IN MIND - the design of the Jedi Starfighter wasn’t.

Why didn’t they just make the fighters larger?

Why the need for R2 droids in the PT anyway? Lucas could have come up with a new and totally different kind of droid for the Prequels.

I didn’t realize that The Clone Wars Jedi starfighters also have questionable designs.

How does having an Astromech head sticking up in your field of vision make any sense at all?

Lucas said way back during production on ESB that Artoo and Threepio were the only characters intended to appear in the entire saga. Therefore R2 units have been around a long while.
