Info: Interesting Video Finds Alternate Return Of The Jedi Dialogue

Hello Gang,

Well I’m going through my SW video collection and I found a tape with some interesting clips. 1clip is the original SW Opening Crawl without EpisodeIV A New Hope. Another segment is a PM Magazine special that was run on Return of the Jedi. This shows a clip that I believe is deleted from Jedi, it’s a very small clip about 5 seconds but it features Admiral Akbar and his aid. His aid has a line of dialogue right before Akbar says “It’s a trap!”. If I’m not mistaken, the aid never had any dialogue in the released version of Jedi is this correct? It was 3:00am when I found this so I didn’t go back and check my actual Jedi videos. But I’m remembering that the Akbar “It’s a trap!” line was in response to what Lando was saying NOT an aid. Also on this special is an interesting interview with Mark Hamill where they confirm 9 movies and Mark talks about how he and Lucas are in discussion of a Mark/Luke’s role in the SEQUIL trilogy. Very interesting, this is the only interview I that I know of where someone actually talks about the 3 trilogies, (other than in print, which isn’t nearly as reliable)

Also, I was wondering if anyone else has every caught this. I remember as a kid watching Jedi and listening to my Jedi Record which tells the entire story of Jedi that durring the Sarlac Pit fight, when Han is rescuing Lando, Lando says “Wait, I thought you were blind” the version that I remember on my record and in the theater had Han saying “It’s all right I can see a lot better” however when I first got the THX home videos Han says “It’s allright, Trust Me”. For years this line allways bugged me because I swore I heard him say “I can see a lot better” instead of “Trust Me”. On the 2004 DVDs, they changed his line back to “I can see alot better”. I check my videos to verify that the line was changed and I wasn’t going crazy. SO, has anyone else caught this tiny difference? I’ve never heard any discussion on this changed line before.

Those tapes do sound very promising indeed. I have no idea on the changed dialogue, however, as soon as everyone sees this post they'll be replying like mad (I think), to get the crawl and the interview. I sure who you can get someone to do transfers of them - then Rikter can upload them to MySpleen.

That line change is fairly well-documented, but those other clips you have do indeed sound mightily salivating.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Agreed. I'd like to see the Ackbar clip.

"1clip is the original SW Opening Crawl without EpisodeIV A New Hope."

Is it the full crawl, or just the same as what was shown on Empire of Dreams?

"I check my videos to verify that the line was changed and I wasn't going crazy. SO, has anyone else caught this tiny difference? I've never heard any discussion on this changed line before."

Yes, it has been changed and noted.

I figured with all of your keen ears. (would've never noticed all the audio differences in music, effects etc, and I'm a musician. ) That someone would have picked up on the Han line.

As for the opening crawl, It is in it's entirety. The quality isn't that great, but it's just washed out and can hopefully be fixed when capturing/authoring it. I'm not sure where it came from or what the source is, I've been collecting SW vids for about 10 years now and I never kept track of who I traded what with to my regret. I do know that it's not something that was created on computer because at the time I acquired it, that sort of technology wasn't available to the public.

Anyway, I'll try to capture these items tonight and maybe send it out to you guys. My overall goal is to capter all of my Star Wars footage and compile it to DVDs in some sort of orderly fashion. Ex: Star Wars era stuff all together, Empire stuff all together, Jedi Stuff all together, then the Special Edition stuff, etc. That way Each Movie has it's own DVD(s) compilation of hype and specials from that era. The Special Editions can be grouped together since they were released back to back. So any help would be great! It would take me forever to do on my own.

Another project would be to compile as many Star Wars Related commercials into a DVD. Everyone has a copy of the original Kenner Commercials but there's also micor machines, C3P0 cerial, Power of the Force toys, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Doritos etc.

Sounds like some great stuff, Jay.

Could you turn on your Private Messages? They're off by default on this board.

In the released version there is a voice just before "It's a trap!" saying "Admiral, we have enemy ships in sector 47", which I think comes from one of his aids.

Yep that's the line, shucks! It's still a great special if not only for Mark talking about being in the Sequel trilogy which will be shooting in 2004!

OH and my PM is turned on now so you all can message me. Thanks,

Lucas talked a lot about the three trilogies in interviews given for the officially sanctioned making of ESB book. Probably one reason it will never go back in print. Someone needs to scan it someday.
Is this crawl letterboxed or squeezed to fit the tv frame? Just curious...

I have actually been wanting to suggest that myself. We need a sticky thread just for the preservation of the commercials, I think. I'd love to see a real effort made to find and capture the best copies of each one, and then archive them on DVD(s)... there's some really good and classic ones out there that are worth preserving. I have quite a few of them, mostly in file form, varying in quality from very crisp to absolutely horrible.

My personal holy grail commercial (recently provided to me finally by my buddy Curt) was the 1977 Burger Chef poster ad that featured a bunch of characters, including a couple Jawas and some Tusken Raiders. To my knowledge, it's the only appearance of Jawas and Tuskens outside of the films. I'd love to see the best copy of this commercial preserved.

Mark Hamill talks about playing a "small part in number IX as the Obi-Wan who hands Excalibur down to the new young hope" in the "Unathorized Star Wars Story." In fact, here's a sound clip.

First of all, the line was never changed. You just heard a completely different sound mix. There were always differences between the sound mixes for each Star Wars film. If you heard "I can see a lot better" at the theater, you saw it in 70mm. That line is also in the 1983 "Story of" album. This is also the sound mix that went into the Special Edition and 2004 DVD.

There's a thread here somewhere in which we list most of the differences between sound mixes.
Greedo shoots first? Not in my DVD player.

There's an old Maria Shriver interview where Mark Hamill also talks about playing Luke again in episode 9. He's wearing a horrible blue striped shirt. It's on a disc called Star Wars Rarities that Russ Dawson sent me ...

Can you email me a capture of that aide clip, Jay? ... tygerbug at yahoo.com. Would like to confirm/deny its cutness.

Yes that's the interview! Mark has a really bad greasy hairdo in it as well. I'd like to get a copy of that DVD if it's torrented, there are 3 rarities dvds that I'm currently DLing. Not sure this is one of them. What's the quality?

As for the Aid scene, apparently it's in the movie, I just never caught the line about sector 47 before, I thought all of the aid's lines were cut from the movie. The clip is in that interview if you have it in it's entirety.

I'll keep searching my tapes and let you all know if I find anything of interest. It sounds like a lot of what I have may allready be on DVD or is currently in the works.

Yeah I have tons of SW commercials, some good quality, some not so good, and it would be cool to get them all on DVD. Including what's currently out now. Maybe we can compare notes and see what we can come up with.

jaymanchu, if the star wars rarities discs you're downloading are the ones from sladinki007.net, then the Shriver/Hamill interview is the third thing on 'Rarities 1' DVD - "PM Magazine - Jedi preview - Maria Shriver interviews Mark Hamill"
Here's some stills that indicate the quality - theres some interference on the video, and a hum on the sound.
Shriver interviewing Hamill 1
Shriver interviewing Hamill 2
Shriver interviewing Hamill 3

And here's a menu shot - ocpmovie, does this look like your rarities disc?
Rarities 1 menu - page 1

Jay, on a different note, you wouldn't have a copy of the r2 and c3po anti-smoking commercial hidden amoungst your collection would you? Or does anyone else know where this can be found, as its something i've been dying to see, but am having a tough time tracking it down.

Anyway, back to the thread...

.........and there was me thinking that the Rarities disc was only good for using as a coaster for a coffee cup!!!

The disc that ocpmovie has is the same one as the screenshots supplied.

Rarities 1 and 2 are worth a look at if only for the really strange things on there.

In my opinion, Rarities 3 is not worth the bother. Firstly because so far it has been impossible to burn and secondly it is simply the Kenner ads and a few SE trailers.

See a full listing of the contents of Rarities 1 and 2 here.

4 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 6 - 2

Discuss…

That's it! My quality is about the same unfortunately. My rarities disc is different. I'll have to check out what's on it.

YES I've got this clip. I believe it's on my Holiday Special DVD. I may have it elsewhere too. I'll try to get this captured for ya. Right now I'm in the middle of rebuilding my computer so that's put my VHS captures on hold for a few days. But I should finish that up tonight and start capturing ASAP.

I just read the three Time magazine articles that came out before the three original films. I would think that Time would be somewhat reliable. Anyways, they make reference to the "three trilogies" all over the place in them. Anyways, pretty neat articles:

Star Wars: The Year's Best Movie - May 30, 1977
The Empire Strikes Back ! - May 19, 1980
Great Galloping Galaxies! - May 23,1983
