Strike Commando (1987)
A bunch of explosions, it’s-so-bad-it’s-bad. I wish I liked it but I didn’t.

Just watched Midnight Special. It was a Tim Drake and worth checking out. Kylo Ren and Uncle Owen are in it too so there’s your Star Wars connection.

Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

Shin Gojira (Godzilla: Resurgence)(2016)

Kick ass Godzilla movie. Great to see some actors from older movies show up. The film is very thought provoking and serious at it’s core and it keeps that mood through the entire film. I can’t wait for the next one from Toho.

“Arrival” (2016) 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

I just was not as impressed as I thought I was going to be from the hype and word of mouth.
I felt it was predictable and treading to closely on past original material such as “Contact” and “Interstellar”.

“Tora! Tora! Tora!” (1970) 3 1/2 out of 5 stars

Dry but well made (for it’s time) docudrama about the December 7th 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. With the model work, I kept expecting Godzilla to pop out of the sea at any moment.

I really enjoy Tora! Tora! Tora!. Much better than Pearl Harbor.

Alien vs. Predator (2004)

The acting is bad, the script is bad, the characters are bad, the effects are bad, the plot holes are bad, the music is bad, the pacing is bad, the story is bad, the mythology is bad, and the ending is bad.

Does it at least have cool fight scenes?

No?

Well then.

1/10.

The Glenn Miller Story (1954). Pure bliss. Great music.

I was asked to talk about my Top 10 Movies of 2016 on my friend’s podcast, so I had to watch some more movies from 2016 before I recorded so I wouldn’t have to have X-Men: Apocalypse or Deadpool in my list.

Green Room

Super-intense, like a season of Breaking Bad condensed into 90 minutes except that you actually want the main character to win.

Sing Street

A story of a boy who makes a band to impress a girl, with great original music and 80’s classics.

I LOVED Patrick Stewart in Green Room. The movie was fucked up coolness from start to finish.

We also watched Thoroughly Modern Millie this weekend. Wow, what a troublesome musical. There’s racism, sex trafficking, and a twist at the end that is just weird. And way too much Julie Andrews complaining about her bust size for my comfort.

Reservoir Dogs (1992) ★★★★

Fantastic! … and kind of depressing.

I decided to try and watch all of Tarantino’s movies in order, so one down.
I’m not sure when I’ll have three hours free for Pulp Fiction, though.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Tarantino has made some great movies. You can tell he loves making movies, because when he does an homage, he goes all out.

  • Reservoir Dogs
  • Pulp Fiction
  • Jackie Brown
  • From Dusk Till Dawn
  • Kill Bill
  • Death Proof (part of the GrindHouse movie)
  • Inglorious Basterds
  • Django Unchained
  • Hateful 8

Oh yes, in late 2015 my father bought a box set of all of Tarantino’s movies up until Django Unchained (which luckily was on Netflix), and I loved them all at the time. Most of them I haven’t seen since, despite owning them. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction were my favourite, though I think both Kill Bill movies are near perfection.

From Dusk Till Dawn is really, really stupid. Is that even a Tarantino movie?

Everything else he’s done I’ve really enjoyed.

Pulp Fiction was one of the movies I watched a lot in high school.

It’s not really a Tarantino movie, at least not in the same way. He wrote the screenplay and is one of the stars, but it was directed by Robert Rodriguez.

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)

I’m in the minority here, but I actually prefer this film to the first film. Yes, the story is just as bad, and the acting, characterisation and script might be even worse, but unlike the first film, I actually can watch this from beginning to end, and not get bored. The fast pacing is both a pro and con. On one hand, it means we never get attached to a character before they’re abruptly killed off in a gory, over the top fashion, but on the other hand, it means I never have the urge to turn it off in lieu of sheer boredom. I hate the film centering on teenagers, because it makes the movie feel more like a cheap slasher film than an Alien or Predator film, and all the other characters are bland and stale. My biggest issue with the film is the horrendous lighting, which makes it impossible to see anything. I get the feeling watching the action scenes that if they were filmed correctly, they’d be fun, but they are so awfully shot I can’t tell.

I do think that the Predalian (what a stupid name) does make for a unique and “cool” villain, and the main Predator (I think he’s called Wolf) is pretty awesome as well. I liked his assortment of weapons and the idea of him being a veteran. I also liked that the makers slimmed down his body to be more in line with the original Predators, rather than the bulked up Predators from the first AvP film. My biggest issue with Aliens was the Xenomorphs being weak and easily killed off, but that’s nothing compared to how they’re portrayed here. They get killed left, right and centre, like low level enemies in video games. To my utter dismay, even the untrained pizza delivery boy is able to shoot one down with ease.

So, yeah, this movie is utter garbage, but on the count of it being fun to watch, and having a few good things, I’ll give this a three out of ten.
