What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like? — Page 18

Aesthetic upgrades of visual effects are the only Special Edition changes I like. Some of the speeder shots on Hoth look bad and dated in Despecialized, so while I believe strongly in preserving the original, I also think there is value in modernizing the vfx so they look realistic and don’t take you out of the movie experience.

On the other hand, there are CGI upgrades in Star Wars and Empire that look like they were made in a different era and are out of place in the film. I cringe whenever I see the obvious computer graphics like when the Falcon is flying around Cloud City. It looks straight out of a video game cutscene and doesn’t belong in the movie.

The speeder bike chases on Endor still look great on Despecialized 2.5. I was very surprised, I thought they would have aged much more but they still look realistic to me.

What’s with all this love for the redone explosions? What’s that blast ring even supposed to be?

This. They look stupid.

What it reminds me of is when you’re a kid with crayons, and you keep adding shit to a drawing long after you’ve drawn everything, trying to make it better, but you end up with a bunch of clutter and worse off than the initial drawing.

In fact, that’s what the various SEs represent, a kid who didn’t know when to put down the crayons.

I think that the Alderaan explosion was the one most in need of an update, but the one they gave it did little to make it better. If it was just the larger explosion it would have been fine, but they gave it the praxis shockwave, which just made it look dumb.

I think it would’ve been a better idea to only add the shockwave effect to the Death Star explosion, making it more epic compared to the Alderaan explosion. Save the gimmick for the grand finale.

Did you mention the Outrider in ANH? Because the Outrider.

I was a big fan of the game.

With all the edits they did I was surprised at how they didn’t seem to update the lightsaber effects in many scenes. I don’t know much about video production but I’d think that would’ve been one of the more easy things to revise.

Agreed. While I do think the lightsaber effects in Empire and Jedi still hold up, they look absolutely terrible in the original, and with all the other stuff Lucas has changed for better or worse (but mostly worse) over the years, it’s odd that he’s never tried to fix those. Or that he never noticed how the so-called color-correction in 2004 resulted in them being completely miscolored in many shots… Like, even as a twelve-year-old I was just like “…Luke’s lightsaber was green just now. Why was it green just now.”

Thats nothing. I just converted my '92 SW tape to DVD. Obi-Wan’s lightsaber has literally no color in the cantina scene. If I squint I can somewhat detect a slight blue but other than that its just a white blade. One thing Im amazed was never fixed was the split second moments during the Ben/Vader duel when the sabers switch colors!

I have a few I enjoy in each movie. ANH- I enjoy the wide shots of Mos Eisley, it really opens up the city. There’s a few parts of it that aren’t too necessary, but the shots showing the vastness of the city are good. The clang when the trooper hits his head and the second “open the blast doors” are great. ESB- The added Wampa, some people argue that its not necessary, that it’d scarier without it, but it’s not like Jaws, where the beast is the main problem of the movie, its only in the movie for 5 minutes. The added Cloud City scenes are good. ROTJ- I actually enjoy the beak of the Sarlacc, because they also added more tentacles, and it looks more alive, before it was just a sand hole. The extra celebration scenes are cool, get so see planets celebrating the death of the Emperor. This isn’t a SE change, but I’m probably one of the few people who enjoy Vaders Nooooo. Now, the first one isn’t necessary, but I like the second one because it echoes throughout the Throne Room.

If all of this is to be read sarcastically with Mike Stoklasa’s mocking millennial/Internet reviewer voice, then I agree.
If not, I do not.
Also, how is Vaders “NOOOOO!” in ROTJ not an SE change?

Not sarcastic, and Vader never said Nooooo until the blu ray edition

So it’s not a 97 SE change but it’s still an SE change.

Author

I think he means it wasn’t an SE change because it wasn’t officially labeled an SE after 97, and the OOT was quietly swept under the rug.

I think it’s better you keep it that way. Once you learn what it is, you can’t unlearn it.

Random shower thought:

Why didn’t GL change Obi-Wan’s line…

“You can’t win, Darth…” to “You can’t win, Vader…” ?

I imagine Guinness’s Obi-Wan voice wasn’t sounding too good in 1997.
