The Evil Dead (1981) – ★★★1/2

I loved it quite a lot.

Spoiler area, I suppose:

I was liking it throughout the beginning of the film; it built atmosphere very well.

When it came to the plant-rape scene, I just felt very disturbed, and though it was an effective scene, I felt like it went on a little too long. I mean, listening to a woman scream and pant just becomes disturbing in a not-so-scary way after a little bit.

I think the film is at its best from when Ash cuts off Linda’s head to him being attacked by Scott. As the evil spirits mess with him, and he continues this descent into madness, it’s hard to tell what’s happening to him and what’s just him going insane.

I can’t wait to watch Evil Dead II now. I think the idea of it being horror-comedy rather than straight horror will fare well for it. I’ll have to wait till Friday to watch that, though.

Evil Dead II (1987) – ★★★1/2

Loved it again!

I was a little disappointed though, because it felt slightly less coherent than the first film, and it didn’t build an atmosphere about itself as well as the first film did either. I read and hear about how it’s the perfect blend of horror and comedy, and I would have to agree for the most part, but I didn’t feel it was quite there all the time.

I also felt that the opening sequence (not the narrated segment with the title card, but the recap afterwards) hindered the film. It was a little too abridged, and felt like the least coherent and most rushed part of the film. If they didn’t want to create a less-abridged remake for a recap, why didn’t they use further narration, or just do it without a recap at all and just cut into the film on the first-person-view shot rushing up to Ash in the morning, since that’s where the new story begins anyway.

Aside from my nitpicks, though, I really enjoyed it, and now I can’t watch Army of Darkness for a while because I can’t afford it yet. *sigh*

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) – ★★★★

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) – ★★★★

The two greatest western films ever made. I still can’t decide which one is truly the better film in my eyes.

The Seven-Per-cent Solution (1976)
Based on the novel by Nicholas Meyer, who more famously wrote and directed Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. Pretty interesting, fresh take on Sherlock Holmes. Star studded cast. Can get a little slow at times, but overall very enjoyable. Alan Arkin plays Sigmund Freud. Enough said.

Arrival

Film Grade: 9/10

This film was simply excellent. Amy Adams gave an oscar worthy performance in my humble opinion. The score for the film had an impressive range that could hit the emotional beats yet still create enormous tension when required. The cinematography is beautiful and captivating. The plot is clever, thought provoking and impactful. One of the finest films of the year for myself.

Man, I’m so out of it I assumed you guys were talking about this movie and I’m all like “you guys are nuts.”

They would only be nuts if they were talking about the sequel. And yes, I’m probably one of the only people one the planet who has actually seen the sequel.

Saw Doctor Strange yesterday. Wasn’t very impressed by it. Seemed like the character arced rather quickly while everything else slowed down long enough to explain everything twice.

Before that I watched Exorcist III for the first time, on Blu-ray thanks to Bingowings. I’m not a horror movie fan, but I liked the original Exorcist and I feel that this had a good amount of balance between creepy stuff and weird shit and genuinely scry bits. I haven’t watched the “Director’s Cut”, which should be an interesting experiment.

Doctor Strange (2016)

What an unlikable arrogant character. Very predictable and boring.

Had a couple weeks of holidays and tried to watch as many films as I could, here’s a rough ranking with some thoughts:

Excellent:

Interstellar (Wow, what an experience!)
Persona (Utterly captivating)
Shutter Island (Throws you around in the best possible way, such great style too)

Great:

Platoon (Great characters, superb action which never appears contrived)
Ex Machina (Concise and smart. Didn’t try to overstretch itself)
LOTR: The Two Towers (Watched this in two sittings, the second sitting really dragged and the silliness stuck out more than I remember. FOTR and the first half of TTT were just as amazing as I remember though).
Robocop (1987) (Has violence ever been so fun? Much better than I thought, terrific practical effects)
Gattaca (Nice atmosphere, love the dreamy vibe and characters)

Good:

Sicario (Phenomenal first half, only solid second)
Rear Window (Always interesting, love that it takes place in a single location)
Taxi Driver (Was constantly interrupted while watching and finished after 3 hours, need a second watch to properly appreciate)
Macbeth (Visually impressive, dialog very difficult to literally hear)
Bronson (Only watched because it was a NWR film and well, it was good – just didn’t enjoy Bronson as a character very much, you can still see NWR in it though)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) (As a fan of the book, this was a little disappointing. It’s not bad, just half-baked compared to the book. The things they did tweak though were the best parts)

Just decent:

13 Assassins (Some good parts but ultimately felt like watching a video game)
Escape From New York (Kinda clunky and flat. It’s the perfect movie for an 8 year old but content wise it’s not a kids film?)
POTC: On Stranger Tides (Good action, fun, but nothing special)

Not good:

The Princess Diaries 2 (I didn’t hate myself while watching but there was no shortage of huge eye roll moments)

Comedy: (It never feels right to compare serious films with comedies…)

Attack of the Ridiculous (Lives up the first, practically non-stop laughs – great work Frink! Favorite moments - The Clones arrive at Geonosis, Obi-Wan and Jango’s Asteroid fight and Anakin and Padme’s relationship is taken…“further”)

Minority Report

There’s really no reason why I haven’t seen it until this point, but I figured I would love it as it combines a lot of my favorite things (time paradoxes, Speilberg, Tom Cruise action film). However, I found it uneven tonally, to the point of distraction. I could understand having funny scenes, but there were gags just in the middle of things that threw me right off. I liked it well enough, but had it taken itself a bit more seriously I would have liked it even more.

3/5

Am I alone in this?

I haven’t seen it in quite a while but I remember liking it enough to give it a 4/5. The way you describe it sounds like it could be easily fixable via a fanedit.
