Those look really nice! The extra brightness makes everything really pop. It looks like the shadows are rather crushed though, and some gradients have shifted too green. But overall it’s a big improvement.

UnitéD2 said:

I like it too ! Perhaps it deserves to be a little less contrasty though.

Shuggy said:

Wow. That’s a huge improvement. The younglings shot is gorgeous.

I would add that I too find the look a little dark for my tastes - the colours seem a bit “dirty” to me - but kudos all the same.

Ryan-SWI said:

I think the changes help some things pop, but there’s a lot of lost detail in there.

There’s also some over-exposure in a couple of the scenes because of the altercations, specifically the ‘sand’ scene.

The biggest issue with the OT BDs (outside the obvious altercations) were the crushed blacks and loss of fine detail as a result, I fear a similar case here. I do quite a bit of professional editing and that’s just my opinion, but I think you could achieve the same ‘look’ you’re going for without abusing the contrast and exposure quite so much.

I hope I don’t come off as overly negative or snarky, just giving my opinion!

You did a good job color correcting things to your apparent liking, I’m just commenting on some more technical details (:

I’ve taken all critiques into account and matched the contrast better to what’s present on the discs. I’ve been attempting exports of the film with a few failed outputs, but at the moment I am waiting on a 4TB drive to arrive in the mail because I’m all out of space. (Who knew you could fill lots of TeraBytes just by being a part of these forums:P) When I get it exported I’ll upload it to the Spleen and start a new thread to avoid confusion in this one.

From there you can watch it and provide further input if you’d like, and I’ve already made note of some issues like ghosting from moving objects, but this correction is merely a single grade over the entire film so that I can watch it and not cringe. In the future I expect to do entire scene by scene corrections but for now this is good enough for me.

Czech Episode III 35mm Flat Trailer

Czech Episode I 35mm Scope Trailer

Czech Episode II 35mm Scope Trailer 2

Czech Episode III 35mm Flat Trailer 2

These are great sources, and I’ve had them bookmarked since they were posted. I might inquire about the source file from Rob, instead of settling for a YouTube compression, as they will be great for a scene by scene correction in the future! My current single-grade correction is not based on any sources–just an intuitive “repainting” of the colors built on some custom film looks.

Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP)

As I, and many of you, have been following this thread for a while, there seems to have been a falloff from this project–and lack of progress (from my own perspective). So to remedy that, I’ve spent a while on my own designing some custom film looks for the prequel films.

Here’s are some frames from Attack of the Clones. As it has the worst color out of any Star Wars film I thought I should post these first… for the starting source I used the HD reconstruction of the DVD as the Blu-ray has a green tint and is very smooth, lacking texture. Below each are their frame comparisons. Enjoy!

kk650's Regraded Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi V2 (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray)
Time

I am very fond of the grade for The Last Jedi. It is insanely better than the infamous pink flesh tones of The Force Awakens, and the punchy reds in The Last Jedi aren’t magenta either. I don’t mind the golden “tint” to the film, a lot of the movie takes place during sunsets or while explosions are occurring or host lush golden light fixtures in Canto Bight. It fits the vibe, and personally, retracting that aspect degrades the image. Having its own style is part of the filmmaking process

Info: Interstellar - ColorMatching BluRay to 70mm

I’ve been planning on buying the 4K copy of Interstellar. I know MakeMKV has the ability to rip some 4K discs and I have a blu-ray drive in my computer that is supported in the list. Has anyone compared the color timing with the normal blu-ray? I figure once I pick up the 4K version I will make it my mission to complete this project

Lately I’ve tinkered with few “de-tealized” projects, and learned some new techniques; so, I’ve decided to give Interstellar a go…

The “inspired by 70mm” is a color grading made in Avisynth - no LUTs or color matching; I could make it even closer to 70mm, but in that case there would be white clipping, so I’ve chosen the best compromise, and it works well, it seems:

take a look at the comparison for the whole movie:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/216927

I’ve also compared it to the camrip - that is faaar to be considered a color reference; indeed, “as is”, it’s different (a lot) from BD and regrade; when adjusted (saturation lowered, magenta blanket removed, levels tweaked), it resemble sometimes the BD, sometimes the regrade, sometimes neither… and it happens also for subsequent shots - I suspect the autowhite and/or autogain are involved. But the fact that often is closer to the regrade than the BD, and that some members remembers (pun intended!) the colors in the theater to be closer to the 70mm scan may means it “could” be “right” - somehow…

I’m perfectly aware that it almost never happen that a single regrade setting works for a whole movie, but in this case it seems to work; still to watch it all, but I’ve tested few shots, and they look good; preparing a low def version and I’ll watch it in the next few hours, then I’ll write my conclusions.

This is really cool. I would love to see more of your “de-tealized” workflow I guess you could call it. It does resemble my 70mm cell A LOT, though seeing it’s application to the whole film does make lots of scenes look unnatural. Scene by scene is obviously ideal, and if you can nail down a workflow we can work together and get this thing done pretty soon. I have a collection of around 20 film cells I downloaded all over the internet that ranges throughout the film. They would be okay references.

Seeing as how Dunkirk just came out (Saw it on 35mm planning for 70mm) this would be a good project to continue working on.

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)
Time

Here are some covers to smooth things over

vexedmedia said:

I’ve been holding on to these covers for quite some time now (about 8 months) and I’ve decided it’s time to let them go.

Based on the Criterion layout, these covers present the Despecialized project without cluttering the front artwork. I went with striking images and embellished them for a unique look. These are inspired by JMoomer’s previous designs, which I became obsessed with and decided to work on some originals. This is a set with a theme, and I have more sets designed with the same layout that have different themes (those will be posted at a later date so look out for further posts)

The covers are made for Criterion Single Disc Cases and are FREE TO DOWNLOAD AND PRINT FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY, which I would greatly enjoy seeing photos of.

! PLEASE KEEP THESE IMAGES OFF OTHER SITES !

I made these for the forum members here and I don’t want to find them anywhere else. If I see them pop up on eBay or other forums, the designs will be pulled and I won’t post any more of the many I’ve made.

However, if you would like a set made for you, I am offering to do so.

** IF YOU’RE READING THIS PASSED JULY 4TH IT’S ENDED

The trilogy set will be 40$, 15$ each individually, all in Criterion cases and with an inside print unique to each film as well.

NO DISCS INCLUDED!

those you will have to handle yourself. Shipping only to United States for now. This is a timed production. From now until the 4th of July, you can PM me if interested. Expected delivery by August 1st.

Hope you enjoy the designs and the coming covers.

Ronwlim,

We understand and no need to explain or to justify your prices. Sharing your files with everybody was more than generous.

Believe me, if I was in this for the money, I could keep making these. I stopped at the initial five I offered 18 months ago. I have a wait list of 8 names if I ever decided to make more.

DIY! It’s the most satisfying. Google how to burn discs and make your own box. There are so many tutorials on methods on YouTube.

-Ron

I can attest. It was smart to price them as such because I inquired those 18 months ago and it deterred me enough lol. Inevitably I designed and learned to print my own covers and discs as well, and I am very pleased with that. It has led me down a path of creating custom blu-ray covers for most of the films I own to fit in uniform Criterion cases. If I had just let someone else do everything for me I wouldn’t be as satisfied. I’ve even looked into making custom menus because I just want something different than the excellent work njvc has already done. And that’s the point of making your own set, is the unique quality and personal responsibility. Take pride in doing things yourself, there’s nothing like learning something new!

Okay changing those Luma values for Tarkin’s skin does a hell of a lot for this shot! There’s so much more depth between Tarkin and the background compared to the flat look of Despecialized. Fantastic work as always!

Here are some other interesting comparisons between the trailer and BluRay to hold you over.

Trailer
(notice the more yellow skintones, and hair in the trailer. Has a slight green hue which they pulled out for the BluRay)

Of course trailer colors are never final, I don’t believe the final film looked EXACTLY as the trailer does but it presents the obvious fact that the BluRay does not represent what was played in theaters.

For your viewing pleasure

I took this frame from the BluRay:

…and this 70mm cell I found:

…and matched the BluRay to it to result in something wonderful!

The cell has a slightly warmer tone. Do you like the warmer tone? I kept with the cooler whites but either I’m okay with!

It looks great!

I wonder if the LUT works well also with other scenes; may you post some examples?

I’m sure that a fully corrected version of the film will have to be done on a scene by scene basis. I plan on using images of the 70mm frames people received with their Blu-Ray copies as a reference for each of the scenes. If you would like to help me hunt as many images down of the 70mm frames that would most helpful (make sure it’s a reasonably large image). You can PM me what you find or paste links here I suppose (I want to refrain from endless posts of images here) and that will save me the trouble of searching everything myself.

For the moment I will apply the LUT to other scenes and see what that looks like, but I don’t think it will serve other scenes quite the same.

Looks like it will be Resilio Sync, just trialling it with a small group at the moment to see how well it works.

Here are a few seconds though, would like feedback on if any problems have been introduced during the cleanup.

Looks absolutely fantastic. The Grindhouse LUT may not be far off from what this scan needs for CC. I am very pleased with these results!

I have to agree. This is for sure the best I’ve seen of reel1. I opened the sample and the grindhouse on separate monitors and had them playing at the same time. In a good number of shots the grain is distracting in the grindhouse, whereas it appears very pleasant or almost non-detectable in this sample! Specifically the scene right after Luke is in the bacta tank (where his sister kisses him;)) the sample really shines! Definitely worth the grading effort and without a doubt worth a cleanup! The gate weave is much less of an offender while watching as well, and the fact that this is cropped less than the grindhouse leaves room for adjustment which I like!

Keep it up poita

Info: Toy Story on 35mm, and other early Pixar films for that matter...
Time

Looking through the comparison pictures of the Viewfinder frames and Bluray frames (found here: Toy Story View-Master Comparison) a couple stood out to me as being very different in a bad way. The frame of Woody peering over Andy’s bed with Buzz’s legs in the foreground looks very vivid and heroic in the Viewfinder frame, yet milky and warm on the Bluray.
Viewfinder
Bluray
The most shocking of the comparisons is the frame of Woody shining the flashlight upon the Baby-doll-spider in Sid’s room. The Viewfinder frame reminds me instantly of how terrifying I remember that scene being as a kid. It presents the horrific monster of Sid’s creation with stark contrast, the room being dark and the flashlight almost overblown. Imagine what this would look like in a dark theater.
Viewfinder
Bluray
However in the Bluray frame, the contrast is lost to an almost completely illuminated background with the flashlight not doing much to call attention to the Toy we can already see.

I’ve ColorMatched the Bluray to the Viewfinder and added grain to match the feeling that the Viewfinder creates.

Did a little lurking and found this topic. Toy Story was a favorite film of mine as a kid, and given recent interest with DrDre’s tools and scan preservation something like this intrigues me greatly. Since there hasn’t been any sort of closure or resolution to this topic, any chance a few good members would like to revisit this? As long as sources can be voted as properly color-timed, I’ll go through the whole film and match the colors myself. I’d just hate to see this topic slid under Andy’s bed and never to see the light of day again.

Due to er… new developments over on the Legacy Edition Site, I’ve decided I’m going to take this project underground for a while. Work will continue as normal, just not so publicly.

I’m not really sure if projects like this one will help or hinder Mike’s quest, but just in case it might do the latter, perhaps we should let this topic slide down the list and off the front page for a while…

what happened?

Nothing bad. Quite the opposite in fact. But I don’t know how much to say…

is it an official release is that what it is if not then why are you being so cryptic?

LOL… Willrob wants the thread to fade but made it so cryptic we’re going to keep bouncing this sucker all night. I checked the legacy website… not seeing any updates. (Though I’ve said that Will I’ll try to not boost the thread again.)

Yup.
