Solo: A Colorful 80's Version (* on hiatus *)
Time

There seems to be a decent LUT for 5247, maybe try it out and see how it fares. Or I just might myself.

I very much like the direction it’s heading, a pop feel with vibrant colors. I think Lando’s outfit in the film is a great place to look for that inspiration haha.

EDIT: I think focusing on the primary colors and maybe shifting colors to align more with the primaries, would really complement the elements already in the film nicely! Red (the Maw, Crimson Dawn), Yellow (Kessel, Lando clothes), and Blue (Vandor, Han’s stolen landspeeder, hyperspace).

As for the wide shot of the stormtroopers and “the gang” in the speeder, (I’ve always loved this shot for some reason) this is almost exactly what it looks like in the reference:

Here’s another quick correction:

to pink

Yeah, it could use a little more work:

I like both of these in their own way. Definitely some different hues and curves in respective areas, Dre’s highlights might be pushed a little high without also adjusting the lower end. Evident on the middle Stormtrooper and wall corner. Just a thought
Also some unappealing pink in the armor

In the meantime, there is a spin off project called “The Skywalker Edition” that uses 4K77 as a jumping off point and may be closer to what you had in mind:

I’m gonna watch the preview and see what it looks like. The screenshot has nice details but is slightly too green and the whites are crushed. But I suspect this is a case of conversion between 16-235 and 0-255 that has caused it. It’s also more cropped, but that’s understandable if it’s based on more sources.

If I do the same kind of fix to that shot from 4K77, (Balance the white point but keep the mid balance and alter the gamma a bit) it comes out like this:

Actually, I think a lot of detail is missing in that shot, and it’s overall too bright, and too yellow in my view. If I had to wager a guess, I would go with something like this:

Yeah the punchy yellow/green desert is too much. I like this toned down look

So here’s the clip, it’s rendered at 50mbps x264 at 4K. Obviously this is streaming level quality appropriate for youtube and not UHD bluray quality but that should be fine for just a preview.

Looks much more appealing and film natural than your early concepts. I love how you managed to stick with the original timing but with a less video game aesthetic. The lightsabers always turn out weird in my experience. The deep blue doesn’t echo it’s intended look but it’s hard to fix. I’ve found that isolating the lightsabers in some way and using a transfer mode on top of the emulation helps add the luminance back to it.

4k77 - shot by shot color grading (a WIP)

" Color and Light

We tend to think of objects as having fixed colors—an apple, for example, is red. In reality, an object’s appearance results from the way it reflects the particular light that is falling on it. Under white light, the apple appears red because it tends to reflect light in the red portion of the spectrum and absorb light of other wavelengths. If a filter is used to remove red from the light source, the apple reflects very little light and appears black. The fact that the color makeup of light can change, means that shifts can occur in the color appearance of objects illuminated by it. Within limits, the brain compensates for these changes in color appearance and we see things as we expect them to appear. But the changes are there nonetheless and can affect the way people respond to objects and environments. "

Growing up with the films, we so easily associate how scenes look based on their brief appearance. We all understand that the Tantive is white, and the death star is gray, and space is black…but when you start to stare at frames for hours weeks and years the subtleties become glaring. In my understanding, Dr.Dre is and has been among the top frame-starers in existence. He welcomes the subtleties as an old friend and constant nuisance. (sips tea)

Woof.

People say they want freedom of choice, but they really want freedom from choice. Too many options make it harder to decide–but I like each in their own way 😦 It’s like picking one child over the others, It’s just not right.

If only you could wrap it up into one single video file that has a dropdown for “Look” which applies different LUTs on top–that would be revolutionary!

Thanks poita!

It’s really silly how the 97 SE print looks better in every way from the 77 IB Tech in that shot, other than the glaring green sabre.

I beg to differ.

I found the reference in one of my books:
"Massassi hangar, interior: “Thet had one complete X-Wing, a Y-Wing and some bits and pieces, painted ships. SO I took the plate, reduced it, and then put it down in the left centre; then I took the same plate, reduced it even more, and put it in the background on the right hand side of the frame; then I painted around it, just lots of little lights in the back, a couple of shapes, a few hoses hanging down. Youd be amazed how little is on that painting”

What book?

Found some approx. frames and did some quick matching using Dr.Dre’s ColorMatch tool. Matched the scan to both 4K77 and the Special Edition Projected Color Ref. with a little contrast adjustment. Here are the results:

4K77 match

I then used the colormatching results and Neverar’s Technicolor Recreation as color references and made a correction for the scan that’s most likely innacurate, but derives from good intention–and boy is this thing CLEAN. Thank you poita!
