STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

First time trying to post an image, so please forgive me if it takes a few attempts. I found this concept art for DS1 (Episode III) that I found interesting. I thought that visually it was different enough to separate itself from DS1 (as seen in Episode IV) while still eventually being in the same class of super weapon. Being in an early stage it also helps quell the argument that the Empire couldn’t have built it in the allotted time.

DS2

I’m not sure if there’s appetite to replace the iconic DS2 silhouette, but thought that it was at least worth considering.

I think it would be a bad idea to mess with the silhouette, but since we’ve never seen the reverse side of it, there’s a lot of room for creativity there, and that image you posted could still serve as inspiration for additional shots. The DS2 could still be mostly hollow for all we know - only the reactor and the path to it are known to be closed in.

Noticed fairly large continuity error for the first time. At the Sarlacc pit, the skiff that Lando, Han, Chewie, etc. were on was heavily damaged and listing after being hit by several blasts. Just a few short moments later, Luke and Leia swing down to an undamaged and perfectly level skiff.

Was it the same skiff? I’ll need to re-watch that sequence but I thought there were two.

Boba Fett’s lines in ROTJ are precisely:

“Ugh. What the? Argh. Ugh. Argh.”

Don’t forget his two Aaaaagh! lines - once when flying uncontrolled towards the Sail Barge, then again when the AT-ST driver is thrown off the top of his vehicle by the mighty Chewbacca. Presumably out of sympathy for the poor guy.

I’ve assumed Ackbar is giving the mark to the capital ships, with Lando giving the mark to the fighters.

Admiral Ackbar says “prepare to jump to hyperspace on my mark”, and Lando answers “all right, stand by”. And then he jumps into hyperspace!

He says, “All craft, prepare to jump into hyperspace on my mark”.

There is a trilling beeping noise right before Lando hits the lever. I always assumed that was the “mark” broadcast to all ships.

Is anyone else bothered by the carbonite thawing? I’m not just talking about the effects, but also the body mold imprint that Harrison Ford fell out of. I always felt that it wasn’t very form fitting and that the “hole” was too large for Harrison. When all parts are taken as a whole, I don’t feel that the scene has aged particularly well.

That scene bothers me more because Boushh (Leia) lets Han fall out of the encasement straight onto the hard floor. I guess one could rationalize it by saying he needed a solid jolt to start his heart again, but it still seems rather… brutal.

Since Ady is replacing the Tydirium with a cargo ship, how about one that is much bigger. Then it could hold a couple hundred rebel troopers. These could be the troops that defeat the imperial ground forces with just a little help from the ewoks.

It would be cool to see a shot of the rebel troops on route to endor strapped in like the drop ship scene from Aliens.

“We have stolen a small Imperial shuttle.”

I was sad to see that the PT:R is no more, but I’ll be extremely keen to see what Any had in mind for it. I don’t want to put any pressure on him to change his mind; we should be more than grateful if he decided to pack it in now, and we’re still going to get two more (effectively) Revisiteds yet. But I do have an idea.

The Revisited project has become a collaborative project already; probably the biggest of all fan-edits in this regard by a considerable margin. I wonder if Ady might consider handing off the reins to someone else (005, perhaps? Ming?) to coordinate a group effort to realise his vision — after ROTJ:R and A:R:SE are finished, of course. I believe a sanctioned PT:R, “executive produced” if you like by Ady and following his plans and outlines (and with his definitive say to resolve disputes if necessary), would be much more likely to be successful than a bunch of competing solo attempts to match his work. I think we all underestimate how much work he’s put into this project, but I think together we might be able to get it done.

I’m on the other side of the world from most of the people here; my editing skills are extremely basic and I’ve no experience with VFX; my contribution would have to be in the area of planning and design. But I’d be eager to put my hand up as part of a group effort, if Adywan does decide to pass the lightsabre on.

My 2 cents:

Fan edits can and will continue, and I’d like to think Ady has considerably raised the bar quality-wise and other editors will take inspiration from him. However “Revisited” is Ady’s personal saga (notwithstanding the significant contributions of others) and, while the idea of a future collaborative edit with the many talented people in this forum is quite exciting, it should not be associated with the name “Revisited”.

Just thought I’d bring this across from the unofficial REVISITED suggestion thread.

I’ve read numerous posts in regards to removing Boba Fett from Jabba’s Palace during Jedi. While I understand the reasoning for this, I think it would be more interesting if he was their waiting for Luke to attempt a rescue Han.

After Luke arrives, Boba Fett can inform Vader that Luke is at Jabba’s Palace. I would probably place this after Luke has killed the Rancor, but before him and Han are reunited:

INT. DEATHSTAR. VADERS CHAMBERS

VADER sits in his mediation chamber. BOBA FETT appears on the view screen.

VADER:
What is it, bounty hunter.

FETT:
Skywalker is here.

VADER:
See to it that he remains there.

Vader leaves the Death Star aboard his shuttle.

Then I would place this after the barge explosion and falcon/ x-wing leaving Tatooine:

Vader can then arrive and enter through the main gates of the palace (mirroring Lukes entrance), however he snaps the necks of the guards using the force, and finds the palace practically empty. This would be after the barge explodes and skiff zooms away…

To me ROTJ has always felt a like a film of two somewhat disconnected halves, I think this would go a long way to remedying that.

Another idea for ROTJ would be to have C-3PO inform Han that the Ewoks were already preparing an assault on the Imperial base, therefore their weapons and traps are justified (I know this is something that bothers a lot of people.)

That sounds very interesting and I understand the reasoning behind it. Now, how feasible that is to implement, that would help tie it all in. Also it flows with Vader’s drive of seeking out Luke, like in ESB.

Well, Temuera Morrison is still alive if you need to record that line.

I’ll get my coat.

A quick suggestion for ROTJ:R, maybe throw in a reference to Thrawn in the background displays or see if you can add the Rebel’s Ghost ship in the Battle of Endor. It would be quite a treat for fans of Star Wars Rebels. ESB:R is a masterpiece. Wishing you all the best on ROTJ:R Ady!

Chopper is already in ESB:R 😉

Found him. Nice one 😃

More of a misunderstanding than a misconception, but I used to think “There is another” referred to Darth Vader, because he ultimately is the one who defeats the emperor and I thought Yoda had the foresight to see this. Mind you I was very young at the time and the only prequel that had yet been released was TPM. Looking back, my misunderstanding sounds like something GL would ret-con into being “his original intention” nowadays.

Bingowings said:

I think this is just evidence of you young Darth Lucas being more insightful than middle-aged George Lucas.
Using this interpretation you can short cut the originally intended sister plot to have ROTJ as the ‘final’ episode without the need to make Leia Luke’s sister.

Yeah, I prefer that over “Oh, it was your sister. We could have used her if you failed. No big deal.”

In the scene when Luke is calling out to Leia I took it that the reason she was able to hear him was because deep down it was Luke who she truly loved not Han.

It might have been the original intention of the creative crew at that time, since Han was later supposed to die in EpVI and Luke was supposed to go looking for his sister who is not Leia.

Nah, it’s clearly meant to be through the force. “True love” doesn’t enable telepathic communication. And Han and Leia just confessed their love for one another. Luke’s outta that picture. Actually, she never shows any romantic interest in Luke in the films. ROTJ stupidly blurs this line by making Han and Leia forget their time together during entire previous movie, but at the end of ESB it’s clear when this issue stands.

???

She kisses Luke in ESB. It’s obvious to you or me that it’s just to get a rise out of Han, but not necessarily so obvious to a kid, and Luke seems fairly pleased by it all.

How does ROTJ blur that line? Early in ROTJ: “Someone who loves you” and then later “I love you”, “I know”. Do you mean Han’s response when Leia senses Luke after the Death Star is destroyed?

After a second viewing I now realise what bothered me about the Emperor scene. When viewed side-on the Emperor looks like he is mostly a single still frame, animated by the static and jitter of the poor signal. It’s most apparent in the final shot where he appears frozen with his mouth open for a few seconds before closing it towards the end.

It’s still a great improvement over the blu-ray version where they re-shot Ian McDiarmid looking nothing like the ROTJ Emperor who apears only months later in ‘Retun’.

Most definitely! Ian McDiarmid looked like he had just walked off the set of Revenge of the Sith. Funny that.

So on the Blu-ray release, one of the better changes (in my opinion) was that George Lucas went back and adjusted the line so that Palpatine says, “The son of Anakin Skywalker must not become a Jedi.” Makes this make so much more sense.

Adywan changed the line back to the original — why? I actually preferred the version on the Blu-ray release, and I think new viewers to The Empire Strikes Back would appreciate it as well. It is a confusing line.

I changed nothing there. He still says “The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi” on the Blu-Ray release

Hopefully this clears things up a bit (changes in italics)

One thing I’m not a fan of is a line that was changed in the hologram scene with the Emperor.

On the original (pre-Special Edition), Palpatine says, “The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi.” This line was a little confusing to viewers because he had just got done saying, “We have a new enemy: Luke Skywalker.” It made me (and others) think that Palpatine was talking about the son of Luke Skywalker… like, what?

So on the Blu-ray release, one of the better changes (in my opinion) was that George Lucas went back and adjusted the line so that Palpatine says, “The son of Anakin Skywalker must not become a Jedi.” Makes this make so much more sense.

I didn’t find it confusing. Luke’s father had already been mentioned in ANH, and it had been established that Vader and Skywalker senior had an acrimonious history. I actually liked that in Revisited Palpatine now says “YOUNG Skywalker”, making it more clear there are young and old Skywalkers.

Prior to the DVD edition, the name “Anakin” isn’t mentioned until Return of the Jedi (not counting the prequels, of course).

It sets things up nicely for the big reveal towards the end of ESB.

Forgive me if I sound crazy about this, I swear I’m not lol. I remember a couple years ago watching breath smoke test for the the first few minutes of dialogue on Hoth. I thought it was a cool new effect and added a sense of coldness to Hoth. It was on Youtube. I assume it got taken down due to copyright. I was expecting when first watching ESB:R then nothing. So I was just wondering if anyone know’s why this didn’t make the cut, or maybe it was for another fan edit ? Other then that it was amazing through and through. 9 years of work defiantly paid off and it showed.

There were other effects that didn’t make it to the final cut; the blue and red lightsaber glows on Luke’s face were also left out.

See the effect on the Trailer here, at 0:27 and 0:38

I’ve finally had a chance to watch the whole thing right through, and love all the changes that I’ve noticed so far (even the animated Ion Cannon I mentioned above looked good if a little confusing). The whole movie just seems to flow so much better now, and the effects are such that it could have been released this decade.

So many subtle changes - the underside of Cloud City speeding by overhead when Lando closes the Falcon hatch, the bottom part of the door raising in front of Artoo, putting a blaster in Han’s hand inside the “asteroid” (take that, Steven Spielberg).

The un-cropped cockpit shots look great. I don’t know how you managed that - did you splice in material from a restored negative?

I have seen people complaining about the blue tint being removed from Hoth (as if it were there originally!), but I really like that you slowly add it back as night falls when Luke and Han are out in it.

One of the biggest visual changes that stuck out for me was the adding of coloured lights to ships, particularly the large yellow lights on the Star Destroyers around the docking bays. When viewed from beneath the lights really make the ships, otherwise mostly just gray triangles from this angle, a lot more interesting.

Question about the new shot with the rebel transports taking off.

I noticed that the ION Canon is animated in the background and I know this shot changed a bit from what you first showed us ages ago. It’s got my wondering why it is animated?

It got me thinking things like is the laser bolt missing and then I thought, nah perhaps too early to fire.

I’m not really saying it’s a mistake or anything but I am really curious about this it seems like you had something planned and changed your plans or something!

The cannon is moving into position to provide cover fire for the last transports. It may have to shut down to recharge or maybe it puts the actual cannon away to camouflage itself from attack.

I noticed this too and thought it odd. We never see Ion Control, but by this point in the film the control room that had previously given the “fire” order was evacuated and the power generator had been destroyed. If the ion cannon was still operating under those conditions it must have had its own independent power source and been firing blind.

I’m not saying that it couldn’t happen, it just never occurred to me that it might.

Ady has said that the changes in ESB:R are far too numerous for a pop-up to keep up with. I do think there will be a comparison image gallery. If Ady doesn’t make it, I’m pretty sure someone (005?) will.

Ah yes, good point. It’s sometimes all too easy to lose sight of just how big this project is. An image gallery would make a good viewing companion.
