Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

So wait, is Star Wars really the Saga of Palpatine? %^%&& Disney in their #@4%^!!!

One hundred percent. This isn’t the Skywalker saga, it’s the Palpatine saga. He’s the only character to be continuously present in all eras of this story and is also the only one that actually succeeds in some of his efforts.

But Rey is a Skywalker now. That was the message I thought came across at the end. Family is not just blood. Adoption and all that.

Interesting you should ask that.
First of all Temuera Morrison, who plays the clones in the prequels, is not Australian. He is New Zealand born and plays them with a New Zealander accent.
On the other hand, Dee Bradley Baker, who plays the clones in the clone wars, is American but plays the clones with a fake impression of a somewhat incorrect Australian accent. This is probably what confuses many people but it never bothered me too much since I love the clone wars and the clones in it!
Although I probably would’ve liked a little more consistency between the two. I also don’t really like the idea of an American impersonating Aussies so bizarrely.

Exactly. As kiwis, we found Temuera (or Doctor Ropata as we know him) a little jarring at first in the SW universe. And amusingly jarring again when the clones moved from Tem’s voice (NZ accent) to Dee’s (fake Australian accent), as if the two were comparable. I suspect it wouldn’t have been a problem for most of their target audience (US/UK) as they’re less likely to pick up on the difference. Just like we can’t really tell the difference between US and Canadian accents.

“If you watch ESB and ROTJ back-to-back its actually quite jarring to hear the US accent from an Imperial officer right at the start of the film - in ESB the British accent was the voice of the Empire’s officer class and it gave the Empire a certain haughty aristocracy that worked very well.”

As an Australian, I barely notice the contrast between the American and British accents, they just all sound equally foreign to me compared to the Aussie accents I hear everyday so I have personally never considered this a continuity error! 😊

But, as an Australian, what do you think about the clones changing accents between the movies and the animated series? 😃

Lower-ranking Imperial officers were generally cast with American accents; they just didn’t really show up in ESB

ESB gives us the classic “Skah Wahlker has jus’ landed muh Lord”
Sounds like a redneck from my neck of the woods.
I dunno if I agree with your “lower ranking” idea, but.

Also, “Captain, Lord Vader demands an update on the pursoot”

OK, I feel like this has been suggested or might even have been one of Ady original points but, how about making the work on the DSII look more active. Like flickering blue-white lights like wielding and small specs hovering around working on the hull.

And those same specks fleeing when the place starts falling apart. For example, during Luke’s escape.

Isn’t there an establishing shot at some point that suggests the emperor’s throne room is at the top of a tower somewhere along the surface of the Death Star?

Yes, they are definitely in a tall tower on the surface. What is not certain is exactly where on the surface this is.

LOCATION OF THE EMPERORS TOWER:
Having the tower in some non descript place on the Death Star felt out of place in JEDI. If the man is going to create a “high tower” to gloat over his enemies, I would imagine he would pick a place where he could not only see the battle with the most clarity, but also a place that would be highly protected. What if the Emperor’s tower was at the center of the laser dish array? Imagine the panic on Luke’s face (and our own) if you could see either the beams or even just the green of the beams outside the Emperor’s window as Luke fought Vader (so he/we are constantly reminded of the short amount of time Luke has to stop the Emperor).

Isn’t it just at the north pole of the DSII? That’s not exactly nondescript.

The movie does nothing to convey this, unfortunately.

The Emperor’s gesture when he points upwards to the sanctuary moon, and Luke’s following gaze, suggest they are well south of the North Pole and probably on the Southern hemisphere. Unless gravity on the tower is backwards and they’re actually standing on the “ceiling”. The lights on the elevator do hint at it traveling “up” to that room though.

(In moviemaking parlance based on how its presented; Luke’s being real murderous in reality.)

Yeah. The music during that scene is very heroic, but if you think about it, him threatening Jabba with death, and then killing all of his minions doesn’t exactly scream “the Jedi way”. But I think it serves the story.

Eh, it didn’t look to me like a murderous rampage. It was set up as an Errol Flynn swashbuckling pirate ship rescue. Jabba and his minions were immediate threats to Luke and his friends.

Anybody else hoping Ady will re-think giving Boba a “definitive death”?
Unlike the changes to SW & ESB, this is one that will force a change in the viewers EU. In the original, it’s easy to imagine Bobba surviving (as many do), but by giving him his fathers head chop ( I believe the plan is to use footage from AOTC), it’s over.
Also, if you’re a saga fan, both Boba Jong and Boba Fett will receive the exact same death.
I’m not even a big Boba Fett fan, but this idea just sits wrong with me.
I think I’ve said this before, but I’m hoping this is the reverse of “No AT-ST’s in ESB:R”.

Not sure where you got that this is the way he is going to die ( and i certainly wouldn’t reuse footage from AOTC even if i did decide to kill him off that way). A real bugbear of mine is the resurrection of dead characters( Boba surviving the Sarlaac, Maul surviving being cut in half, the Emperor returning as a damn clone etc). It cheapens their death if you just bring them back just because they are a popular character. Bringing a character back as a force ghost is a different matter entirely though as this isn’t really bringing them back to life. Boba was nothing more than a throw away character that the fans inflated his importance. I really don’t care what the EU has said or done as i have stated many times, the EU does not exist in relation to the Revisited Saga. Boba is going to die and there will be no doubt that he is dead in ROTJ:R. How this is going to happen? Well, that hasn’t been fully decided just yet.

**Thunderous applause**

To me it is pretty clear a not insignificant time has passed between TESB and ROTJ just based on Luke alone. I can’t remember but is it even known to any of the rebel characters where Han has been taken? I can’t recall a time in TESB where any of them would learn about this, so on top of the rebel forces needing to regroup and get themselves in order again after the evacuation from Hoth, the gang also had to try and find out which system, planet and group had Han after probably initially presuming the Empire to have him.

The last scene of ESB:

LUKE
(into comlink)
I’ll meet you at the rendezvous
point on… Tatooine.

Other than that, I agree that a decent amount of time has passed between the two films. Luke is very different.

February 2019 Update: Shoots & Scams-

That sucks. Sorry you have to deal with all that crap when you’re just trying to do something for yourself and the fan community. I’m more excited for this project than I am any upcoming Disney Star Wars movie. I really appreciate you sticking with it.

Hear, hear. Time for another donation I think.

Will Ady name and shame the scammer so others don’t get caught out?

As long as you have this out by June I’ll be fine.

Hi, adywan

During the Sarlaac Pit scene when Han is aiming the blaster at the Sarlaac’s tentacle around Lando’s leg, will you be keeping Han’s original line “It’s alright, trust me” or the SE “It’s alright, I can see a lot better”?

As a suggestion, I would say using the original one.

If this is up for discussion then I agree. The original line is building their relationship again after the betrayal at Cloud City while the SE line is making a joke during a moment of dramatic seriousness, deflating the tension as we wait to see if he will shoot the Sarlacc or Lando.

IIRC that “I can see a lot better” line was on the read-along LP in 1983, so I found it familiar when it showed up in the SE. Agree the “trust me” line fits better, but not much.

Continuing with the battle of Endor, I’ve recently noticed that a lot of the mid-sized Rebel ships there are container transports, the same type that are seen escaping Hoth.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense to bring cargo ships to the front lines of a battle. Are there plans to replace those with more battle-ready craft, or should they stay as cannon fodder to show the Rebels’ desperate plight?

Just noticed an extremely bizarre editing mistake (at least I think its an mistake). When Palp gives the order to fire the DS laser, watch Luke. He is looking at the emperor and then to the window and then back, and repeats this exact action. I may be wrong but it looks like they looped it. Either way I don’t think I’m alone in thinking this is weird am I?
Look at 3:24 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPZigWFyK2o

It does look a little weird, but rather than an editing loop like the Tusken Raider in ANH holding his gaffi stick over his head, this looks more like an awkward repetition of movement from Mark. As if he was told to act shocked and look back and forth from the threat to the target.

If it is looped they somehow managed to apply it to only part of his body (see how his gloved right hand moves for instance).

On Hayden’s profile pic for the Soccer Aid it also has his weakness down as ‘tendency to choke😉

Fair play to him for doing it - not easy playing alongside some world-class talented legends of the game - and fellow celebrities, many who’ve also played to a decent level. He gave up a week to do it (training and bonding together etc) and did a good job for his team, and was decent himself.

I love how he’s so powerful now that he doesn’t even need a lightsaber hilt to produce a red blade.
