That was so good I wish I hadn’t seen it. The bit at the end will be a guaranteed laugh at every viewing I go to.

The only “problem” I have with the clip is that it seems Jyn is a pretty capable combatant which means the premature Mary Sue claims will pop up again.

I made the foolish decision to look at the Youtube comments.

They already have, criticizing the fact that her comrade’s (If there’s one thing I’m bad at, it’s names) just staring while she kicks butt and how that’s a sign that feminism’s gone too far or something.

I honestly expected more.
These things are almost like memes. Eventually people will get bored off it and go and complain about something else silly. And when dealing with a franchise as big as SW there’s always going to be some overly paranoid and/or nitpicky thing for people to nag about. (I’m already dreading the reactions to the Han Solo film.)

People in other more general movie forums are already saying the Solo film is going to suck. It hasn’t even been shot first! (Yes, I went there.)

$10 says Han’s only going to fire a shot at the very end of the film, and before then every other character on screen will get to fire their shot first.

Best (and worst) lightsaber design?

I was also annoyed with how they made the lightsaber blade look, as I was concerned that it’d be the default appearance. It wasn’t, and I was satisfied.

Best of all it fits Kylo perfectly. I’m glad we have things like that in Star Wars again.

It does, I agree. We need more weapons with personality in Star Wars (without being absurd like the Lightcopters), even if its as simple as more diversity in sabre blade colours.

For designs I grew to like, I must say the cross-guard sabre seemed dangerously impractical at first, but I grew to enjoy it more after they actually made use of the fact that it can hurt, and that people who actually study longsword pointed out that with proper technique, the odds of hitting yourself with the crossguard is practically nill.

And in no time the biggest threat to mankind disappeared and was never spoken of again. Seriously, do you guys remember how big of a deal some people made of this way back when?

Yes. I wasn’t on (EDIT: here) then, but I was part of the group that was making a big deal over it.

I was also annoyed with how they made the lightsaber blade look, as I was concerned that it’d be the default appearance. It wasn’t, and I was satisfied.

Well I didn’t judge the entire movie based off that screenshot, since I didn’t even know if it was Star Wars or not. But I disagree with your premise. If visuals give off different tones throughout the film, it stands to reason that either:

  1. the director has no clue what he’s doing (a la prequels Lucas)
    or
  2. 20 different people are writing the script and it’s just an amalgamation of a bunch of disparate ideas
  1. We don’t actually know how the whole thing pieces together, and those tonal differences may not be as extreme as a series of images suggests.

Arguably one of the worse designs might be the light-pike. The EU made the matter of reach between a lightsabre and an equivalent spear like weapon almost a non issue with the idea of lightsabre blade length adjustment, and it always tried to establish that lightsabre resistant materials were supposed to be rare, making the light-pike an extremely expensive and difficult to carry weapon compared to a regular lightsabre set to being long.

I know it’s blasphemy, but I always liked Dooku’s saber hilt.

I agree that the curved hilt is nice. It makes ergonomic sense, to me.

EDIT: However, if the Dooku lightsaber toy I got long ago is accurate to the actual size of the hilt, I do consider it a little on the large size. A curved, distinctly one handed lightsaber makes sense.

The Aurebesh letter for X does not resemble the english letter at all. Therefore, the retcon for Aurebesh’s existence in place of the English in ANH means that there should be no way anyone could’ve known to name a ship an X-Wing.

Except that they apparently have kept the English lettering (I don’t think that’s the correct term for it, though) in the canon as a sort of “fancy” script, i.e. the galactic equivalent to cursive handwriting.

I don’t think the retcon was necessary either but *shrug*. They did it anyway and we have to live with it now.

Didn’t see the name until the Kenner figure came along. I doubt Kenner would make one up, so it must come from Lucasfilm? Maybe someone was a Ramones fan. 😉

What connotation does the name Jar Jar have on it’s own?

Nit the name. The idea that something can bring offense without intending to. (I was bringing up more how Jar Jar has been compared to Minstrel performances, if that makes it clearer.)

I kind of doubt the name was inspired by Lobotomy. I never even made that connection before. And it wasn’t even said onscreen. John Hollis is only listed in the credits as “Lando’s Aide”

No, but it’s kind of like Jar Jar. Not supposed to be taken a certain way, but it ended up doing so anyway.

That said, I am a little thankful it wasn’t onscreen, though I have to wonder where it came from.

Best (and worst) lightsaber colour?

Oh yes, I finally figured out which lightsaber colour’s my least favourite: purple-white with shimmering rainbow colours ala Gantoris’ lightsaber from the Jedi Academy Trilogy. That thing’s too outrageous even for me.

Wait, what? There’s actually a rainbow lightsaber in Legends?

(EDIT: I googled it, but all I can find are pictures of a guy with a regular-looking purple lightsaber. I guess even the illustrators thought it was too crazy.)

There is no picture of it. To the best of my googling, it was only ever described like that in Dark Apprentice. Every other mention of it dropped the rainbow.

My main problem with the SW Ring theory is it doesn’t have enough Nibelungs.

My main problem is that it doesn’t really feel like a Ring, and is more saying “This is good because these are actually references to the OT.”

Now, if the Ring Theory actually did make Star Wars into a ring, then it could be more interesting.

I couldn’t find the radio play episode on Youtube, but here’s the summary of that scene from Wookieepedia;
Luke joins Biggs Darklighter, who tests his flying abilities using a flight simulator. It is revealed by Commander Willard that Luke was only “killed” twice, despite Biggs pitting him against the virtual equivalent of the entire Imperial Starfleet. (Whether Willard was actually exaggerating or not is left for the listener to determine, though regardless Luke does well enough that the Rebels are willing to put him into a starfighter for the assault.)

I also thinks that “experienced” is a vague term for the Rebel Alliance, especially at this point in time. Keep in mind that this is before the Rebels had a proper fleet.
And I seem to remember there being some excuse about a lot of the pilots not being overly experienced and/or a lot of them being on missions elsewhere, or something like that, but I can’t confirm that until I get to listen to the episode again.

That sounds about right; I have a digital copy of it (though it seems not to be the original thing, there’s apparently bits and pieces cropped here and there.) and that’s more or less why Biggs said. Only died twice against the entire Imperial Navy, and was apparently better skilled than some of the guys on the mission itself (though I seem to recall that they had a shortage of pilots in the radio play as well).

(Of course the more blatant excuse is that Luke’s the main character. This kind of logical nitpicking probably wasn’t that much of a concern for either filmmakers or viewers back in the 70’s.)

But of course. However, thought experiments like these can be fun.

Regarding Grievous: They did try to explain the cough in the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon, but I would argue that’s another failing of the prequels: They’re a little too reliant on outside material to explain everything (“Jedi are supposed to be rare, that’s why the OT’s perception of them makes sense!” And yet the films never actually supports that notion.) Meanwhile, the OT, while still having some elements of this (mainly in backstory), what little it does explain tends to be enough to hold it (mostly) together.

I’m Hoping the ST doesn’t fall into this trap.

The Battle of Yavin (according to SW Wikia) involved 30 Rebel starfighters. All but 3 were destroyed.

I counted roughly 25 pilots (plus Luke Skywalker)in the briefing room.

The medal ceremony featured at least 45 pilots celebrating.

Does that mean that the Rebellion had around 70 pilots for the Battle of Yavin but only used less than half?
Did they all not have ships?
If there were limited number of ships, why did they let a moisture farmer who no one had seen fly a ship up until that point take one of the precious few starships they had?
If they had plenty of ships, why did they send the guy who just walked in the door with no previous experience on the most important mission of their young rebellion’s existence?

Is there an official explanation as to why Red and Gold Squadron were essentially wiped out but there were probably one or two more squadrons at the Yavin ceremony that went unused?

To add on to this, what little we do hear about his piloting ability implies he should’ve been killed during the mission. He doesn’t seem to have an inkling of understand how to fly anything that wasn’t atmospheric (“I thought you said this thing was fast, why don’t you outrun 'em?”), let alone combat ready (“what’s that flashing?” when looking at the shield output. Even if his little T-16 had a similar layout to an X-Wing, I doubt that it had anywhere near same sort of sensory equipment)

All we have to go by with for his own flying ability up to that point is him boasting about his ability, and self boasting doesn’t mean much. It makes you wonder why Luke was brought along, if you’re not looking at it from a sense of narrative, in which case: Who else would you have as our PoV character in the climax?
