I assume the players can handle that, but most of the TVs in NTSC Country would not proper display PAL, which also should be gone since all the TVs are selled worldwide.

Who says I heard it from anyone? I have personal experience with it since my PS3 refuses to play certain content.

Where do you live, FreaQ? In NTSC-land it is well known that we have to avoid 1080i50 when looking for Region Free imports on UK sites.

But if you want a reference, Page "6-7" of Blu-ray Disc Demystified.

Euro BD players must support both PAL and NTSC and they can coexist on a disc.

North American BD players aren't required to, and most won't play the PAL content.

Another thing which needs to be captured is a PCM mono track from an LD of The Wizard of Oz (perhaps the "Ultimate Oz" box set?). All DVD/Blu-ray releases from 1999 onward have a weird error in the parlor scene in Kansas; before '99, Dorothy said "Oh, Toto, don't..." but in all the DVD/Blu-ray releases except for the original MGM one, it cuts off mid-sentence. Even the "restored" mono track on the more recent releases has this problem.

I visited a thrift store recently and bought an intriguing tape that was hand-labelled. It turned out to be someone's 4-minute student short film, with bars and tone at the head.

But it wasn't the master copy. The 1kHz tone sounded way lower, colors are faded, contrast is poor, and blacker-than-black in the bars is already clipped no matter how high brightness was raised in the Proc Amp.

I tried to use the bar's values anyway but they were WAY off and produced both crush and bloom in the content itself.

Shea's tape sounds unique among the bootlegs, in that it seems to be an internal leak of a legit telecine rather than a pirate telecine. Or maybe I'm reading too much into how many connections her husband had.

The HD DVD track is bit-identical to the Blu-ray track.

I have these:

• Russian non-OAR open-matte 16:9 OCT* 1080i MPEG-2
• FLAC (via TrueHD) from worldwide Blu-ray
• Dolby Digital 5.1 from OCT 1999 R1 DVD

I can mux them all together into something, but what I need first is a synchronization point.

Where does the first cut of the movie occur in the Blu-ray? For this Russian broadcast it is 00:01:35;28. It's an angle change from the police officer's front-left side to his back.

Can someone providing a very brief rundown on what is required to preserve one?

1. Player with SPDIF out.
2. Computer with bit-perfect SPDIF in.

There's a PAL VHS that I would like to have as a digital file (MPEG-2 or lossless) but I have no PAL VCR.

On the other hand, I have a nice S-VHS NTSC machine, as well as an NTSC LaserDisc player.

Anyone willing to trade their time for mine?

The tape I have in mind is cheap and readily available, so I would just buy it and have it shipped right to your address. What you do with it after transferring is up to you. Maybe you could earn a couple bucks.

I have never seen that on my captures, but I don't use that device. I have seen similar green or magenta bars appear when I had my card seated in a PCIe slot that it didn't like.

Just out of curiosity, what is the channel that aired the censored German HDTV version? Since Movie-Censorship shows an uncensored German SD airing.

I'm trying to figure out whether it's better to capture somewhere close to where I think the levels should be by eye, and risk crushing or blooming detail, or constrain the range so that it definitely fits within the ends of the histogram, for later expansion with the Excel function.

Bars here from Visions of Light. Both captures are using the ATI 600 USB. The first is with high brightness and low contrast (dull image) and the second is with lower brightness and higher contrast. My attempt at approximating the appropriate values didn't go over too well due to the laptop monitor that I was using. For some reason it causes things to look way off.

The dark blue bar and dark purple patch seem to show the biggest differences. Beyond that I'm only seeing noise shifts. I don't know which is better, but at least I'm satisfied that there isn't a huge difference either way.

Looks like my approximation didn't leave enough play at the low end to avoid clipping below-black.

Rather than trying to do any repainting, they simply did a video edit cutting that frame and replacing it with a single-field pause of the previous frame. The pulldown pattern breaks, but resumes at the next shot.

No wonder I couldn't find that frame when I was looking for the timecode earlier.

1080p compression is more efficient than 1080i compression. The downside is higher decoder requirements.

I downloaded several other rips to my seedbox to test quickly... and then it stopped responding to RDP requests. So that isn't happening too soon.

One is a WEB-DL.

No ProRes. Uncompressed.

Anyway, I discovered today that they removed the movies from On Demand. Don't know why.

It is airing on a channel called Encore Avenue in March.
