Here's the opening of Jedi that I'd love to see. It's quite close to what Possesed is working on for his edit, but still different. I'm no good at posting pics to show exactly what I'm talking about, but I hope you can follow.

Opening text would have to be altered to mention that Luke has returned to Dagobah to continue his training.

After opening text, we pan down to Darth Vaders Super Stardestroyer near the uncompleted Death Star

Cut to Darth Vader in his mediation chamber talking to Luke telepathically through the force urging him to join him on the darkside.

cut to the deleted scene of Luke in the cave working on his new light saber. Edit the exterior of the cave to resemble Dagobah. Luke shakes the voice in his head and continues working and then igniting his saber.

Cut back to the Super Stardestroyer and we see Vader's shuttle leave for the Death Star (why was he leaving from a standard Stardestroyer originally?) continue to the original opening scene with Vader and Jerrod.

After that, cut to Yoda's hut on Dagobah for Yoda's death scene. After Luke says "So I am a Jedi." Cut Yoda's line about having to face Vader again and just cut to him saying "When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be." This way we get the idea that Luke has continued and now finished his training with Yoda. Yoda dies, the conversation with Obi-Wan is had and then cut to the Emperors arrival on the Death Star. That scene plays out like normal and then cut to the droids on Tattooine and continue from there.

This would give the beginning of the film a more menacing tone with Vader still haunting Luke and more of a build up to the action at Jabba's palace. Agree? Disagree?

This sounds brilliant would love to see this!!

ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!

I don't mind the ewoks, never have.  People seems to see them as cute and totally ridiculous that they defeat the empire.

Well first they are introduced trying to cook and eat our heroes alive.  Not that cute.

And secondly they don't defeat the empire, the film shows them getting massacred.  But they do distract the empire long enough to aloow chewie to get hold of an atst etc.

The Fall of the Jedi Trilogy (Released)
Time

I swear down Lucas must have made a list of all the mentions of the time before the OT and specificaly set out to contradict each and every one in the PT...

"I haven't gone by the name of Obi-Wan since, oooh.... before you were born"

= Since you were born! and not a moment before!

"I don't ever remember owning a droid"

= What about R4 you heartless b*stard! Sure you forgot him pretty quick when the buzz droids decapitated him and replaced him with that bronze astrodroid!

"She died when I was very young... she was very beautiful, kind but sad"

= She died about 36 seconds after you were born! In that short time you were able to judge her emotional state and relative beauty based on your 9 months experience of staring at the inside of her womb!

"For a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians..."

= It was 1000 years you old fool! A thousand generations is like 20,000 years!

"You served my father in the clone wars"

= No he didn't! This never happened! Why would a Jedi "Serve" a senator! The Jedi were an entirely seperate and autonomous part of the galactic government! and on another thing why are you a princess! Did your father the senator take control of the planet in the last 20 years in a bloody coup ending democracy on Alderaan!

...there are others lol.

ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!
Time

I've been reading alot of the fanedit forum's chat about proposed changes to ROTJ, dissatisfaction with the film and about the prequels being better. Here is the critical reaction pasted from Wikipedia...

Film Rotten Tomatoes Metacritic
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope 94% (67 reviews)[85] 91 (13 reviews)[86]
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back 97% (71 reviews)[87] 78 (15 reviews)[88]
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi 79% (66 reviews)[89] 52 (14 reviews)[90]
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 57% (186 reviews)[91] 51 (36 reviews)[92]
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones 67% (218 reviews)[93] 53 (39 reviews)[94]
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 80% (253 reviews)[95] 68 (40 reviews)[96]
Star Wars: The Clone Wars 19% (153 reviews)[97] 35 (30 reviews)[98

I guess I'm in the minority but by the slimest of margins I rate ROTJ as superior to ESB and the notion that ROTJ is inferior to the visual abortions that are the theatrical cuts of the PT seems like mass insanity.

I can't think of any moments in ESB or ANH that have me grinning like a kid again as some of the sequences in ROTJ.  I know on paper ESB is technicaly a better film but the tingles down my spine, wide eyed joy and warm fuzzy feeling elicited by ROTJ tell me different.

So I wanna hear from you ROTJ haters as to why you do hate it and I also wanna hear from those like me who love it.  Importantly I wanna hear why you love it because honestly I'm not 100% sure why I love it so much! I also wanna hear from other fan editors planning revisions to ROTJ why they feel so strongly that it needs changing.

Let the debate begin!

X-Wing Mechanic,

Yes it's one of the deleted extras on the Blu-Ray.  Would've loved if Lucas had put all the deleted material on the Blu-Ray.  I would estimate there is another 30 mins + deleted dialogue sequences from each PT film that he hasn't released.  Alot of the worst creeky dialogue in the original cuts of the films was shot in isolation during Lucas' infamous post production pickup periods.  These pickups where not additional shots they were filmed to replace sequences shot during principle photography.  The actors were flown back in for one day and realed through line after line of new dialogue on a sterile green screen stage with no sets or other actors to help bring the perforamnce to life. Whether we'll ever see the original on set dialogue sequences, who knows.

Often if an actor is delivering an awful reading of a terrible line in the PT you'll notice they're wearing a wig/false-beard or they've dramaticaly lost/put-on weight = pickup!

If you get your cut uploaded let me know.  Would like to see it.

Hi X-Wing Mechanic,

You're the first person to let me know that you've watched it (No prizes I'm afraid).

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I momentarely paused preparing distribution on Episode I: Reborn to type this.

I take it you mean the "Red" scene in Palp's office? That scene is actually longer and was reconstructed from the 2nd half that was already in ROTS and a 95% finished animatic of the first half released on the Blu-Rays.  You'll see that the first half is lower resolution and they've only done a partialy successful matte around Anakin and Palpatine as they stand against the window.  I added some evil music to the first half that I was very pleased with.  I removed a few lines in the middle of the scene that Lucas re-recorded later on in pickups and used in the 'Anakin realises Palp is a sith" scene.

I thought the first half of this scene has loads of good dialogue where Palpatine is winding Anakin up so when he looses his temper in the next Jedi council scene it seems more natural.

Check out: http://vimeo.com/user6280236/videos

I've uploaded an early cut of the ROTS finale where Vader is revealed (But he doesn't stop around like Boris Karloff and shout NOOOOOOO!!, you'll find interesting.

Sorry but...

"Took out Lando 'Yeehaaa' or whatever cheesy line it is, when they escape the Death Star"

That scene is one of the greatest achievements in human history! Including landing on the moon!

If I could wave a magic wand and do one thing from Star Wars it would probably be, blasting out of an exploding death star in the Falcon reathed in fire shouting Yeehaaa in Billy Dee's voice (Whilst wearing a flowing grey cape and suave moustache preferably)

I've watched that hundreds of times and I swear down I almost reckon hes not gonna make it everytime.  Goosebumps, chills down the spine and huge open mouthed smiling ensues every time.

But that just my personnal preference lol

Re Erikstormtrooper,

Thx for the interesting comments mate.  In answer to your points:

I did a test where I tried dubbing Jar-Jar and I didn't like it. Takes a better voice actor than me I guess.

Yes it does make for quite a few subtitles but it did give me the freedom to control the motivation and character of the Gungans.  If you hate subtitles (Or if you speak the language that I've dubbed the Gungans in) you won't fully enjoy my edit.  But it's a damn sight less annoying than Ahmed best's bizarre Minstrel performance.

And on a side note the Gungans are not essential to the film in any way.  I have an early draft edit where I cut them out completley.  It streamlines things but for me 1.5hrs does not a worthy SW film make.

My opening is actually 30 seconds shorter by the time they land.  I felt all the unfunny R2 stuff really dragged so I swapped it for Anakin and Obi banter which did really amuse me.

Maybe it's my tastes but the beeps clip had me laughing out loud when I first saw it on the Blu-Ray (Then shouting at the screen "Why was this cut out"). Ewan's moustache twirling is comedy gold also.  I think all those moments are essential to showing the love and comradery between our two heros.

Obviously if I'd written the story for the PT myself I wouldn't have wasted the first 4 hrs keeping Anakin and Obi-Wan on seperate sides of the Planet/Entire galaxy.  But since that is the case, the opening act of ROTS is the only place that I can build that relationship... before it implodes in the final act.

The thing I regret most that I could never fix in my cuts was Ewan's near-total absence from episode I.  If there had been deleted scenes of him reading the paper or doing the accounts I would have put it back in lol! As brilliant as Liam Neeson is, his character should have been Obi-Wan and we'd all be alot happier.

ahh no confusion.  I do mean ROTJ. I'm doing a quick cut of that to suite my tastes. And was wondering if I should go with the original unchanged Ewok party ending or the fall of the empire SE ending.

I actually prefer the SE music and ending but I didn't want to depart too heavily from the theatrical cuts that I taped off the TV on to VHS when I was a kid.

Like I said may for a blend of the two.

Re: Bester,

Q: Can you tell us about your approach to bridging the PT with the OT?  In particular, do you show the birth of the twins and the death of Padme?  Also, how do you retain the surprises of ESB?

A: I thought about this one til my head hurt. I tried to imagine if I had my mind wiped and was handed my version of the PT trilogy and the OT trilogy and told to watch them in chronological order. What would a first time viewer think and believe?

As a general principle I don't mind smart viewers working out a few surprises on their own.  It's part of the fun of watching a movie. But you won't be spoonfed the answers...

In ROTS:Reborn Vader is never mentioned.  I've recut the final moments of Anakin v Obi so it looks like he has died from being burned.  Then later we see Palpatine arriving.  Palpatine no longer says "He's still alive", he only calls for a medicalcapsule and then sits mournfully by Anakin's body.  Then the last we see of them is Anakin on the floating stretcher/coffin unit thing. It's a mystery.

Padme no longer really recovers from Anakin crushing her spine, only mumbling an incoherent "I know there's still..." as she dies. The twins are shown as boy and girl (But not named) and are shown to be sent to live on tatooine and with senator Organa.

Now the new viewer sits down to watch the OT. It opens with a character called Princess Leia fleeing aboard the TantiveIV.  At this point a really smart viewer might connect the set of the ship with the baby but possibly not.

Then this evil dude called Vader storms the ship, we think he's just another evil minion like Maul/Dooku/Grievous. Infact we don't even discover that he is even on familiar speaking terms with the emperor until half way through ESB.

Then we meet Luke who we instantly realise is the kid from ROTS.  He then meets Obi-Wan who tells him a bogus story about his father being killed by this Vader guy.  We know he's lying to Luke to spare his feelings about the betrayal of his father, but we don't know how big the lie actually is.  We'll find that out at the end of ESB at the same time Luke does.

Now on the Leia question.  In ESB Yoda says there is another hope so the slow/normal viewers think ahh that other baby must be the new hope.  The smart viewers have already worked it out.  Keep in mind that Senator Organa is only fleetingly mentioned as being from Alderaan in TPM by CPT Panaka is a seemingly irrelivant piece of info.

When we see Organa in AOTC/ROTS his Alderaan origins are never mentioned.  Plus Princess Leia is never named as being Leia 'Organa' anywhere in the OT (That's just extra backstory that has grown up round the saga). So as I said smart viewers will put the ship and Leia together but I bet most won't and there aren't alot of other clues.

The Leia reveal in ROTJ will be a surprise to about 90% of viewers and the 10% that got it, can pat themselves on the back.  The Vader reveal will be a mystery to 99% of viewers and the the 1% who worked that one out in ANH will have a smug sense of superiority to compensate for having been proved right. And they will have to wait to the end of ESB to be PROVED right about there theory.  So even they have a bit of suspence.

Hope that all makes sense.  Now if I can just find the Fresh Prince to give me a mind wipe and put my theory into practice.

Re timdiggerm.

Q: How does the Queen come with QGJ on Tattooine?

A: I just show her walking off to Mos Espa with Gui-Gon chatting about the planet. She would naturally remove her makeup and dress to not draw attention just as Gui-Gon goes all Eastwood to hide the fact that he's a Jedi.

Plus I removed any lines like "The queen wouldn't approve".

Q: Why does the Queen stop dressing as the Queen for awhile?

A: The only big error I couldn't get around was that Padme is in the orange handmaiden outfit when Anakin gives her the necklace. I couldn't change the outfit and I couldn't remove the scene.  I can live with that. Maybe she just digs orange velvet.

Also Portman is in the back of a few shots when the Queen is talking.

It's all pretty smooth overall. Acts as follows:

Act1: Naboo official business = official dress

Act2: Hiding from the federation = dress down incognito

Act3: Coruscant negotiations = offcial dress again

Act4: Taking back Naboo = It's war so her wardrobe is functional

Q: What about when they go to visit Boss Nass at the big stone head?

A: I cut the Knightley double out of this scene.  Tarpals introduces the Queen, Boss Nass talks and it cuts straight to Portman begging for his help. Through clever new subtitles I make Nass be won over by the sight of the Queen of the high n mighty Naboo kneeling before the Gungans.

Q: And what happens at the start of AOTC?

A: I've cut it in such a way that you now truly believe that the person coming down the ramp is Amidala so it is more shocking when the bomb goes off. This is actually enhanced for the first time viewer by having never seen her use a double before.

Then Captain whatsisname says "Come on senator it's not safe" etc

Plus the next scene in my cut is Padme in the senate p*ssed off that her body guard has been killed to prevent her oposing the military creation act.

When I get TPM:Reborn up it will all be clear!

Re timdiggerm.

Yes that edit is a little harsher than I would've liked.  But I've also cut every reference to the foolish Amidala/Padme double subplot from the whole film. So seeing the Keira Knightley double in full Queen makeup would be confusing at that stage.

This means the Queen seems less aloof and Padme seems stronger because you no longer see them as two seperate characters. Plus cutting the reveal makes Obi-Wan, Gui-Gon, Anakin and well just about everybody seem less like idiots.

Any other questions I'd be glad to answer.
