New Snoke audio. “Prepare the weapon” should be better balanced against the music now. And I raised the echo effect on the voice a little bit.

That hoodless Kylo is great. Amazing work krlozdak!

Indeed. Now, can we make him shirtless as well?

Here are some slowed down shots for the Falcon escape scene. Are they the last ones needed?

https://mega.nz/#!aBtjFbzC!dSLA3a7qREsfBUxuMrhwGW8nlt8uTwFQVcUyiLh0U7E

They’re not quite perfect since the visuals are so complicated. The frame blending doesn’t work great on fast motion and multiple layers of motion, but at least it doesn’t stutter anymore.

Of course there is still the simpler solution of simply cutting out a bit of the music, like I originally did, and you won’t have to use slowed shots and new sound effects. But the slowed shots should work pretty well now.

Also, we have no plans to do FX work on Kylo Ren’s hood in the second Snoke scene; it seems like something out of our reach.

I think it’s actually very much doable (for someone who unlike me has any skills in that area) as the only shots that need editing are those where we see Kylo (and Hux) from behind, looking up at Snoke. And there is a shot with the same camera angle that shows Kylo with his hood. So it should be possible to take Kylo from that shot and put him on top of the unmasked shots.

I guess I can have a look when the other things are done.

Is there a repeated Poe shot? The one that he looks over to the hole in the oscillator. Is that the same one used for when he’s looking at the Starkiller’s laser?

I think so.

Originally I had used the shot of the female pilot reacting to an explosion (which I think fits better), but I suppose it was too obvious a repeat if the original scene was going to be played verbatim. I think some editing could be done to put her reaction back in the Starkiller firing and simply remove that reaction from the original scene.

I think if you add some Starkiller laser glow it shouldn’t be a problem.

I did that when I worked on the slow motion effect for that part, so the shot isn’t identical in color, at least.

Would flipping the shots be a possibility ? (I noticed the re-use of those shots as well)

Flipping wouldn’t work well, but maybe cropping and/or reversing the shot could work.

With TLJ on every screen now, it seems that a few elements of TFA might be slighly inconsistent with its sequel

TINY SPOILERS INCOMING

I disagree.

  1. There’s someone who still could (come back, but not specifically to Jakku)
  2. I’d say technically Kylo was in training, but he just got there and there wasn’t a good moment for training during the timespan of the story. Although some moments of training might have have happened that we weren’t shown.
  3. Kylo’s scar is inconsistent though, I plan on fixing that in my TFA edit.

TLJ contains no contradictions to your edit whatsoever, but I am eagerly looking forward to TLJ: A GIANT Restructure

I will definitely do something like that, perhaps not giant, but something. I was fanediting it in my head as I watched, haha.

I believe there is a shot in TLJ that looks a lot like one of the TFA:R shots ^_^ and I didn’t see anything contradicting it either.

If you’re talking about what I think you’re talking about, that shot provides a nice sound effect that can be used in the similar TFA:R shot, too!

If he’s talking about what I think you think he’s talking about I noticed that too and I’m planning on adding a sound like that.

One more thing I noticed - there’s a low rumble when Finn sees the Finalizer, but I don’t think it’s loud enough for Finn to notice, at least with the music. Perhaps it would help to mix in a more conventional ship sound, something like when the Falcon enters Yavin IV’s atmosphere.

I think he originally reacts to the crowd reaction. But you may be right. If you could link to the ship sound you’re referring to it would help.

Ridley, the 3PO shot looks great, as does the fixed slow shots from Kylo to the technicians. I wonder, though, if you could send me the 3PO leg shot without artificial black widescreen bars applied? It appears to be zoomed slightly, and to have had these bars put on. The problem is that they are slightly farther into the frame than the rest of my timeline. If you can send me the shot, zoomed though it may be, I can apply the widescreen matte on my own and have it match perfectly.

Gotcha! 😃

And I’ve identified the shots needing new slow motion from the crying Rey/Falcon escape.

So, while you’re looking at retiming, there’s a certain shot that is in the theatrical release that is clearly in slow motion and it bugs me every time I see it.

rey

It’s at 1:57:20 in Restructured V2. The shot of Rey standing over Kylo when she beats him. Look at the falling snow and it’s clearly in slow mo. There isn’t a way to retime that, is there? It stands out to me every time and bugs the crap out of me.

I mean, it could be sped up, but I think it needs to be slow to sort of focus in on Rey there for a bit.

And I’ve identified the shots needing new slow motion from the crying Rey/Falcon escape. It starts with the shot when the Falcon headlights appear and ends before the shot of the Falcon flying off in a cloud of snow. But strangely this sequence is exactly the same length as in the original movie, but they’re slightly out of sync and shots start at slightly different times so I’m not sure what has been done to that part and why.

I’ve noticed what you’re talking about, but I felt like I’ve noticed this in multiple versions of the movie. Have you checked other sources to see if it has that weird lag/effect as well? Maybe I’m wrong.

I overlayed a part of my rip of the original movie (which doesn’t have the lag, that comes from slowing down shots resulting in some frames being shown twice which causes the stutter) on Restructured V2, and the sequence I mentioned above start and end on the exact same frame but within the sequence some shots seem just slightly slower in V2 and cuts happen at different times. I believe Neverar did this sequence, so maybe he can explain what’s been done. It might have something to do with taking out the shot of Rey picking up the lightsaber and slowing down shots to make this work but then putting the shot back in, I think there was a discussion about that.

Leg

Here are some more slowed shots too, specifically the closeup of Kylo and then the First Order control room again because it seems like that one was a couple of frames too short.

Here’s that shot in context, zoomed and shifted left just enough to remove Threepio’s leg. Also boosted up the foley for him walking off.

It’s not great. Ridley, if you would like to do something about the leg, please feel free, but I don’t wish to burden you with what seems like such a tiny thing.

It should be quick and painless, I’ll give it a go. The foley is better now, but I think it could begin slightly earlier (over the “removed leg” shot) and might need a bit more clanky footsteps over the servo sounds.

Almost impossible to hear any 3PO walking here, it needs to be… more intense! And I would suggest slightly zooming in on sad BB-8 at the 8 second mark to hide 3PO’s leg which should be walking away at that point. Alternatively the leg could be hidden by placing a new R2 image over it, I could try something like that. Even though removing a golden leg would be the opposite of alchemy, really.

I think for the Maz scene it would have let the original music be audible. (I got the audio fully baked from Ridley, but I assumed that was the reason so I did not ask.)
I also got the Snoke audio from Ridley fully prepared, but I believe it would be too jarring to fade the audio in after that point rather than when it begins.

I’ll have a look at the sound mix in these spots and see what can be done.

I’ll have a look at these things:
• Kylo Ren’s helmet on/off
• 3PO walking sound
• Recolored Leia deleted scene (I am of course partial to my own coloring found here
https://mega.nz/#!nFEw2BxA!ZzTOO__xA5gkVVNoRR70WrNGGbHOMhOhr64j4uZ1h7Q but I’ll send an uncorrected version to Neverar so he can have another go at it)
• Fix shots “after Han is shanked to Leia’s Force reaction”
• Updated Starkiller shot as X-wings arrive (I think I have a version of this)
• Dub tech guy to tell Hux “weapon fully recharged” (maybe)

If someone makes a v2.1 checklist I’ll get working on what’s needed. 😉

Here’s a start:
• New deleted scene grade
• New “no smoke” shot
• More updated slomo shots
• Kylo helmet fix
• 3PO foley

This was probably not meant to be removed in this edit but after Finn’s “they’ve found us”, Han and Finn are with Maz in the basement and she goes “those beasts, they’re here” as in they didn’t inform her? Just “those beasts…” would’ve been enough. Super nitpicky, I know. I can live with it though. The Rathtars are still my biggest gripe. Other than that… this movie feels like a masterpiece now.

I interpret it as “they’re here (on the ground)” as opposed to just floating in the sky as they saw earlier. Maybe?

Looks pretty good! One little thing - There’s a duplicate credit for me in the list of contributors, and one missing for the Jakku hyperspace change.

You’re missing from the Star Destroyer addition as well.
