THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

Not to derail things too much, but as we were also talking about American Graffiti when this thread started...

Looks scratchy as heck, but the colors don't seem to have turned. Pity it costs a bundle. This appears to be an "adapted scope" print, which is essentially letterbox format on film.

Info: James Bond - Laserdisc Preservations: 1962-1971

One thing that puzzles me about the documentaries, how can there be SE DVD's on the bookshelves behind Michael Wilson, when the documentaries first came out on the SE's? If they aren't the DVD's, what are they?

And watching the Ian Fleming doc on The Living Daylights jogged my memory about 1990 tv movie "Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming". Is it worth tracking down?

Star Wars - Episode VII - FACTS IN TOP POST
Time

I don't mind younger characters so long as there's a logical reason for them to be in the plot. Star Trek II brought in Spock's protege and Kirk's son. It sure seemed like they would the "next generation" before anyone saw ST III.

Even if they ignore the EU, it stands to reason Leia and Han would have had some kids after ROTJ. Even Lando might have settled down and raised a family.

If there's still a Rebel alliance, you need some young blood in the ranks. I do hope we see Wedge again. Maybe they'll get Denis Lawson back with the promise of going out in a blaze of glory? ;)

Last movie seen

A favorite scary movie of mine. (And finally back in print on DVD.) Easy to forget it was a tv movie, that was pushing the boundary of what you could get away with back then. It was also one of Stan Winston's earliest makeup gigs.

First time I saw Disney's Gargoyles tv show, I thought it had to have been influenced by this film.

Howard The Duck - special edition (Released)
Time

Yeah, they are releasing a lot of 1980's Universal horror flicks that haven't seen the light of day since VHS. Howard would be a no brainer for them. Shout might even be able to license the music video as an extra.

Been keeping my fingers crossed they could somehow pull off a special edition of the MST3K movie, with all the deleted scenes. ;)

His argument is flawed regarding the 1988 Congressional statements.

I omitted parts that were irrelevant, but the part he is quoting that I left out is not a GOTCHA moment. It actually re-inforces what I was arguing. Lucas says "who better than the artist to protect the work" because he felt that the artist wouldn't alter it. Lucas was afraid that corporations owning art would lead to it be altered--which was exactlly what was happening with Turner. So, as an alternative, he proposed artists owning the rights, because they were assumed to be protective of their art more than a corporation. He was never, ever, at any time, advocating an artists right to alter and suppress films. He was simply arguing that artists would be more responsible with film history than businessmen. He's mostly correct with the one exception--himself.

So, this guy is an idiot on multiple levels. He sees what he wants. Although I am flattered that he stalked me so thoroughly. I give him points for effort, but a failing grade for not having logic.

Much to my surprise, my comment was approved.

I think it would be interesting to address the other filmmaker's who constantly tinkered with their work. A thread at the HTF reminded me of Chaplin's recutting of some of his films well in the sound era, and Abel Gance was still fiddling with his silent epic Napoleon in 1970! Those might have been influences on the SE's.

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years
Time

Hard to choose between the lesser of two evil empires sometimes? ;)

Unless George had a "no sequels" clause written out somewhere, somebody was bound to float sequels sooner or later.  Some fantasy universes are just too tempting not to revisit. (Disney has a Wizard of Oz prequel in the pipeline, and there have been many books not penned by L. Frank Baum.)

George's kids might have wanted to make new films someday, but we'll probably never know now.

Most of 4 Billion going to charity

George Lucas Is Ready to Roll the Credits
“I’m a ’60s, West Coast, liberal, radical, artsy, dyed-in-the-wool 99 percenter before there was such a thing.”

George Lucas Confirms It: The Star Wars We Loved Never Existed
“Now everything is starting to come into clarity. Today is a bit like the day we learn that Santa Claus is your parents, socialism stops working when rich people’s money runs out, and a BA qualifies you for a $10 entry-level job that you could’ve gotten just out of high school.”

The Politics of Star Wars
“It was the idea that we had a President who genuinely saw himself as not subject to the rule of law. “Imperialist Presidency” gets bandied around a lot by both sides of the political spectrum, but everyone was worried that Nixon was setting one up. And what did Lucas write against this backdrop? He wrote a story about a democracy that had become an Empire, with a ruler who (all together now) “dissolved the council permanently”.”

(need it be noted that Lucas is a Barack "I can by-pass Congress" Obama supporter?)

[cue "Evil Emperor theme"]

You're seriously drawing comparisons between George and a member of the Nazi party? No. Just no. If this is going to turn into a silly political discussion, I'm booting this thread into off topic.
